A plot that has a significance and a relevance in today's society. People are now talking more then ever about gender identity, fluidity, trans genderism etc, it's still pretty uncommon now, but hats off to Ruth Rendell for having the imagination to write this story way back in 1978.
I love how this episode plays out, it shows Baker at his absolute best as Wexford, he's battling his boss, his family, and trying to find a killer, as well as an identity. The explanation is well delivered, and the acting is of a very high standard. Staunton great in particular.
I must take issue with the character of Sheila though, feisty, unhappy, but all can be resolved with a dishwasher, I think not!
Loved it. 9/10
