Too much material for too little film
planktonrules19 April 2009
This is a DVD extra included with CASTLE IN THE DESERT--the last Charlie Chan film made by Fox Studios. Its goal, it seems, is to talk about ALL of the Twentieth-Century Fox Chan films--something that is really impossible to do with a film only 34 minutes long! There is no real mention of Earl Derr Biggers (creator of the character), the transition from Warner Oland to Sidney Toler and the earlier Chan films are barely mentioned at all. Instead, the focus seems to be mostly on the middle and later films in the series. Because of this, the short, while interesting, is just too short and sketchy for fans of the series and isn't really a sufficient overview of the series. Still, if you have the DVD it's worth seeing--but it's just one of the better extras included with the recent releases of the Twentieth-Century Fox Chan films on DVD.
