According to director Justin Kurzel, Texan actor Caleb Landry Jones worked on his Australian accent while in quarantine after arriving in the country, by watching re-runs of 1990s episodes of Hey Hey It's Saturday (1971), Neighbours (1985) and Home and Away (1988).
Screen Tasmania refused to fund the film and Tasmania's premier expressed concern. The film was only released in three cinemas in Hobart however the State Cinema refused to advertise the movie.
Martin Bryant's mental age was estimated to be that of an 11 year old, with an IQ of 66.
The lead character and title of the film "Nitram" is "Martin" spelled backwards. Martin Bryant is the name of the actual shooter in the Port Arthur massacre.
