If you like movies that make you go "WTF" then this is for you.
Oh my. "Goreality" is quite an experience. First I should point out that this is a micro-budget movie (I'm talking subatomic) shot on consumer grade video. The director was also the camera operator and the lead actor. Like, all at once. Sometimes you can tell he was holding the camera while delivering his lines lol. And according to the trivia section, he was the producer and editor. So if you like "grassroots" productions, well this is so flippin' grassroots that you can smell the septic tank.
If that didn't scare you off, then cool, you might like this movie.
The next thing to know is, although it's listed under the category "horror", don't expect any thrills, chills and/or gore. In fact, I don't recall seeing a single drop of blood (maybe that's because the budget wouldn't cover carpet cleaning).
Instead of blood & guts, what we get is actually an artistic Faustian theme of "how far am I willing to go for the sake of my craft" but with a lot of campiness and randomness to confuse the heck out of you. "Goreality" is the strange chronicle of an amateur filmmaker doing his thing ...with an occasional unsolved murder here & there. And a few bizarro subplots such as the incestuous lesbian sisters both played by the same actress (loved the "makeout" scene haha). Um, did I mention this movie will make you go "WTF"?
It's probably starting to sound like a silly comedy, but no, there's not much humor most of the time, aside from the sheer weirdness. What makes this movie entertaining is that the humor is very low key. Our hero, sporting the most preposterous wig you've seen since Mrs. Doubtfire, has a perpetual "I just flew in from Cleveland and boy are my arms tired" attitude which is really funny juxtaposed against the other actors who seem to be making a serious effort of the script (with varying degrees of success).
Subtle hints show that the movie isn't afraid to make fun of itself, such as when one of the characters refuses to do a scene because the camera is so cheap. Our hero filmmaker blurts out something about how it's an artistic preference and then sheepishly mumbles "I should go." For some reason that killed me.
Other times the movie will shift tone to something more artsy and ponderous: random shots of insects, road footage (even though the whole movie occurs within 2 city blocks), home movies and characters who were never introduced. At times it's almost like the legendary Russian director Tarkovsky were calling the shots. Or maybe Ed Wood?
Not quite comedy, not quite drama, and definitely not a slasher horror flick, "Goreality" is in a league of its own: the "WTF" category. It might be exactly what you're looking for. Or it might make you want to strangle the person next to you.
