'What do I tell my friends?' 'I'm scared to go back to school' These questions haunt child burn survivors as they face the prospect of returning to their daily lives. In the film 'Just Like You', three children share their burn stories in a way that helps the audience understand their challenges and accept their differences. This film was created to provide burned children with a tool to educate their peer groups, familiarizing them with what they've been through, their changed appearance and how their scars effect their everyday lives. This film's uniquely artistic approach and playfully reverent music performed by Grammy nominated band, The Shins, is a groundbreaking educational tool. Kids see through the eyes of three burned children in their everyday lives and hear their matter-of-fact renditions of harrowing burn stories. Relating to these burn survivors allows kids to shift their paradigm and replaces what otherwise might be a repulsed or at least confused reaction with a more positive one. It is designed to prevent ostracism and promote acceptance of child burn survivors...reducing the emotional pain of kids who have already suffered so much. Caroline, a 10-year-old burn survivor and co-producer of the film says, 'I will never hide my scars because they are a part of me.' After viewing this film, kids and adults alike will understand Caroline and know that despite her burn injury she is still a kid who likes to swim and hang out with her friends - just like you.
