NBC’s “Dateline” battled it out with Fox’s WWE “Friday Night Smackdown” for the ratings championship belt on Friday night. While Fox, unsurprisingly, scored in the key 18-49 demographic, it was NBC that took home the highest average total viewership with an average of 2.5 million.
The latest WWE matchup fought its way to a 0.5 demo rating and 2.2 million total viewers, which is the second-largest audience for the brand since July of this year. It comes on the heels of last week, when “Smackdown” drew its largest total audience in a year with 2.4 million tuning in.
ABC’s latest episode of “Shark Tank” also caught viewers’ eye, managing to also secure 2.5 million total viewers. However, the network’s average was pulled down slightly by the 2.3 million that stuck around for a new episode of “20/20,” meaning that ABC came in second for average total viewers.

Jeremy Paxman is to step down from stalwart BBC quiz show University Challenge after almost three decades.
The former Newsnight presenter will film his last episode this fall and his final series will air from August to next Summer.
A new presenter will be announced later this week for the UK’s longest-running quiz show.
Paxman said he’d “had a blast hosting this wonderful series for nearly 29 years” and had “been lucky enough to work with an amazing team and meet some of the ‘swottier’ brains in the country.”
“It gives me hope for the future,” added Paxman, who is also a formidable political interviewer. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease last year.
Paxman led a revived BBC Two Newsnight, which is based on U.S. format College Bowl, from 1994 after the ITV Studios-produced show was axed by ITV in 1987 following a 25-year run helmed by Bamber Gascoigne.

Fantasy Island's low numbers got lower on Tuesday.
Fantasy Island Season 1 Episode 2 had 1.72 million viewers and a 0.30 rating in the demo.
Last week's series premiere managed 2.05 million viewers and a 0.38 rating.
If the show stabilizes at these levels, it could stand a chance at renewal, but it would really come down to how the show is performing digitally.
With linear ratings diving across the board, networks are looking at multiplatform viewers more than ever.
Lego Masters managed 1.4 million viewers and a 0.4 rating -- posting season lows.
America's Got Talent came down to 6.6 million viewers and a 0.8 rating -- also season lows.
The veteran reality series was still well ahead of the competition, leading the night.
College Bowl had 2.7 million viewers and a 0.4 rating -- steady with recent ratings.
The CW's numbers are understandably inflated.
This is due to MLB preemptions.
Stargirl did 1.1 million viewers and a 0.2 rating, doubling its season premiere in both metrics.
