Unlike the cartoon series, in the comics Sassette has freckles on her cheeks. Like the other Smurflings, she is one of the major Smurfs created by Studio Peyo for the cartoon series and will make her comic debut in the 1988 story, "Les P'tits Schtroumpfs" ("The Little Smurfs" in English).
Sassette's name is the portmanteau of the words "sassy" (which can mean "impudent" to her original self, but can also mean "lively" to refer to her transformed self) and "Smurfette." Unlike the other Smurfs, she is the only one whose name does not begin with an article ("la") in the French comics.
In the comic adaptation (which was published in 1988), Sassette was given her name by one of the Smurflings, not by Painter in the cartoon series. She was not created as a troublemaker who was changed "good" by Papa Smurf's magic as depicted in the cartoon version, but one with a curious mind.
"The Masked Pie Smurfer" was latter adapted as a comic story in 1990 under the title, "Le Schtroumpfeur Masque" ("The Masked Smurfer" in English).
