They’ve done alphabetical. They’ve tried chronological. And now, for Turner Classic Movie‘s 30th celebration of Academy Award-winning and nominated films, the classic movie network is going categorical for 31 Days of Oscar 2024. Over one month (starting February 9), fans get to savor 348 of Hollywood’s finest dramas, comedies, musicals, and documentaries, grouped into one of 19 Oscar categories. Daytime offers a mix of winners and nominees; nighttime, it’s winners only, starting with costume design honorees. Day 1 kicks off with Errol Flynn’s Adventures of Don Juan (6am/5c), a 1948 release that had been delayed several years, in part due to a postwar clothing materials shortage. The swashbuckling flick would eventually require several thousand costumes, good enough to earn Oscar gold in the color film category. (Black-and-white titles got their own trophy until the awards were permanently combined in 1967.) Don Juan is followed by the 1957 nominee Raintree County (8am...

Taylor Swift is the odds-on favorite to make history with an Album of the Year victory for “Midnights.” It would be her fourth win in the category following victories for “Fearless,” “1989” and “Folklore.” That would set a new record for the most Album of the Year wins for any recording artist ever, breaking Swift’s tie with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. But she’s only tipped to win two other categories out of her six total nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album for “Midnights...

Maluma stopped by The Tonight Show to perform his vibe-laden single “Según Quién.” The musician gave a slick performance of the pop-norteño track, a collaboration with Carin Leon that was released in August, with the help of his band.
The Colombian musician later sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to chat about his recent album, Don Juan, which has garnered over a billion streams since its release this summer. He also discussed being a groomsman in Marc Anthony’s star-studded wedding and, of course, the TikTok trend for “Según Quién.

Emergency services were called to Brigitte Bardot’s Saint Tropez home on Wednesday after the iconic French actress and animal rights activist suffered breathing difficulties, according to French media reports.
News of her malaise sent French media outlets into overdrive amid fears for the well-being of the 88-year-old actress.
Her husband Bernard d’Ormale was later reported to have told local newspaper Var Martin that his wife’s breathing was back under control and she was feeling better.
“It was around 9 o’clock when Brigitte had trouble breathing. It was stronger that usual but she didn’t lose consciousness… the fireman came and gave her oxygen and then stayed to monitor her,” he said.
He suggested high temperatures in Saint Tropez as Southern Europe suffers a prolonged heatwave had been a contributing factor.

Jane Birkin graced the front pages of most French newspapers on Monday as France mourned the death of the late British actress and singer who enjoyed icon status in the country that she had called home since the late 1960s.
“Our tears can’t change anything,” proclaimed Le Parisien newspaper, which first broke the news of Birkin’s death at the age of 76 on Sunday.
Libération ran with the simple headline “Without Jane”, while regional newspaper Le Maine Libre referred to the late actress as “The Eternal English Bride of France”.
International obituaries have highlighted Birkin’s notorious performance with partner and late bad boy of French pop music Serge Gainsbourg on the 1968 pop song, ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, or the fact she inspired the Hermès Birkin bag.
For the French, she was much more.

Irène, the vibrant center of Sandrine Kiberlain’s impressive debut feature, is indeed radiant. Beaming with youth, she’s an 18-year-old aspiring actor, awakened to first love and to the vision of who she wants to be. Irène is also Jewish, living with her family in occupied Paris, and the awful paradox of her blossoming during the summer of ’42 while a hateful and murderous world is closing in is suggested by the movie’s original title, Une Jeune Fille Qui Va Bien: She’s “a young girl who’s doing just fine.” Her zest for life sustains her, and it’s also a dangerous kind of tunnel vision.
Played to awkward/graceful perfection by Rebecca Marder, in her first lead film role, Irène is almost always in exuberant motion, well captured by Guillaume Schiffman’s nimble, unobtrusive cinematography. When the camera lingers for a moment on her anklets and oxfords,...
