Why does every episode need a song?
mmdzphrm4 August 2022
Overall, I like the message of this episode, genuinely, I do. But the songs, again with the songs. In the early days songs were rare, which made them special.

A few seasons back, the Simpsons fell into a rut where every episode had a song, and not a good one. For a minute there, I felt we were out if it, but once again were in this loop where every episode has /at least/ one song, usually more. They're not well done at all. They drag me out of the episode and are just a deluge of cringe and unpleasantness. Especially now that Julie Kavner's voice has been so shot that it prevents her from singing, which means they have to get a voice double for her songs and only hers, it's just painful. I want the Simpsons to continue ad infinitum, I want to reach a thousand episodes, to revive itself, to get the zeitgeist again and renew its spark. Give voice actors like Kavner a break, start working on finding people to take over once the actor can't perform any more. I'm sure there are plenty of people who can do the voices by now, ease them in, give Kavner a week off and have her understudy do the voice. Regardless, the singing, every episode with the singing and the songing, that's not the way to keep the show alive and will probably kill it faster than one of the main stars dying.

The Simpsons season 33 start is great
User648282825 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The start of season 33 are on a roll like that other guy said and this is another good one not the best (second worse in the season so far but still a really good episode) the riot river scenes are hilarious and the two plots are interesting and we get good Marge/Lisa scenes.

Not everything modern is bad
stedutomichele28 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best modern Simpsons episodes because... Well it acts like the old "golden age" episodes. In fact, it deals with a very common problem and, above all, one that is faced a lot by young people today: physical appearance, which must necessarily be perfect according to many young people today, and the will to change. The ending is also well done, showing us how everyone can be influenced by a simple word and that its weight on us continues even after many years. Despite its good writing, however, the episode shows obvious flaws: 1 I appreciated that Patty and Selma helped Lisa feel better, but the song could have been avoided; 2 I saw the part of the episode dedicated to Bart more as a way to give the episode the normal duration of about twenty minutes. I consider it a wasted opportunity because they could have used it to talk about other tough issues concerning modern kids, such as, for example, bullying or internal insecurity; 3 seeing Marge's word crash into Lisa's mind, inhabited by colored mini Lisas is something too cartoonish. In any case, this episode manages to give a good vision, as well as making us understand that The Simpsons are still capable of providing touching, satisfying and realistic moments.

Lisa's Belly
studioAT24 September 2023
I thought this was a really nice Lisa and Marge heavy episode, and while Julie Kavner's voice seems to have gone as Marge, it's still a good example of the show still being able to produce magical moments and episodes.

From a simple premise, this grows into being something rather sweet and tender, and they don't just go for the low hanging fruit jokes when they do come along to punctuate the heartfelt tone either, which makes a nice change.

We often think of it being Homer and Lisa stories that go down this route, but perhaps this is a pairing instead the show should consider, because it works well here.

Simpsons are on a roll
j-libran25 October 2021
The Simpsons are on a roll this season and I'm all for it. This particular story adds a new angle to the Marge/Lisa dynamic that's never been explored before: how the words of parents can affect the way children view themselves. I would even go as far as to say that this storyline feels like something they would have done some 30 years ago. It's THAT effective.

This hit me hard
sammyemmy426 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Ever since I was a little girl my dad constantly fat shamed me. Even when I was at a weight normal for my age, he used my anorexic brothers as a frame of reference. It's because of him I have never been in a real relationship, as I am terrified of getting the same look of disugust I got from my dad from someone I am romantically interested in. This episode showed how a parents words, no matter how well intended, can destory their childs self confidence and drastically impact their future. Although I find it kind of messed up that it was Marge who said those things and Homer, who is supposed to not have a clue, understand the weight of the words. And the fact that marge apologised for calling Lisa "Chunky" by saying that soon she will be "back to normal" and "Perfect" again shows that she really doesnt have a clue. But still, I appreciate the Simpsons writers for getting this message out to parents everywhere, so they can hopefully understand how their words may hurt their children.

ahhhhhhhhhh

The scenes at the water park were mostly good. It was pretty fun.

Once we got onto the main plot with Lisa then I just wanted to stop watching. I feel like this has something to do with the whole body positivity movement thing. Just dumb and it makes Lisa an even worse character than she already is.

The Bart Side plot started out well. I thought it was fun, but towards the end that crumbled to bits as well.

It seems to me that Jerkass homer is almost completely dead. He was a little bit dumber than usual in this episode, but not terribly overdone.

I only noticed Dr. Hibberts new voice actor this episode too.

No. Just no. It feels wrong. I'm not gonna get used to it. Either get rid of Dr. Hibbert, or stop being woke.

Wow. And ouch.
thechickapedia27 October 2021
This episode made me cry. It's so well done, and casts light on an issue many women have faced in their lives. And to show it starting so young is amazing. To those that complained this episode wasn't "funny enough", not every sitcom is minute-by-minute laughs. They have serious episodes too.

almost no laughs
riverotter6827 October 2021
After the water park scene, there were no laughs. The Marge/Lisa story arc was not even comedy; it was more like a script from an old ABC Afterschool Special.

Bart's story arc was also devoid of laughs.

not funny
otter6825 October 2021
Other than some of the scenes from the water park, this episode was rather unfunny. The Marge/Lisa story arc was completely devoid of humor and was almost like a cartoon after school special: more drama than comedy.

Bart's story arc had no laughs either.

serous tones, a few laughs all around great episode
bensyani21 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Im going to go right out and say this episode was amazing, it only had a few laughs but given the serous undertones of the episode i feel that having the amount of laughs was a good decision. There was no "jerk ass homer", which is always a plus, and the episodes overall tone was refreshing after so many years of total garbage.

The message is one that's echoed in many places but I feel its done amazingly.

The episode starts with homer excitedly bringing his kids and marge to a water park eventually going on an old dangerous, discontinued ride where they get sick and need steroids which has the side effect of gaining weight which makes lisa feel bad in regards to her body because marge makes a comment without trying to make her feel bad. Through out the episode people try to cheer her up but your gona have to watch to find out.

A fantastic episode
seansabry25 February 2022
This is one of the best Simpson episodes I have seen in a while. It feels like it belongs in the simpsons from 20 years ago when the show had noticeably more heart.

Happy to see it. It's an important episode.

I'm "not kidding around", this episode is good.
nathanielkalatsky16 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I looooooovvvveeee this episode. It is great from start to finish especially the beginning, but first the negative so we can end on a high note. This episode felt preachy, VERY PREACHY, it was pretty much a 22 minute lesson on appreciating yourself, which is fine, but i'm here to laugh. I do however appreciate the words as someone who has dealt with insecurities about my own immense chunkiness, which I am okay with now, but also no longer chunky. What really makes this episode shine, however, is the water park scene at the beginning. It is in my opinion the best Simpsons scene, superior to any in the episode Homer's Enemy. It was so funny, I was laughing immensely. I'll let you watch it yourself, however, essentially Homer told marge "That's the problem with you, your always kidding around." For me this joke makes up for years of unfunny simpsons and helps to lighten a very emotional episode. Writing Reviews is my passion.

incredible episode filled with one laugh
samkalatsky16 May 2023
Everyone is mentioning how good the water park scene is and let me tell you why, It had the first joke in Simpsons history that made me laugh 4 minutes straight. It sounds like I am faking it but I promise I am not I laughed to the point of tears coming out of my eyes. The joke was Homer didn't know the name of his childhood water park got changed and Marge told him I told you earlier that they changed it and in a really funny way Homer said that's the problem with you Marge your always kidding around. It is so funny you need to watch the clip to understand it and it is at the very start of the episode. Either I was really over tired or the joke is just hilarious, Give my review a thumbs up if you think the joke is hilarious. I praise this scene as the best Simpsons scene and really carried the terrible plot of the episode to make it good.
