- A writer rows across to an island to work on a novel and to think over his relationship with a girl, both of which are threatening to fall apart due to lack of attention. Not unexpectedly, he is visited by a mysterious stranger who comes seeking shelter during a storm. Between bouts of writing, drinking, and dreaming, her appearances challenge his writing, his sense of self, and his grip on reality. A second visitation in the night confirms that he is inseparable from his characters and the answers he seeks lie in the process of creativity and in becoming part of his own story. On the island Face-Typeface-Type, the face is both the means of expression of an individual and the surface that needs to be filled, the typeface is the form chosen for that expression and the point of breaking through, and the type is both the process and the kind of person driven to partake in this mystery.—Josef Krebs
