- On the Midsomer Golfclub Whiteoaks a member is killed with a golfclub. In the course of the investigation they discover Whiteoaks to be full of hatred, gambling, violence, jealousy and extortion.
- Bullying snob Alistair Kingslake is killed with a golf iron at the Whiteoaks golf club. After another member, Miles Tully, tells Barnaby about illegal gambling among players, another member, who has had an 'odd phone call' is also slain. A figure in a blue tracksuit is seen at both murders. In fact there have been unreported assaults on members over the months. Barnaby discovers that the gambling is rife and the social-climbing steward , Mrs. Fountain, and her two warring sons are lending money to the gamblers and assaulting them if they fail to pay. Indeed Mrs. Fountain's scheming has driven the killer to commit the Dogleg Murders.—don @ minifie-1
- DCI Barnaby and DS Jones investigate the murder of a golfer at the local Whiteoaks golf club. Alistair Kingslake was found in the woods just off the 13th green apparently clubbed to death with a 1 iron. Kingslake was not a very likable fellow, rude and obnoxious with everyone whether they be fellow club members or so-called village members who are allowed to play on the course one morning per week. The 13th hole is known as Crisp's Folly, a particularly difficult hole with a 90 degree dogleg that is also known as the hole where many years ago the club secretary's grandfather lost his house in a bet. There is also a public path across that fairway that has raised hackles in the past. On this particular day, Kingslake had been goading a member of his foursome, Jerry Drinkwater, into making particularly large bets and it was Drinkwater who went into the woods and found him dead. After a second member of the foursome is subsequently found dead in the same woods Barnaby takes a greater interest in the amount of gambling at the club and particularly the principal moneylender. In the end, the crime is solved when Barnaby determines what the dead men had in common.—garykmcd
- Obnoxious businessman Alistair Kingslake was beaten to death with golf clubs, lured offside the course at the exclusive Whiteoaks golf club by his cheating wager opponent in dire financial straits Jerry Drinkwater. It's managed by widow Eileen Fountain, with burly simpleton firstborn Colin as groundskeeper and smarter junior son Darren as barman and assistant golf instructor, finally on the list of candidate members requiring a anonymous vote. A shadow in blue tracksuit was seen fleeing from the site, again at a second socialite member's murder, also around the legendary 13th hole, a near-impossible dogleg nicknamed Crisp's Folly after a lost bet for a house. The posh members look down upon the handful of unsympathetic, boorish 'village members' who are relegated to a tacky shed-like bar. Colin aspires in vain to conquer Will Tunstall's daughter Becky, who only has eyes for the instructors. Barnaby, whose wife insists to drag him to a sports club 'for his health', and Jones discover several posh members are actually in debt, crucially open to blackmail.—KGF Vissers
