Foo Fighters kicked off their 2024 tour (get tickets here) on Wednesday, May 1st at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas, and paid tribute to hometown hero Dimebag Darrell during the show. Fittingly, Dave Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to the late Pantera guitarist.
In fan-filmed video (watch below), Grohl starts playing “My Hero” on guitar and addresses the crowd: “This one’s for everybody. Actually, you know what, since we’re here in Dallas, I’m gonna dedicate this one to an old friend. He lived around here. His name is Dimebag Darrell. How ’bout that? We’ll sing it for Darrell.”

In the mid-1980s, Jon Bon Jovi was preparing for his make-or-break third album with his namesake band Bon Jovi. The album that would eventually be known as Slippery When Wet was still in the planning stages when Jon and Richie Sambora were introduced to songwriter Desmond Child. During their first meeting, Child handed Jon a song title that would launch the band into the stratosphere, “You Give Love a Bad Name.” Jon’s jaw-dropping reaction predetermined the tune’s mega-success.

Foo Fighters played their first full-band concert of 2023 at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion at Meadowbrook in Gilford, Nh on Wednesday. The show served as a sort-of warm-up ahead of the band’s run of summer festival appearances. It also marked Foo Fighters’ first public gig with new live drummer Josh Freese, who has stepped in for the late Taylor Hawkins.
The setlist spanned a total of 21 songs, kicking off with “Rescued,” the lead single from their new album, But Here We Are. They further previewed the album with performances of “Under You,” “Nothing At All,” and the album’s title track.
During the show, Dave Grohl also paid tribute to Hawkins with an emotional solo rendition of “Cold Day in the Sun,” which marked the first live performance of the song in five years. “This is something I never thought I’d have to do,” Grohl said prior to the performance.

There are tons of great indie covers of classic rock songs. Today’s indie bands have many great classic rock bands to inspire them. Here is a list of the 10 best instances.
Best Coast | Clasos/Getty Images 10. ‘Rhiannon’ – Best Coast
Indie band Best Coast’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” is interesting. It appeared on the various artists’ album, A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac. They definitely made it their own. The piano as the backbeat isn’t the best, but guitarist and vocalist Bethany Cosentino’s singing is excellent on the classic rock tune.
9. ‘Gold Only Knows’ – Jr Jr
Jr Jr’s cover of The Beach Boys’ classic “Gold Only Knows” is a perfect example of an indie cover of a classic rock song. It blends the two genres, which are separated by multiple decades. The lyrics are classic rock, but the vibe, mood, and sound are all indie rock.

When Katharine Hepburn made her final big-screen appearance in Warren Beatty's 1994 romantic drama, "Love Affair," it marked the first time in her 62-year film career that she played a supporting role (aside from a cameo in 1943's "Stage Door Canteen") -- and this is all the more amazing when you consider how much she struggled at various junctures to maintain her leading lady status.
Hepburn's options were plentiful at birth. The Connecticut-born daughter of a wealthy urologist and a suffragette campaigner, Hepburn was raised in a permissive environment where societal limitations existed to be disregarded. She cut her hair short, excelled at sports like tennis and golf, wore pants, and smoked cigarettes. She pursued social justice causes at an early age, and received a liberal arts education at Bryn Mawr College (graduating with decidedly unladylike degrees in history and philosophy).
There was nothing performative about Hepburn's interests. She was appreciative of her good fortune,...

Few California singer-songwriters are as adored as Jackson Browne. Despite being born in Germany to an American serviceman, Browne has been synonymous with the golden state since the Sixties. Raised in the now overwhelmingly hip Los Angeles neighbourhood of Highland Park, he began his career as a teenager in the city’s famous folk clubs, before a short stint in New York with his lover and collaborator, Nico. He returned to LA when he was still only 19 and found himself at the centre of a blossoming folk-rock scene that included his friends Linda Ronstadt and Glenn Frey of the Eagles. Ever since, Browne’s emotive Laurel Canyon-adjacent sound has moved seamlessly with the decades, from swooning Seventies ballads to his Eighties rockers – not to mention a surprising experiment with reggae. Later came more socially conscious work, such as his 2020 benefit album for Haiti. There have also been numerous environmentalist initiatives...

Funding for the next edition of Biennale College Cinema, Venice Film Festival’s emerging filmmakers’ training and production initiative, will be hiked from €150,000 to €200,000 per project.
The increase comes off the back of a three-year sponsorship deal with French media giant Vivendi that was announced in July. “Vivendi will join us as our partner,” said Venice festival artistic director Alberto Barbera. “We believe this will have a significant impact on our projects in coming years.”

Not quite a musical, sort of a folktale, and almost but not entirely a hardscrabble hunk of post-war realism before all of a sudden changing gears, “Scarlet” – which opened the 2022 Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight sidebar on Wednesday – is a tricky project to pin down. Of course, director Pietro Marcello wouldn’t have it any other way.
Shooting in French for the first time, the Italian filmmaker made his name with documentaries before working found and historical footage into the world of make-believe with 2019’s “Martin Eden.” With this more ambitious (if more uneven) follow-up, Marcello continues at a similar pace, folding fact into fiction as he explores both the landscapes of rural Normandy in the aftermath of the First World War and the plight of the working poor, all through the crags of his leading man’s brow.
That brow (and those crags) belongs to Raphael (Raphaël Thiéry...

Rai Com is launching sales at the online EFM on Giuseppe Piccioni’s Fascist-era drama ‘L’Ombra del giorno,” starring Italian A-lister Riccardo Scamarcio (“Three Floors”) and Benedetta Porcaroli.
Pic, which Scamarcio produced, is a love story with a thriller twist set in 1938, two years before Italy entered World War II. It unfolds entirely in the central Italian town of Ascoli Piceno, a hidden gem with gorgeous medieval monuments, churches and piazzas.
The film’s title translates as “The Shadow of the Day,” a reference to the darkness of Fascism.
Luciano (Scamarcio), a wounded World War I veteran and a sympathizer of Fascism like most Italians at the time, runs a classy restaurant overlooking the town’s ancient square. He hires Anna (Porcaroli), a young woman with a secret, to work in the kitchen and they becomes romantically entangled. Then the onset of war prompts the pic to “veer off into thriller territory,...

Going through the list of previous Album of the Year Grammy winners, you’ll see some familiar faces. Taylor Swift and Adele pop up a couple times, you’ll see critically beloved records like Kacey Musgraves’s “Golden Hour” and Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” some veterans like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, as well as some big blockbusters like Santana’s “Supernatural.” But among those somewhat predictable picks over the last couple of decades, one sticks out immediately: Herbie Hancock for “River: The Joni Letters.” Now, if you’re on the younger side you might have no idea who Hancock even is, but if you were watching the 2008 Grammys then you were probably shocked by Hancock’s seemingly out-of-nowhere victory. Let’s take a look back.

Gwyneth Paltrow does not like watching her own performances, but she does love watching Margot Tenenbaum walk off a green-and-white bus in slow motion as Nico’s “These Days” plays. It’s one of the most famous moments in Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums” and filming it holds a place close to Paltrow’s heart. The actress joined her “Tenenbaums” director Anderson and co-stars Alec Baldwin, Owen Wilson, Luke Wilson, and Anjelica Huston this week at the Tribeca Festival to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film. The conversation led to Paltrow admitting Margot’s bus exit is perhaps the only scene in her career that she can stand to watch.
“My dad was there, and it was this very special day,” Paltrow said (via Entertainment Weekly). “I really hate, hate seeing myself in a movie ever. That’s kind of like the only scene that I can watch of myself,...

The first episode of “These Days,” about life and love in Covid times, was shot during the pandemic and features a delightful “hand dance” from star Marianne Rendon that uses the Zoom screen to incredibly creative effect. But what was more astonishing, is that William Jackson Harper had never seen her routine when they first performed it on camera.
Rendon’s dance has her moving her body and hands within the frame of the web camera and even writing a quick note upside down so that Harper on the other side of the Zoom call could actually read it.
“It took a while to really nail it and it took a lot of tries with Adam of how we wanted to frame it exactly,” Rendon said as part of TheWrap’s Virtual Sundance Studio. “But probably the best part about it was we didn’t show Will what it would look like,...

It would be naive to think the production shutdowns persisting across Hollywood wouldn’t also affect the output of independent artists, and the 2021 Sundance lineup has borne that unfortunate reality out. This year’s virtual event remains an ambitious undertaking — one more in line with the festival’s adventurous, experimental roots than its current trend-setting, Oscar-baiting footprint — but there are fewer films, and yes, fewer series, too. In its fourth year featuring a section dedicated to serialized stories and indie TV pilots, Sundance 2021 has just four shows in its newly titled Indie Series lineup: “4 Feet High,” “Seeds of Deceit,” “These Days,” and “Would You Rather.” That’s exactly half the total in last year’s Indie Episodic program and in line with the 40 percent drop in overall festival offerings.
Other TV-friendly options are scattered throughout the festival’s 11 categories, including “Philly D.A.,” a docuseries on civil rights attorney Larry Krasner...

In the last year Hollywood has attempted to showcase the world of Covid-19 in several ways, from the big screen to the small, from the perspective of the highly famous to the average person. The question remains: Do audiences want to see their current times replicated so quickly for consumption? It’s a concern that creator Adam Brooks and producer Peter Saraf certainly had while making the pilot for their series “These Days.”
“These Days” tells the story of Mae (Marianne Rendon), a dancer in New York City embarking on an internet relationship of some kind with Will (William Jackson Harper). The pilot hopes to find a home at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival and flesh out Mae’s story.
Brooks and Saraf started thinking of a story at the time the stay-at-home orders went into effect, hoping to create a universal plot that would touch on the times we’re living in.
