Indiana Jones and the Saucermen from Mars

Warning: Spoilers
Steven Spielberg & Harrison Ford open this short subject by shedding some light on the real-life mystery of the Crystal skulls. What are they? Where did they come from? How old are they? Did someone make them, and if so, how? Neither Guy Hendrix Dyas nor John Rosengrant has the answer, but they do take center stage in the remainder of this documentary to explain how the crystal skull prop was designed and created for the fourth Indiana Jones film.

Since crafting the skull out of actual crystal or glass would have been too fragile and too difficult to get right, a lightweight Water clear urethane was used. It was hollow, but made to look to carry a lot more weight by having it filled with amongst other things a miniature crystal brain. Positively Ooky to say the least! Effect maestro Stan Winston is briefly seen in behind the scenes footage and as he passed away between the theatrical and DVD release of the picture, his studio is represented by Rosengrant here.

The Winston studio also provided the saucer-men for the picture: the 4 foot Roswell 'grey' alien as well as the nine foot towering crystal skull skeletons of beings from the 'space between spaces' In latter's being inspired by fragile and sculpture-like bird bones. Apparently they also gave each skeleton a slightly different hue to differentiate so they could tell each other apart when having a chat lounging around in their throne room (designed by Dyas). This featurette nicely leads into the next one on the second disc of the Crystal Skull DVD boxed set: Iconic Props.
