Very intense, sometimes hard to watch
manonlemieux20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This was a good docuseries, but like most today, could have been a bit shorter. That being said, it was really good. I had a hard time watching it during some interviews of the family members. To see them still so heart broken after all this time is just so hard to watch.

I also had a hard time thinking of the bikers (bikkies) going in with their intentions, seeing the kids behind them. There's no way they didn't see them. What kind of psycho can do that. I know it was ordered, but for them it's easier when you don't have to do it, don't have to see it. They're scum too, but there's something that affects me to the core knowing those guys went in with the intention of burning the place down knowing kids were behind them. I can only hope they're tormented by what they did.

Indepth and emotional expose of blatant corruption
OneAnjel17 December 2023
I'd never heard of this tragedy until seeing this film but it certainly has compelling information to support the idea that a cover up took place after an intentional fire. It's very emotional at times, mainly in the first episode as they detail the event. Truly haunting. In modern times, we wouldn't find a park that has such a death trap and no sprinkler system. Some could say it was an accident waiting to happen. But if this truly had been an accident, it would have been properly investigated. So right away we can see something was amiss. Imagine the scene of 7 deaths being completely cleared on day 2. That's unheard of. Unfortunatly, that level of corruption is still around today but most countries have better regulations so there can never be such a tragedy.

The film is well pieced together and may seem long to someone who doesn't appreciate that the filmmaker is attempting to focus on the emotion and authenticity of each participant as well as etch the true horror of this event into the viewers mind. I think they took the right approach, you can not rush such an in-depth look at this shocking set of circumstances.

Not sure
fionajp10 January 2024
Never heard of this case but that's not unexpected as it was in Australia. It's very interesting, but I find the reporter quite pushy in getting interviewees to agree with her point of view. There's nothing about how old the ride was, how it had been neglected for years, how none of the safety issues had been put in place, how everything was covered in tar asphalt which would burn and smell. Yes there was certainly a very big miscarriage of Justice to all the families to not get to the full truth, but I certainly don't fell this helped at all. And it's interesting to see how the company handled their own report over this and why they wouldn't hand over anything when asked by an independent inquiry.

OUTSTANDING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM INTO ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST TRAGIC BUT CORRUPT EVENTS IN OUR HISTORY
philstrachan16 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Caro and team have done an outstanding job with this doco! Where do I begin? I'm stunned but also not suprised at all. In the 70s and 80s the Australian police and judicial system were at their most corrupt. It was such a tragedy when these kids lost their lives in an amusement park ride, while meant to be having fun. Electrical malfunction, we ALL believed for so long, has now been proven without a doubt to be absolutely false. As the tangled web is unravelled, the key culprits in this mass murder do not suprise me in the least. Saffron was one of the evilest men to walk Australian soil, as with "Justice" Murphy, et al, can be proven to be 100% responsible for this and the subsequent coverup. Australia has a track record of totally corrupt police forces. We never teach our kids here to trust a policeman because of the past actions of not a few but WHOLE forces in each State. Every decade presented MASSIVE corruption in each State's police forces. The politicians are ALWAYS corrupt, and still are (Adolph McGowan, Dan Andrews) - that's the nature of politics. And the underworld crime figures that flourished because of this is incomprehensible. "Justice" Lionel Murphy's wiki page omits he was the most rotten, corrupt, vile human being that was ever in such a high position. Premier Neville Wran was just a common gutter criminal. And the list continues... But the poor child victims and their families on-going suffering is just heartbreaking - all over land these men wanted to develop, equalling $s to them. Human life lost meant nothing to them. This doco shows irrefutable proof of what these men did without any regard for humanity. I'm truly disgusted. I was a kid myself when this happened, and I've never forgotten it, but to now know the truth just sickens me. Every 10 minutes of this doco made me go "this can't get worse", can it? As Caro revealed more details, it did. I'm gobsmacked, VERY angry, and shed several tears for the victims as this story unfolded. Caro deserves a journalistic award for this. Outstanding work. You want to know TRUE Australian history - watch this.

I never thought I'd feel sorry for an amusement ride, but here I am
QueenieGuldbaek22 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I saw this documentary for the 1st time, I was speechless. I couldn't even bring myself to watch the rest of it, viewing the 1st part was sufficient. However, from watching the 1st part, what I can say is that I feel sympathy for not only the 7 victims and their families, but also for the Ghost Train itself.

Call it weird, call it insensitive, but I genuinely developed a sense of sympathy for the GT; for all these years, it was blamed for having caused that terrible tragedy, when in reality, it was deliberately lit; it had no more power or influence over the event than any of the people aboard it.

Of course I feel sympathy for the victims and their families as well. I can't even begin to imagine being Ms. Godson, Jason, or any of the other family members/friends of the victims; no parent should have to witness the death of their child, or lose their family in a place where people go to have fun.

I felt terrible for Ms. Godson; she had to witness the loss of both her children, and her husband, while she was saved by getting ice cream instead of riding the GT. In fact, Ms. Godson's tragedy is one of the biggest reasons I lost faith in Christianity. I simply couldn't see why if God loves Ms. Godson why he'd let her entire family die.

Infuriating and painful
landfather-2115322 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This documentary shows just how corrupt government can get. The poor families in this mini series documentary went through hell when they first lost their children, then went down that same rabbit hole with what they learned from the investigative journalist. They deserve...no...they're OWED justice. So many broken hearts, and their government could care less. It was a very gripping story with an ending that shouldn't happen to anyone. The lies, deceit and complete lack of compassion from their government officials is staggering. Those parents have to live with this for the rest of their lives and it completely breaks the heart.

As Many Disturbing Questions as Potential Answers
chaplaindad7 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Up front, "Exposed" is good story-telling. Well organized, professionally presented, intriguing and emotionally evocative, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and its investigative reporters make a compelling argument the the Luna Park fire of 1979 was a criminal act by a mob boss who wanted the prime Sydney real estate for his own. Allegations of police corruption and purposeful ignorance of standard investigative procedures make for edge-of-your-seat viewing. That's the good.

The bad is what is not included: discussion of fire safety inspection documentation that proves there is validity to the accidental nature of the fire. On public record is the 1977 government safety inspection of the Ghost Train attraction and the legally required upgrades that the park owners failed to make. Built in the 1930's, the 40+ year old ride was made with highly flammable materials. The roof was found to be in such poor repair, walking on it was forbidden. It was covered by asphalt soaked tar paper with a further coating of asphalt tar, clearly a fire danger. Safety officials had ordered numerous safety upgrades including added emergency lighting, adding another emergency exit, and the addition of fire watchers to the attraction staff until the place was made safe. Most damning is the fact that the false fireplace where witnesses reported seeing real flames early in the fire was not original to the ride, but added at some point reasonably close to the time of the disaster. When the 1979 fire occurred, the owners had made few of the legally required safety upgrades including the fire watchers. Of course, if your contention as investigative reporters is that hirelings of a mob boss engineered the fire as an act of arson, the idea the place was a death-trap coupled with the failures of the owners don't do much to help that theory.

Further, ABC took heavy criticism for its corruption allegations against the NSW premier serving at the time of the fire. ABC itself commissioned an independent review of its evidence by investigative journalist Chris Masters and academic Rodney Tiffen. When the independent review yielded positive comments about the police corruption and crime organization involvement, but criticism of its treatment of the NSW premier, ABC accepted the positives and rejected their own investigators' negative conclusions.

Finally in 2021, the NSW coroner called for ABC to turn over its tapes as evidence to support a new coroner's inquiry into the Luna Park fire. ABC unbelievably refused, raising allegations that the ABC investigative reporters fudged the data in their favor, including reports they coached at least some of their sources in order to give credence to their corruption theory.

Bottom line: a good story but sadly, burdened with questions of veracity that take wind out of the sails for this tragic tale of loss, human suffering, and a call for justice to be done.

the first 2 parts are compelling
mrocco-16 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It was hard to watch this, very raw to watch the parents of children who tragically perished in this monstrous act. The takeaway for me is that the fire was started intentionally by some hoodlum youths. There was clearly some corruption in the fact that the few corrupt upper echelon police officials wanted it 'case closed' and could possibly be for their own financial gain by acquiring the land. But no way did they even come close to showing that these few were actually behind the fire, that was a real stretch to me. The story line they pursue by accusing these officials of being behind the original act of arson seemed way out of line , but that is the kind of story the public eats up. I almost turned off Episode 3 because it was sooo far fetched.

Tragic Case - Weird Documentary
stevewalls-767609 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The first and second episodes are the best and most important parts of this entire documentary. This was such a horrific tragedy. There are so many unanswered questions from the night that the ghost train fire happened. The first and second episodes bring to light, some interesting and shocking information. These two episodes are what engaged me; but the 3rd episode is filled with a big cluster of poorly researched conspiracy theories, and speculations that go absolutely nowhere. The big conclusion found at the end of this documentary, is mainly based on the opinions of angry, stressed out , retired police officers ... that are just as desperate for answers as everyone else.

Bloated Documentary

Warning: Spoilers
What a tragedy! Never heard of this Ghost Train fire resulting in 7 deaths (6 of them children). Cannot recommend this documentary however. At almost 4.5 hours over 3 episodes, it provides little more insight than reading the associated Wikipedia article (which can be read in a matter of minutes). Save yourself the time. There also is little hard evidence of the police corruption and mob involvement so assertively made at the conclusion. I heard a lot of hearsay and innuendo, with strings connecting a lot of pictures, but not a lot of hard evidence. It is just as likely that an old building built in the 1930's and filled with paper mache and other flammable artifacts and with no sprinkler systems accidentally caught fire. The true crime is that the amusement parked was never held liable. That would have been a more interesting investigation.

Not Even Sure They Proved Murder?
graceclark-5864212 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly, I had never heard of the Ghost Train Fire event in my life. But I'm always interested in accidents and tragic stories involving amusement park rides. Can I just say that Luna Park clown effigy was terrifying??? I don't know that I would have wanted to have gone to that Park as a child.

Anyway, I can't even imagine what those poor families and the survivors went through. Made me bawl rivers of tears, that is how real this retelling felt through The eyes of the people reliving it. Yet, they try for two entire episodes to prove that this tragic fire was not an accident and intentionally set, first by biker gangsters? Then it evolves to a gangster Mafia type member that's in the government? Um, I can't even wrap my mind it.

Martin Sharp and his associates did not spend enough time proving that the fire was not an accident, and many of their arguments are flawed. Firstly, just because a fire erupts quickly that by no means means that it was started by an accelerant, as they try to say. The fluorescent paint, the tar covering the walls, all of those surfaces when burning could have smelled like accelerant!

I also counted, the first witnesses to the fire were noted at 10:00 p.m., the second witnesses were at 10:10 p.m and by then the flames were strong. 10 minutes was more than enough time for an average fire to grow. Secondly, I have also seen fires create the roaring sound the one park employee describes, and shoot up into the air without accelerant: It's called an ignition point. Every flammable material has an ignition point, particularly when it is a ride full of paper mache objects... Look at the Kings Cross Station fire tragedy if you don't believe me. The fire at that train station shot flaming tunnels of Fire like two jet engines, no accelerant required. Strange things happen and it's not because of accelerant!

Thirdly, why didn't these investigators ever examine or test the theory that the FAN blowing underneath the imitation fireplace could have overheated?? Overheating fans are the number ONE reason fires start. Here's another factor; the ghost train ride was old, built in the 30s. How do they know that there were not a dozen safety ricks?? Martin Sharp and his journalists never addressed that. They wanted to go straight into conspiracy theories.

Fourthly, they " disprove" that the fire could have been started by an electrical malfunction "because the power in the ride was functioning", that on its face is bogus. Go YouTube it, there are electrical fires that burn up an entire room and the power is still on! An electrical malfunction does not always cause the power to shut off. It depends on where the short is in the wire; the power outlet's circuit could also be completely separate from the Power box and only blow the outlet. There are so many different factors.

Lastly, I do not doubt that troubled teenage visitor at the park that night saw those biker gangsters bragging about using kerosene to start the fire on the ghost train. He definitely saw biker gangsters, he even described them in detail. The bikers likely even said they " lit up the ghost train ride". Playing devil's advocate here, his story is not proof that these bikers did anything. Gangs brag all the time, bragging what terrible things you did is part of your street reputation.

I'm sorry to say this, but these Australian investigators and these grieving family members are not fully investigating every single avenue of thought. They seem desperate to think that there was some great big conspiracy behind the Ghost Train burning down, like they don't want to accept that it could have just been an overheated fan. It was 1979, safety at amusement parks was barely thought of. And an old, closed dark ride, with no sprinklers, full of flammable paper and tar, with fans that probably ran constantly and were never checked for electric shortages, was a fire DEATH TRAP waiting to happen!

Now, undoubtedly there was a cover-up. You see Australian government absolutely hindered all investigation, and outright lied. That could be because they don't want fear and Hysteria to spread about amusement parks not being safe, and they also don't want stories to spread that Park managers often cut safety corners. Perhaps, the local government knew of many many safety violations that Luna Park might be committing and they didn't want to reveal that they knew about it. There didn't have to be a giant, Mafia hit to destroy the ghost train to gain Luna Park. And that conspiracy plot made no sense by the way.

Come on, life is not a Hollywood movie. And this is really hard for people to believe, but oftentimes the most senseless tragic things happen and there isn't a great big villain to blame. Yes, the park inspectors and the park management should have been better at managing safety at the park and they should have been punished. But I say they do NOT make their case that the Ghost Train and the people that died in that fire died because of some Australian mafia guy.

It's truly horrific what these family members and survivors of the Ghost Train tragedy went through. I know they want someone to be punished, they want justice. And Australia has an evil government that does not allow freedom of speech or Freedom of information. So no wonder these people think that something more foul occurred with the level of corruption they see. But here is the reality, corrupt government covers up any criminality even if it is murder or just negligence. Because evil government has no sense of justice in either case.

I am not sure Justice lies in their theory that the Australian mafia boss started the fire. Hopefully the peace of God will find all these poor people. That's the best comfort they can have.

Strange documentary
TomatoesareRotten14 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Continually "padded out" with repeat scenes, e.g. The high end cocktail party where all the "players" would congregate. The lad that managed to escape the fire and states " it ruined my life...and I never wanted to talk about" is present throughout the series ? It seems a little disingenuous that all the identified and corrupt individuals are, in the most part, long dead and will never be brought to justice, even long after the 30 year time bar on relevant paperwork has passed ? Neville Wran ( former PM ) had been indicted, several times , throughout his tenure ( for similar types of corruption ), but none of that is covered ? This documentary felt like an exercise in lauding the investigation by the journalists, rather than the case itself. Very odd.
