Writer and producer Neal Baer, P.J. Palmer, filmmaker/producer behind the critically-acclaimed Lgbtq drama series Anyone But Me, and La-based writer Michael J. Wolfe are teaming to develop The Mystery of the 1957 Gay Wedding Photos as a docuseries. The series is being produced by Endemol Shine North America-owned studio Authentic Entertainment, which is working closely with the teams at One Archives Foundation in Los Angeles & John J. Wilcox, Jr. Archives at the William Way Lgbt Community Center in Philadelphia.
The collection of photos, which are among the first to document a gay wedding, were printed circa 1957 at a neighborhood drugstore in North Philadelphia. The images, which are currently housed with One National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the University of Southern California Libraries and the John J. The Writers Guild of America is asking screenwriters in all categories -- including new media -- to send in their work for awards consideration. The bicoastal labor organization has sent out an official call for submissions for the 2019 edition of its annual Writers Guild Awards.
In addition to honoring exemplary scripts across categories like film, TV, and video games, the Writers Guild Awards has recognized new media projects each year since 2011. Past winners have included Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward’s Anyone But Me (2011), Michael Cyril Creighton’s Jack in a Box (2013), and Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld’s High Maintenance (2015).
According to the criteria available on the Writers Guild Awards website, projects are eligible for consideration in the new media categories so long as they feature "episodes that are 15 minutes or less in length" and were "first exhibited on a new media platform."

You know you’re a TV nerd when your most anticipated awards announcements are the Writers Guild Awards. TV is a writer’s medium. Every TV fan awaits the Emmys, and some even bother to care about the Golden Globes, but most don’t know the major Guilds give out statues to television producers.
Nerdier still, I’m most interested in the nominees almost nobody writes about: web original short form comedies and dramas.

An awards show with a category dedicated entirely to new media recently set the date for its next ceremony. Submissions are now open for the 2017 Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards, which will be presented on February 19, 2017.
The WGA Awards honor exemplary scripts across film, TV, new media, video games, and several other media. Nominees in the new media category have typically included a majority of independently-produced web series. Past winners have included Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward’s Anyone But Me in 2011, Michael Cyril Creighton’s Jack in a Box in 2013, and Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld’s High Maintenance in 2015.
The WGA Awards will accept new media submissions until October 14th, and the process the WGA refers to as “Preliminary Series online voting” will begin 11 days later on the 25th. The final nominees will be announced on December 4th ahead of the February 2017 awards presentation.

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

Anyone But Me superfans can now sink their teeth into a new batch of clips. The cult favorite web series has added several Lost Scenes to its run, and they are available on Hulu.
The Lost Scenes, which Anyone But Me creators Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward revealed to us back in July, fill in gaps among the show’s 26 episodes. As Miller previously explained, The Lost Scenes serve as a game of sorts for fans. “When we air, at the end of each new one we’ll put up a link to a particular episode for the fans to watch and see for themselves if they agree with where we thought a scene might belong,” she said. “Meanwhile, we hope they’ll watch every season so they can enjoy playing detective when the new scenes launch.”

Anyone But Me, which gained a cult following across three web seasons, remains popular with its fans despite airing its final episode more than three years ago. In order to thank those fans for their loyalty, series creators Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward have planned a little gift: They will share ten additional scenes, which they will release one at a time under the title Anyone But Me: The Lost Scenes.
The Lost Scenes will be designed to fit into Anyone But Me’s story arc, which follows the lives of a pair of young, lesbian protagonists. The series’ two primary actresses, Rachael Hip-Flores and Nicole Pacent, will both reprise their roles for The Lost Scenes. As Miller explained in an e-mail to Tubefilter, the goal is to create new material that can relate to previous episodes without depending entirely on them:

Any doubts I had about Coach and/or Damon Wayans Jr. reassimilating into the show’s ecosystem? Gone. “Menus” was classic New Girl: Stupid, silly, glorious. If for nothing other than the “Work Bitch” workout montage (see below), this week’s episode wasn’t just a return to form. It was an elevation. It was also proof that this show is always, always better when it’s about the ensemble. Every person — even Winston! — had a specific, discrete part in the action, and I loved every second of it. So before I get to work (bitch), You get to work,...

Tina Cesa Ward's latest series combines he trademark romantic edge with a unique method of transmedia storytelling. The Anyone But Me co-creator has released Producing Juliet, a drama centered around a budding theater production, on both YouTube and Blip. Anyone But Me still stands as one of the heartfelt drama web series, and Producing Juliet continues Ward's work with both romance-driven storytelling and Anyone But Me's talented lead actress, Rachel Hip-Flores. This time, Flores plays Juliet, an aspiring playwright who strikes up a partnership with a producer named Rebecca (Alisha Spielmann). "At the heart of it, it’s a series about the trials of relationships and emotions," Ward told Tubefilter. After debuting the series at Raindance's WebFest, Ward has now placed the first episode online for our on demand consumption. Producing Juliet is much more than just a simple web production. As Hamlet would say, the play's the thing.

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

HBO's "Girls" and broadcast sitcoms like "The Mindy Project" and "The New Girl" push the envelope on female representations on television, but they aren't the only ones in the game of bringing complicated depictions of women to your screen. Online stories about women are quite rich as well and have been for years. A year after "lonelygirl15" rose to fame by giving geek boys their ultimate cam girl, Felicia Day's "The Guild" delivered a counter-punch: a serious awkward, geek girl, a trend that persists today. Major networks put women at the center of genre stories, as NBC did with "Gemini Division" and MTV did with "Valemont." Indie creators build out niches: "Anyone But Me"'s told the story of serious teen girls who were very seriously in love. "Awkward Black Girl" gave black women a complicated lead before "Scandal," and with natural hair to boot. And now that we...

Paris Geller is heading to Paradise...at least for one episode.
According to TVLine, Gilmore Girls alum Liza Weil will be appearing on an episode of Bunheads this January. Weil, known for her role as Rory Gilmore's frenemy Paris Geller on the WB/CW dramedy, has been tapped to play Truly's sister Milly on the January 14th episode of Bunheads; Milly and Truly don't get along, however, which means that there'll be an extra dose of tension and unease lingering around the Paradise Dance Academy. Truly's already rather high-strung and brimming with anxiety during most of her time on screen, so adding in a sister that doesn't like her can only make things worse, at least temporarily.
On the other hand, having Milly come in for only one episode might be a sign that the two will be patching things up, at least temporarily. They're obviously not going to be...

Anyone But Me, the dramatic romance web series by creators Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward, won a huge following with its heartfelt examination of young love. The show picked up tens of millions of viewers and won an award from the WGA. Though the series aired its final episode earlier this year, Miller and Ward have prepared one last gift for their fans in the form of DVD releases for Seasons Two and Three of Anyone But Me. The show will be released today, October 16th, on Amazon. Miller and Ward previously released a Season One DVD, and that item's success helped inform the decision to create a DVD for the show's other two seasons. "The success of Season 1 had pretty much everything to do with it," explained Miller. "I've always been surprised by the demand considering that you can watch everything online. Although we do have some special features that aren't available online.

Transmedia isn’t just a buzzword, but an engaging and cost effective tactic employed by content creators to entice fans and keep them entertained and engaged between regularly scheduled programming. Or that’s at least one of the things transmedia can be if it’s done well. And Tina Cesa Ward hopes to do it well. The co-creator of the hit web series Anyone But Me (which she made with Susan Miller and recently aired its series finale after three seasons, 25 episodes and tens of millions of views) is launching a new unsettling character drama with a touch of humor. It’s called Guards of Dagmar, and is set in the supernatural and mysterious world of “a residency for the developmentally and intellectually disabled. Tina Cesa Ward and Susan Miller bittersweetly announced last September Anyone But Me - the online original drama they created, wrote, and produced about a girl who likes girls in post-911 New York that has won a number of accolades and garnered a healthy fan base - would film one last episode. Last weekend they shot that episode and on Tuesday, March 20 they plan to release it.

Good People in Love focuses on two couples, one heterosexual and one homosexual, to explore the challenges and fears of being in a committed relationship. Two characters, Sarah (Streamy Award Winner Rachael Hip-Flores) and Scott (Jesse Wakeman), use the two couples and the idiosyncrasies of their relationships to prove their different points of view during a small engagement party. “I think with six very distinct characters that all have their own fears, ambitions and ideas about love and marriage the audience should find someone to connect with and recognize the situations these couples face on a personal level,” said Tina Cesa Ward over email. To say the series...

With three seasons, 25 episodes, 11+ million views, a number of accolades (including a few Streamy Awards), and a helluva lot of ardent fans, Anyone But Me just may be the most successful (in terms of both audience and acclaim) independently funded and produced piece of online original dramatic programming. That’s why its creators want to make sure its sendoff is something special. Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward are wrapping up the hit New York City and State -based web series about a girl who likes girls in a post-9/11 world, but they’re bringing back all the original cast for one last installment. The pair are securing funding for the series finale as we read, in hopes to raise enough cash to begin shooting in January or February. It’s kinda bittersweet, right? It’ll be sad to see a seemingly perennial programming staple of the online video world cease production,...

Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward launched Anyone But Me in 2008 under the umbrella of Strike.TV, the new media distribution company conceived in the Writers Guild of America picket lines. Since then, Strike.TV has found a new partner in MetaCafe and Miller and Ward’s original web series about the experiences of Vivian McMillan (played by Rachael Hip-Flores) - a postpubescent girl who likes girls living in a post-9/11 New York State and City world - has thrived. In three years, the show has uploaded 25 installments across three seasons (the last of which was partially supported by fans), which all together across all the show's distribution outlets have accumulated nearly 11 milion views. Not bad for an independent web drama! Now that Anyone But Me crossed is now a member of the eight figure viewcount club, I thought it might be a good time to dive a little deeper...

On The Comedy-Rich Web, An Elite Group Of Dramas Break Through, These Are Their Stories [Chu-chung!]
The hosts of web series "Anyone But Me," "The Bannen Way," and "Robert Townsend's Diary of a Single Mom" talk about the challenges facing online shows that aren't all about laughs and LOLCats.
You can’t swing a cat these days without hitting a comedy series on Vimeo, Daily Motion, or YouTube. But if you’re looking for drama, you’ll mostly still find it on the boob tube.
In 2009, 50% of adults watched comedy online compared to 31% in 2007, according to a 2010 Pew Research report. Even mainstream stars are taking their act to the smaller screen, like former Friend Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy, the winner of this year’s Webby Award for Best Comedy: Long Form or Series. “For whatever reason, someone has put out to the web world that comedy is what works online,” Tina Cesa Ward, executive producer, writer and director of the widely-acclaimed web drama Anyone But Me [above, below], tells Fast Company.

Speaking of nerd culture, Jeff Koenig and the crew at Omf Geek recently put the call out for contestants for their “upcoming reality game show” Geek Vs. Geek. The program poses the question, “Are you geek enough?” and then seeks out answers through a series of head to head competitions hosted by Anyone But Me’s Rachael Hip-Flores and shot by The Hayley Project’s Andy Park. Participants debate age-old topics like Han Solo or Indiana Jones, Metachlorine counts versus angels incarnate, and Frodo or Willow. Judging from the trailer, it looks a player vs. player version of Beat the Geeks for the online generation. Geek vs. Geek is slated to start shooting in November, but not before announcing its final eight contestants during New York Comic Con on October 16. If you think you’ve lived in your parent’s basement long enough, been ridiculed in school for a sufficient amount of time,...

It’s a big week in the Big Apple for the web series world. At least two New York City-based independent productions debuted their sophomore or junior seasons in the past two days. Here’s a look at the premieres and what fans can expect from the next chapters in a teenage “coming of age story in a post 9/11 world” and a “dramedy about the extremes people go to when faced with an economic crash.” Anyone But Me returned for its third season by way of an exclusive online premiere on Monday, thanks to a more than successful web-a-thon and a helluva lot of fans with cash to give and a wishes for creators Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward to continue the storyline. Rachael Hip-Flores has perhaps the coolest name in web series. Try it, it’s fun to say. The star of indie drama Anyone But Me has won over critics and those of us that write about these things. She even won a Streamy Award last year as Vivian for Best Female Actor in a Drama. That wasn’t the only award for the New York-based web series which even scored a Writer’s Guild award last month that left co-cretor Susan Miller virtually speechless with joy when our own Josh Cohen caught up with her after the Abm win. “Oh boy oh boy oh girl oh girl oh girl!!! We made something happen without waiting for anyone else to say yes or no to it – and it has turned out to be one of the most important and fulfilling things in my life,” said Miller. “Anyone But Me has a lot of friends,...

The Writers Guild of America hosted its 63rd Annual Writers Guild Awards (or, as Kristen Schaal called them, ‘The Introverted Emmys’) on Saturday night at simultaneous ceremonies in New York City and Los Angeles. Schaal played the role of gracious, accommodating, well-timed, and hysterical host to the WGA East East event, introducing presenters like Judah Friedlander, Kathleen Turner, and John Larroquette to dispense Whale Tail statuettes (this kind of whatle’s tail, not that kind) to the writing teams behind Boardwalk Empire, 30Rock, and The Colbert Report. Band of Brothers and Gossip Girl star Matthew Settle had the honor of announcing the winners of the WGA’s newly introduced new media categories. In his intro, Settle likened the burgeoning entertainment medium to many of the young characters on Gossip Girl - hot, exciting, and without any discernible form of income. A great line, even if we know it’s not necessarily accurate.

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.
