I want to preface this by saying I'm unfamiliar with most reality shows, and I know little about culinary arts, so you can take what I say with a grain of salt. However, I found this first episode to be a fun break from the world for an hour. The format of the show is unique and the contestants were likable.
My biggest criticism would be that it felt very staged, with forced laughter, and rehearsed talking heads, which, of course, it is staged (it's tv after all). But I hope the host, chefs, and contestants will become more natural as the show progresses.
Joel McHale is always a great host, his quick wit and timing helps the episode progress and offers some humor. The judges are likable, and I really like that they were honest without being harsh. Overall, a good start. I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes!
