Produces a real surprise.

Reg gets an unexpected call from someone who claims to have information, Mike continues to battle his demons, and his relationship with the missing child's mother becomes more complicated.

Ravenscroft is excellent here, it's one of his best performances, the character is very hard to like, he's so old fashioned, so puritanical in his thinking, but he's dependable and honest, and here we see a different side to him, his facade slips a little.

I'd have to say this is better than the first episode, which was good, but perhaps a little slower, this one is deeper, with the characters offering up a lot more.

Mike has been snappy and grumpy, hopefully he might deal with his grief a little better going forward.

Very good, 8/10.

Warning: Spoilers
I think this is the best of the series because Mike steps out of his usual grumpy and selfish self-righteousness and into an actual intimate relationship. Before, he didn't seem capable of intimacy -- every. And Reg is caught up in the unfinished business of an old case that may be tied to the new one. I watched it twice. I thought the plot flowed okay and could follow what was going on...until the end. Rendell often pulls a rabbit out of the hat to produce a solution, and here she did it again. I wish the ending had tied together more organically with the suspects that that had been produced so far, because I like to at least have some chance to solve the mystery. Not with this one. I understood what happened and why, after rewinding the last part, but to me the clues were insufficient. That was disappointing. Still, I enjoyed watching it.
