“No job. No boss. Just fun.” That was the offer the Fifteenth Doctor made to Ruby Sunday in the Doctor Who series 14 trailer. ‘And’, he should probably have added, ‘quite a lot of mortal peril,’ – but when has the Doctor ever been upfront with companions about the not-insignificant dangers of travelling in time and space? He probably doesn’t even fill in a risk assessment.

“Talk to Me,” the creepy hit horror film directed by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou’s picked up five Aacta Industry Awards on Thursday.
Their prizes included best screenplay and best editing in film. “The New Boy,” which premiered in Cannes last year, collected two Aacta Industry awards for best cinematography and best design in film.
“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” “Deadloch” and “The Australian Wars” dominated the Aacta Industry awards’ television categories, with three prizes each.
The most nominated TV production of this year, “The Newsreader,” scooped the best direction in drama or comedy award.
Hit comedy “Colin From Accounts” and the recently renewed ABC drama series “Bay of Fires” came away empty-handed from the Aacta Industry Awards which focus on excellence in screen craft across film, television, documentary, short film, and digital production.
But some will have further chances on Saturday with another round of prizes in the main Aacta Awards.

The highest-ranked TV shows of 2023 on the popular review site RottenTomatoes.com span multiple genres. Not surprisingly, there are two crime shows with this distinction, both fronted by formidable female cops. The final season of the gripping Happy Valley (AMC+) centers on British Sgt. Catherine Cawood (a powerful Sarah Lancashire), while dark comedy Deadloch (Prime Video) shows bickering partners solving murders in a quirky Tasmanian town. Then there’s a trio of coming-of-age stories: The irresistible Reservation Dogs (Hulu) depicts the blossoming of four Native American teens on an Oklahoma reservation; Primo (Freevee) is about ambitious Mexican American teen Rafa (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his unique family; and comedy The Other Two (Max) shows the struggle of millennial sibs (Heléne Yorke and Drew Tarver) when their baby brother (Case Walker) attains overnight fame. The only sci-fi winner: Foundation (Apple TV+), based on Isaac Asimov’s iconic trilogy about warring empires. Tasty...

Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

Australian entertainment is having a moment. “Bluey” has become a favorite of children and parents around the world and has even led to American kids speaking with Australian accents. “Neighbors,” the long-running Australian soap opera that helped launch the careers of stars like Russell Crowe, Kylie Minogue, and Chris Hemsworth, was given a second chance after being picked up by Amazon Freevee. And three new Australian series have reached 10 times the demand for the average series in the U.S. since May.
Leading the pack is Amazon Prime Video’s “Deadloch,” which premiered in June. “The Clearing,” a Disney+ original thriller available on Hulu in the U.S., was released around the same time as “Deadloch” and had similar demand. Since Aug. 5, “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” another Prime Video original, has had higher demand in the U.S. than any other Australian series released this year.

Previously in Deadloch episodes, a series of murders took place, prompting the lead investigator, Dulcie Collins, to suspect a connection between the murders due to the similar pattern of the killings. Detective Eddie Redcliffe from Darwin joined the investigation, but she wasn’t much of a help due to her propensity to jump to conclusions without any strong evidence. Eddie admitted that she wanted to solve this case as soon as possible and get back to Darwin to earn appreciation from her colleagues, who considered her a failure and a horrible investigating partner. However, toxicology reports of the dead bodies revealed the presence of pentobarbital in their blood, leading Dulcie to come to the conclusion that the killer must be a woman. But why was she so sure about that? Let’s find out what additional evidence she would gather to confirm her suspicion.

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

Amazon’s Prime Video platform will broadcast the Australian Swimming Championships, in Adelaide next month, as part of a two-year deal with Swimming Australia. The company will use a roster of celebrity commentators to give a high profile to its continuing foray into the sports sector.
The deal with Swimming Australia is the first partnership Amazon has had in Australia for sports, other than sports documentaries.
The streaming giant has a patchwork of sportscasting in other territories – in India, for example it currently has a mixture women’s basketball and some cricket, having previously carried major tennis tournaments and English soccer. It finds itself in competition with incumbent free-tv channels, pay-tv operators for which live sports is a lifeblood, and a growing number of specialist sports streamers.
