The entire cast of the original series were to reprise their roles except for Sarah Michelle Gellar. She refused to participate because she felt the original series ended the story effectively. Buffy is portrayed by Giselle Loren in this series, who also voiced her on the videos games based on the franchise.
While the show never aired, the story was made into a comic as part of the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight" series, at the end of Volume 4, as a dream sequence.
The series was originally scheduled to premiere in 2002 on Fox Kids. But Fox sold their children's programming division during pre-production. Fox tried to sell the series to many networks but none of them would pick it up. In 2004, a four-minute pilot was made but still no network would buy it.
Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb wrote the pilot. Additional scripts were written by Jane Espenson, Steven S. DeKnight, Drew Z. Greenberg, Douglas Petrie, and Rebecca Kirshner - all returning from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997).
