A good, dark spy historical!
RebeccasList22 July 2022
What can I say? This drama gave me the gravity I needed to see in a production from China. I haven't seen anything like it: the actors, the narrative, the ending and everything between! I haven't been able to move on. Chen Kun and Bai Yu did a great job as leads, and the supporting cast is just as good. There are also several sword fights which had me at the edge of my seat (I kneel before Chen Gong and a certain cult leader. It was absolutely gripping!)

Based on the Three Kingdoms era of ancient China, there is a lot of information coming at viewers at the beginning but hang in there. This is a show that is filled with schemes and planning so there's much dialogue in dim rooms, but it's the details that count to make this incredible. No scene is to be skipped friends. None. I've watched it at least four times already and I get something new everytime.

It's a solid 8/10 stars from me!

The best Spy series I ever watched in my life
jeilinim11 December 2022
I've been a voyager of the spy or detective movies and tv series, but I have never watch something as crazy as this one. The way the plot unfolds made my jaw dropped because I have never seen that coming. This is must watch for people who love detective or spy genre.

Even though I hate the part where one of the character made a mess of the whole thing, I still can tolerate it. After all this is a drama. Drama will always be dramatic and will never go the way we wanted it to be. The missing star was for the ending :)

Believe it or not, I made this account only to review this series because this is such an underrated series that deserves an award.

Must every Chinese period drama end in tragedy?
jackofalltale2 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Must every Chinese period drama end in tragedy? Same thing with The Rise of Phoenixes. Can't the viewer be rewarded with a happy ending for once? Nice plot and storytelling but, go easy with these melancholic endings, it's not fair.

Ok, rant over. Regardless of the preceding views, the actors are so immersed in the story that you can't help but walk their journey with them. Kudos for the acting and directing but, the CGI looks poor. Is it a budget issue? Overall, a 9 for me because of CGI, Xun Xu's overly righteous attitude 😡😡😡 and the sad ending.😔😔😔

Can't wait for another Chen Kun's work, he takes on his characters so well. The next one better have a happy ending.

THE WIND BLOWS FROM LONGXI: A Historical Spy-Thriller Drama
Jinxxa_Wolf6 June 2023
THE WIND BLOWS FROM LONGXI was some real next level greatness, in my opinion, though I am a fan of Spy Thrillers, Historical C-Dramas, as well as many members of the cast. The writing, including the story, subplots, characters, and dialogue were all top notch amazing! I'm not sure why this hasn't gotten more 10 star ratings. Cinematically this series was simply stunning to the eye. The writing made it an intellectual mental feast. The acting was incredibly brilliant and realistic.

Taking place in the Three Kingdoms Era (224 AD) (during the Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu contention), this spy thriller was a very unique series. Chen Gong (Chen Kun) as the Shu spy also known as "The White Emperor" and Feng Ying (Yuan Nie) as the director of Shu's Intelligence Beareau, as well as Xun Xu (Yu Bai) the Shu spy called in to fix things, after the spy channel in Wei was infiltrated by Wei counter-intelligence. The mysterious Wei spy is called Candle Dragon and everyone seeks to find his identity. And what an intriguing, thrilling ride it was.

I highly applaud the acting, as everyone was excellent, but especially parts played by the masterful Chen Kun (Chen Gong / White Emperor), Yuan Nie (Feng Ying / Shu Intel Director), Yu Bai (Xun Xu), Yi Sun (Di Yue), Angelababy (Miss Liu / Liu Ying), Zhusheng Yin (General Lin Yan), Guangjie Li (Prime Minister Zhuge Liang), and Xiaochen Zhang (Libationer Huang Yu). There are so many others as well. The cast was superb!

This series really became immersive after the first few slower episodes, meant to set the stage for the highly complex strategical story. Through the course of the series, the mystery gradually unravels and the tension builds, leading to an intense outcome. This series was excellently casted and acted. The characters are really well written and motivated. The story was super intriguing, although it may prove a little more slow burn for those uninterested in a historical spy story. After watching this one, I found myself longing for more. The mere 24 episodes this series consists of is quite short for a Chinese Drama, especially one with such epic premise. Normally a Chinese historical epic might be 80+ episodes. I hope we'll get a season 2, quickly!

Overall, this was a fantastic watch. Excellent writing, direction, and acting, and stellar cinematography as well! It made it that much more appealing. This complex series was seriously worth the watch and hopefully there will be more coming. A must watch if you are a fan of C-Drama's, Historical Spy Thrillers, and the Three Kingdoms Era. It was a highly enjoyable series. Hope to see more. Brilliant!

One of the best spy story I have watched
earnienew6 October 2022
The dark, drama, complicated story is all what I need for spy series. All plots and the reason behind are reasonable. Every character are well developed and their actions to the events and plots are matched their personality, no confliction. The results of each scheme are in natural ending.

The only down side is the temple of the story line in the first 3 episodes are slow. Pppl who is no into spy drama might give up at the point, sort of similar with the early episode of game of throne. However. Once you into it, whole 24 episodes might still be not enough to you. Looking forward the second season if there is.
