The war is over and so it looks like Oppenheimer's career might be coming to an end.

Oppenheimer chairs the influential General Advisory Committee of the newly created US Atomic Energy Commission. He and his colleagues want to avert nuclear proliferation and a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.

Thus puts him at odds with members of the US government and military now that the Soviet Union have their own weapons program. Oppenheimer opposes the development of the hydrogen bomb. Edward Teller takes over that project.

In an atmosphere of paranoia and the red scare. Oppenheimer is suspected of being a communist, even being a Soviet agent. His bother admits to once being a member of the Communist Party at a congressional hearing and loses his job.

With his security clearance getting restricted, he flees to Europe.

After another closed congressional hearing, Oppenheimer wistfully mentions that in Britain he would be getting a knighthood.

The penultimate episode is about a man haunted with the death and destruction those atomic bombs caused in Japan. Instead of being feted, Oppenheimer invites disdain from the American government. They want an arms race.
