It's tough for TV shows to recover from bad storylines, but Community, Parks and Rec, and Friends managed to bounce back. Community's "gas leak year" and Friends' Joey/Rachel arc were disliked, but the shows course-corrected with new seasons. Always Sunny faced backlash over Dennis leaving, but the show brought him back while Stranger Things moved on from its lowest-rated episode.
It can be very difficult for a TV show to come back from an awful storyline, although there were a select few who managed to do just that. From misjudged romantic encounters to characters whose stories just weren’t working, an awful storyline can be the death of a great TV show, but luckily, creators, writers, and showrunners have occasionally spotted their mistakes and come back from the brink of disaster. It can be difficult to undo an awful storyline, but, when there was enough good faith from viewers,...

When Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced as a TV series for Prime Video in 2021, there were plenty of reasons to be skeptical about the project.
It was based on a movie of the same name that did reasonably well but isn't especially well-remembered.
The announced starring duo of Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge was intriguing, especially considering that both performers were credited as creators.
Both had a history of starring in and creating successful series, including Glover with Atlanta and Waller-Bridge with Fleabag. Plus, Waller-Bridge served as the showrunner in the first season of Killing Eve, another prestige series about an assassin.
But then Waller-Bridge dropped out of the project just a few months after it was announced due to "creative differences," with Maya Erskine replacing her as the show's female lead. Glover and Francesca Sloane are credited as the co-creators.
Beyond that, the series had its premiere delayed repeatedly,...

The 21st century saw the debut of many great comedy shows, proving that the traditional sitcom format was in dire need of reinvention. Compared to the standard “nuclear family” style programs of the 1980s and 1990s, the new century’s comedies pushed the boundaries with their content, broke traditional rules of formatting, and opened themselves up to more diverse creative perspectives. While programs like The Office and How I Met Your Mother became major hits that secured significant ratings and awards success, many of the best comedies of the era earned more niche followings. Although it never became “mainstream,” the comedy series Community stood out for its memorable characters, inventive storylines, and self-referential humor. While creator Dan Harmon has teased the possibility of a continuation that would unite the original cast, Community is best left alone without a feature film spinoff.

Abbott Elementary subverted sitcom tropes with Principal Ava subplot in season 3, episode 8. The show's humor focuses on character interplay, not self-referential or TV convention parody. The mockumentary format adds classic sitcom feel to Abbott Elementary while staying contemporary.
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Abbott Elementary season 3, episode 8
While Abbott Elementary season 3 has leaned into many sitcom tropes, the mockumentary also subverted one of the biggest with episode 8’s Principal Ava subplot. Abbott Elementary isn’t a self-aware meta-sitcom like 30 Rock or Community, where every episode mocks the tropes of ordinary sitcoms. Peacock fully embraces Community as the streaming service adopts the critically acclaimed series ahead of the anticipated movie featuring much of the original cast.

The hit sitcom, which chronicles the daily chaos occurring at Greendale Community College, called NBC home during its first five seasons before moving to Yahoo! Screen for Season 6. Once any story hits the internet, it doesn’t just belong to the people who made it; fan art, fiction, edits, music, tattoos, and all sorts of reinterpretation follow, to say nothing of the barrage of reboots and remakes the corporations running the entertainment world are so enamored of. But there’s something interesting that happens, from both an artistic and an audience perspective, when much loved characters get transposed into a medium where their range of expression and even their physicality is different.

While the live-action Marvel Universe is dominated by the Avengers, Marvel comics have had a different character hierarchy. The entire multiverse seemed to revolve around the stories of the X-Men as a whole and while the Avengers were important, they simply weren’t as significant as the mutants. They were the reason for the success of the franchise and the culturally significant impact it has had over decades.
X-Men (2000)
It would seem, that effect does not get brushed past by anyone, as the showrunner of X-Men ’97 revealed an interesting theory he has about the live-action universe that Marvel has created. One that suggests that none of the MCU projects, Sam Rami’s Spider-Man films, and even DC projects would have been successful or existed had it not been for one animated Marvel show.

The final scenes of sitcoms hold a significant impact in leaving lasting impressions on audiences as beloved characters say goodbye. Highlights from series like Arrested Development, Community, and The Big Bang Theory showcase memorable and fitting closing moments. The final scenes of iconic sitcoms like Jane The Virgin, Friends, and The Office perfectly wrap up long-running storylines with emotional and humorous touches.
Warning: This article discusses the use of drugs.
In the world of binge-worthy sitcoms, the very final scene of a show reflects upon its past and wraps it up as a whole, often making reference to the first episode or a season arc. The finale of any TV show faces a lot of expectations, let alone the last scene, as it not only sets a tone for the show overall but also should leave audiences feeling content with the show's ending, regardless of whether they want it to finish.

When it was announced in September of 2022 that a Community movie was really happening, the news felt both improbable and inevitable. Improbable because what was NBC-Universal doing pumping more money into a comedy that was ratings-challenged from the moment it premiered during the fall semester TV season of 2009? And inevitable because said comedy had managed to survive for six whole seasons and weather seismic changes behind the scenes, persevering on the strength of great reviews, a loyal if hardly huge fanbase, and the self-fulfilling prophecy of a hashtag. Community was never a big hit. But somehow, it cheated Nielsen destiny and became a great show not canceled before its time. It willed #SixSeasonsAndAMovie into a reality.

Throughout its six season run, "Community" encountered a genuinely impressive set of challenges. First of all, series creator, Dan Harmon, was kicked off his own show, which considering his behavior wasn't all that shocking. An admitted heavy drinker, Harmon also became notorious for what The Hollywood Reporter referred to as his "eleventh-hour rewrites, or 'Harmon passes,'" which he would foist upon the cast and crew during filming. Harmon also fell out with star Chevy Chase, and the show was known for its long shooting days and erratic schedule. No wonder Alison Brie described the "Community" set as "frantic, frenetic, chaotic"
Then, there was the constant threat of cancellation, which loomed over "Community" until the show was actually canceled by NBC after its fifth season. Yahoo's then-new streaming service, Yahoo! Screen, picked up the show for its sixth and final season that seemed destined to fail. And fail it did.

Actor Joel McHale reflected on an altercation he had with his fellow Community co-star Chevy Chase that occurred on the set.
McHale, known for his main character role as Jeff Winger on the TV series, has been candid about disagreements that reportedly transpired between himself and Chase, who played the controversial offensive character Pierce Hawthorne. McHale even dedicated a chapter of his 2016 memoir, Thanks for the Money, to a “step-by-step on how to fight Chevy Chase.”
The topic arose in the podcast conversation when McHale highlighted his willingness to address the conflicts that arose with Chase while they were on the show. When asked about the nature of the incidents, McHale revealed that physical altercations did occur, with instances where one shoved or pushed the other. McHale described the confrontations as “advanced horseplay,” and humorously remarked, “You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex. It wasn’t fun.

Dan Harmon has established a pretty neat little entertainment empire, creating the beloved cult hit "Community" before co-creating "Rick and Morty" and overseeing Apple TV+'s "Strange Planet" and Fox's "Krapopolis." But it's been a rocky road to success for Harmon, who was previously kicked off his own show before being rehired, and in 2018 had to publicly apologize for his prior mistreatment of "Community" writer Megan Ganz — and those are just a couple of examples of the man's controversies. Despite these debacles, however, Harmon has been an entertainment mainstay for well over a decade at this point, and during that time he's not only managed to create several of his own successful shows, but he's also apparently been fairly influential in perhaps the biggest Hollywood success story of the modern era: the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although “Community” has remained a cult favorite show since its 2009 debut, Chevy Chase, one of the series’ stars, has been very vocal that he didn’t enjoy making it. Similarly, fellow cast member Joel McHale hasn’t been afraid to slam Chase in the press. Yet their on-set feud turned physical too, with one ending when McHale injured the veteran comedian.
McHale was a guest on a recent episode of Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast, where he described a section of his 2016 memoir “Thanks for the Money” which included a “step by step on how to fight Chevy Chase.”
When Rosenbaum asked if their on-set altercations were verbal or physical, McHale confirmed there were multiple physical incidents.
“It was an advanced horseplay,” he said, joking, “You know, horseplay, and then it always turned into sex.”
From there, he described the reality of the situation, saying, “It would get a little contentious.

Drama plagued Chevy Chase's time on Community, with his clashes with Dan Harmon leading to Harmon's firing. Chase's departure was abrupt, with his character Pierce being killed off to give Troy a proper exit. Despite rumors of a Community movie, Chase's involvement remains uncertain as most of the original cast is set to return.
After starring as Pierce Hawthorne since the show's beginning, Chevy Chase left Community in season 4, and his exit was notoriously not on good terms. Chevy Chase's Community character, Pierce, was a longtime student at Greendale Community College and the most antagonistic member of the core study group thanks to his offensive comments and malicious behavior. Hollywood’s biggest night (that isn’t the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards) is coming up, with the 96th Academy Awards taking place this Sunday, March 10. Six seasons and a movie -- it's finally happening!
A Community movie is apparently in the works, with star Joel McHale stating the film will begin shooting in 2024.
It's been nine years since we last saw our favorite Greendale Human Beings, and we have a lot of questions about the upcoming film. Here's everything we know so far about the Community movie.
Community Movie Release Date
There has been a lot of back and forth about whether a Community movie would ever be made. With the famous "six seasons and a movie" line from the show, fans have long held out hope.
In September 2022, Peacock ordered a Community movie. However, series creator Dan Harmon later expressed concern that the movie wouldn't happen at all despite being "nearly done" with the script.
In January 2023, Joel McHale said the movie would be filming that summer, but production was canceled due to the actor and writer strikes.

For years, Netflix has been one of the most popular streaming services, offering viewers tons of new content every month. Of course, Netflix has more competition than ever, as new streaming services debut every year and Disney+ and Prime Video continue to gain subscribers.

Following a study group of college students at Greendale Community College, Community is well on its way to becoming a movie after six glorious seasons, just as Abed (Danny Pudi) predicted. Community was only popular with a small group of fans, but now, 15 years after its pilot, the show has seen its small fanbase convert into a cult, with more viewers chiming in to follow the series. The show's popularity ‒ both by means of its availability on multiple streaming platforms and the memes created by the online fanbase, has helped the show finally come back with And A Movie despite its cancelation.

Joel McHale admits it wasn't always a Community-friendly vibe during his time on the classic NBC sitcom, as the actor reveals how things got physical between himself and co-star Chevy Chase.
Speaking on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, McHale opened up about his tense on-set relationship with the controversial Chase during their time together on Community. McHale recalled an exchange with Chase during a photo-op when things turned sour quickly, an incident he previously alluded to in his book, Thanks for the Money: How To Use My Life Story to Become the Best Joel McHale You Can Be. "There's a chapter in the book I wrote about fighting him, how to fight him...[We fought] multiple times. There was pushing and shoving... It was advanced horseplay. The Community movie inches closer to the finish line with creator Dan Harmon teasing the script is almost complete.
"Six seasons and a movie" has been the battle cry of Community fans since the series' original run ended in 2015. The show has also become a case study on the impact of grassroots support on a sitcom's longevity; while it's arguable if Community went out on a high note like Parks and Recreation and 30 Rock, it still endures as one of the shows that didn't end with a whimper when the final season wrapped up. Community also has an opportunity to tie up loose ends left by the show (or at least offer a cathartic epilogue) when the movie drops. In an interview with Variety, creator Dan Harmon fuels hopes the movie would start filming soon.

Community was one of the most creative sitcoms of the 2010s, but the show suffered with key members of the original cast departing the project throughout the seasons. Created by Dan Harmon, also known for the hit animated series Rick & Morty, Community goes through the chaotic academic life of a suspended lawyer and his study group at Greendale Community College.
Harmon himself attended a community college in his younger years, collecting personal experiences that formed the basis of his comedy series. Community aired for six seasons and has a movie on the way, finally accomplishing the prophecy of "Six Seasons and a Movie" uttered by Abed, one of the main characters, in Season 2. Filled with great pop culture references and memorable theme episodes, Community was also known for its stellar cast, which unfortunately withered away as the show went on.

There's a popular quip among programmers, originally attributed to Bell Labs' Tom Cargill, which states that 90% of code accounts for 10% of development time, and the last 10% of code takes up the other 90% of development time. A similar rule applies in screenwriting, as "Community" creator Dan Harmon admitted when he addressed Donald Glover's claims that the script for the upcoming "Community" movie is complete.
"I can confirm Donald Glover's report that I told him the script was done, but I will also say Donald's sources are so unreliable because the script is always 'almost done,'" Harmon joked to Variety. Indeed, finishing a movie script is really only the first step. Just ask any screenwriter with a file name along the lines of moviescriptfinaldraft2FINAL_v4.pdf sitting on their computer.
So, with certain aspects of the "Community" movie still in flux, what is certain about it? "It's set on...

Harmon is excited for fans to see their favorite characters on the big screen and promises a complete end to the story. While some cast members are confirmed for the Community movie, Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown have yet to sign on, and Chevy Chase's character will not appear due to his character's death in the series.
The long-awaited Community movie is almost ready to go, with creator Dan Harmon confirming that the script is nearly ready. Speaking with Variety, Harmon also offered some details about the Community revival, revealing that the movie will be set on the campus of Greendale Community College.

Abbott Elementary season 3 boldly parodies sitcom tropes with hilarious twists on anti-drug PSAs. The episode "Smoking" showcases staff drug confessions, exposing complexities in drug education and hypocrisy. Abbott Elementary cleverly challenges traditional sitcom messages, offering nuanced insights on drug use discussions.
While Abbott Elementary is a relatively traditional sitcom, that did not stop season 3, episode 4 from ruthlessly parodying one of the genre’s worst tropes. The late ‘00s and the 2010s saw the rise of meta sitcoms like 30 Rock and Community, which spent as much time deconstructing and spoofing sitcom staples as they did enacting them. These were self-aware television comedies that leaned on the fourth wall, making self-referential jokes as they took apart sitcom conventions. However, this style fell out of vogue as more traditional sitcoms regained popularity. Abbott Elementary is an example of one such traditional sitcom.

Hulu has ordered the half-hour comedy series “Chad Powers” from Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, Variety has learned.
Powell will star in the series in addition to co-creating and co-writing the pilot with Waldron, with both serving as executive producers. The show is based on the Chad Powers character created by Eli Manning for his Epsn+ docuseries “Eli’s Places.” Manning wanted to learn more about the walk-on process for college football, so he donned a wig and prosthetic makeup so he could go undercover during the Penn State football tryouts.
The official description for the series states, “When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s (Powell) college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender has massive shoes to fill with its live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series, and the same is true for the actors tasked with bringing the show’s characters to life. Granted, the bar is likely close to the floor for live-action adaptations after M. Night Shyamalan’s infamous attempt in 2010, but nonetheless, fans expect a lot from whoever tries to adapt this story.

The Conners pays homage to Sara Gilbert's Simpsons cameo with a meta reference in Season 6, Episode 2. Darlene's desire for a Valentine to tear out their heart mirrors Gilbert's role as Bart's love interest in The Simpsons. This subtle nod to Gilbert's character in The Simpsons adds a touch of meta humor to the typically grounded Conners sitcom.
It has been a long time since one star of The Conners had a cameo in a long-running animated sitcom, but the Roseanne spinoff clearly remembers this iconic appearance. During Roseanne's peak, the show was one of the most popular sitcoms on network television. However, even this working-class family sitcom struggled to match the global success of The Simpsons. The Simpsons was a pop culture juggernaut throughout the ‘90s, reshaping the landscape of television comedy, inspiring imitators as famous as South Park and Family Guy, and shifting millions of tons of merchandise.

The beloved procedural crime show "Bones" ran for an impressive 12 seasons, continuing the upward TV star trajectory for David Boreanaz after his work on shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," and helping to launch Emily Deschanel to become a household name after a slew of small roles in a handful of TV shows and movies.
As the co-stars of "Bones," Deschanel and Boreanaz naturally appeared in every single episode of the series. And while viewers know guest stars didn't pop up nearly as frequently, some casual watchers may think that some of the more familiar faces might have at least popped up one time per season. But as it turns out, out of all of the guest stars who graced the series from 2005-2017, only one performer managed to make at least one appearance across all 12 seasons: Patricia Belcher, who played Caroline Julian, a federal prosecutor for the U.

TV shows sometimes switch up their art styles for special episodes, giving viewers a refreshing change in visuals and animation. Popular shows like Bob's Burgers and Community have experimented with different art styles, showcasing the power of collaboration and fan influence. Changing art styles can provide deeper insights into characters, like in Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas episode of Community, and can enhance storytelling through unique visual experiences.
While TV shows tend to find their format and stick with it, there have been some brilliant episodes that see a show switch up their visual styles, resulting in one brilliant episode. Each TV show will have its respective art style, whether this is done through the design of its characters and scenes in animation or cinematography and direction in live-action shows. It's easy to get used to a TV show looking one particular way, so it's always fun when one episode takes a different artistic direction.

Though it’s based on a 2005 movie of the same name, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith is something that’s increasingly rare these days: an honest-to-goodness TV show. The Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane-created spy thriller understands the required rhythms of its medium very well. Each episode presents a self-contained chapter within the dangerous marriage of John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) while also subtly forwarding their overall story.
The commitment to the usual TV format also means that Mr. and Mrs. Smith gets to introduce one hell of a roster of guest stars. Save for its finale, every episode of this show features at least one stupendously talented and famous guest star. If you’re wondering who each of these guest stars are or where you’ve previously seen them: don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. What follows is a list of the Mr. and Mrs. Smith cast,...

Although the 21st century has seen the emergence of many iconic sitcoms, few shows have earned as passionate of a following as Community. While a college-set comedy series about a group of unlikely friends didn’t necessarily seem like an original premise, Community often pushed the boundaries of the medium with its clever pop culture references, running gags, and subversive story structure. While the genius of the show’s writing is largely responsible for the series’ success, Community would be nothing without its ensemble; unfortunately, the series took a serious dip in quality when some of its longest-running cast members decided to depart the show to work on other projects. While removing a critical member of an ensemble could be an award moment for any show, Community gave Donald Glover the perfect sendoff with the episode “Geothermal Escapism.”...

The Community feature film is finally moving forward, and cast member Donald Glover says the script is complete.
For quite a few years now, there hav been talks of a film adaptation of cult American sitcom Community, which ran for 110 episodes over six seasons between 2009 and 2015. It pays off a meta joke originated by film buff Abed in an early season when he is obsessed with a superhero show. When Jeff criticises it and says it’ll be cancelled after a few weeks, Abed boldly exclaims “six seasons and a movie!”
That, as Community fans well know, then became something of a mantra going forward.
