Spartacus remains bloodied and bruised throughout the duration of the episode, as he is made to fight multiple rounds each night. The "bloody eye" makeup effect was achieved with special contact lenses. (That made it appear that he had popped some blood vessels in his eye.)
When Ovidius approaches Batiatus in the pits to discuss payment of debt, he says that Batiatus' excuses were, "...words spewed by Janus; FROM BOTH SIDES OF HIS FACE!!" In Roman mythology, Janus was a two-faced god of doorways and transitions whose duel faces looked in opposite directions. Using the name Janus when referring to a person was a way of describing someone as deceitful.
The actor who portrays Ixion is Raicho Vasilev. The voice for Ixion was done by Campbell Cooley.
The second fighter that Spartacus faces in the Pits, was portrayed by stunt actor Joshua Randall; who also portrays Glaber's mercenary Iovis.
