A not too unstable season opener
TheLittleSongbird9 May 2022
Seasons 1-6 were very impressive on the whole, some episodes disappointed but all had a high number of truly wonderful episodes (Season 6 particularly). Seasons 7-9 were more up and down, with some real winners but also some real misfires as well. Season 10 disappointed me, sure some fine episodes but too many average at best episodes (including one of 'Law and Order: Special Victims Unit's' worst season finales). Was really hoping that "Unstable" would certainly be better than that episode.

The good news is that it is, very much a big improvement. It is not perfect or one of the best 'Special Victims Unit' episodes or one of its best season openers, but after being so underwhelmed by "Zebras" it was great to see a step in the right direction. There is a lot to admire, with some strong character writing and the new addition fares better than most previous additions. "Unstable" did though have something that didn't sit right with me or with others.

Am going to start with the good things about "Unstable". The production values are slick and professional, not ever resorting to cheap or untested gimmicks or anything. The music is haunting in the right places and isn't constant or too loud, and the direction gives the drama urgency and breathing space. The script is tight and intelligent, it explores some tackling themes and explores them quite tactfully on the whole. The acting on the most part is very good, can't fault the regulars while Christine Lahti makes a promising first impression. The other standout is a chilling Mahershala Ali. The character chemistry was refreshing and the antagonism doesn't come over as forced.

Furthermore, the story is on the whole engrossing with plenty of twists and turns to keep one on their toes, that don't make the case come over as too over-complicated. It is quite complex, especially when the episode darkens and the side-plot kicks in, but not too much so. It is one of those cases too that is sad and anger-inducing throughout, where justice is rooted for. The character writing really intrigues, Tate is rootable and the perpetrator is one amoral sadist. Paxton shows a lot of potential here, can understand where people are coming from regarding her unnecessary meanness but while not always liking how she goes about it her point of view is understandable and agreed with. She also at least has personality and authority, unlike someone like Grayleck.

"Unstable" doesn't entirely work though. The worst thing is the ending, which is a slap in the face. Even for a dark case, it is far too out of place downbeat and revolves heavily around a legality that is actually extremely inaccurate to a not particularly tasteful degree. The show and franchise were no strangers to legal gaffes, but what is said by Paxton just came over as accuracy sacrificed for the sake of drama.

Count me in as one of those people that didn't care for Wentworth Miller here. For my tastes, his wannabe tough guy attitude came over as too affected and unintentionally campy, no intensity or grit here.

In conclusion, good if not great season opener. 7/10.

Felt Like Crap

That was a very unsatisfying and tragic ending. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a good episode. The writing was strong and the entire episode kept me at the edge of my seat. The new ADA is so mean. Did they cast her for several episodes to make us miss Cabot until she returned?

Very good 11th season opener

Warning: Spoilers
Without a doubt, the best written and performed of the three series in the L & O franchise, "SVU" jumps seems to get better and better as the years go by. The main cast, including stars Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni, know their characters down pat and could probably play them sans script.

The show is known for its inspired and notable guest stars and this installment is no different, with outstanding contributions from Wentworth Miller as a sort of "taken-to-the-extreme-younger-version-of-Elliot-Stabler" and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, the latter giving an Emmy-worthy performance as the conscience-less serial rapist Mark Foster.

It is implied that the SVU team may need the "talent's" of Miller's "Officer Nate Kendall" which should prove confrontational with Meloni's "Stabler".

If this first episode of the season is an indication of this year's quality, then "SVU" has another memorable notch on its belt.

Strong writing and performances. Ending a bit too dark.

Solid start for a season. We are treated to a new DA, who nitpicks everything the detectives do because she doesn't want to see convictions overturned; an unbalanced cop who has to work with SVU this case, but who does not have the required sensitiveness; both the harm of letting a guilty man loose and of convicting an innocent man are shown. Wentworth Miller performance is fun because it is almost campy: he reminds me of the guy on the car insurance commercials asking if the company really saves you 15%. The perp, played by Maha... Mr Ali is as smug and detestable as can be. The "irony" in the end, however, is too much of a downer and probably left a lot of people less enthusiastic about seeing the series again. I thought it was a mistake. It is not badly written, it is just kind of depressing.

In the hothouse world of BLM this episode was a standout

Some great performances and writing here, as always. But even stronger was the underlying message and lens on of the justice system of law and order in the US.

This one for me was not just about the characters but what can be considered broken and "unstable" in the system and people effected by it. Rewatch it for those talking points. Several reviews discuss the dire ending, but can we deny that unfortunately it is what often plays in reality.

Wrong on many levels

I normally love this show. I'm sorry, but not this episode. The new people were upsetting and for the most part, mean. The ending simply sucked. This one left me very sad. Justice was not served here. Disappointing.

Nothing resolved with these unstable people
bkoganbing18 December 2012
Unstable is one accurate word for this SVU episode because looking at this cast of characters guesting here, just who is the unstable one?

While working another case a narcotics cop Wentworth Miller stumbles across a victim of a rape or more accurately Jennifer Ferrin runs across his crime scene in a disheveled state. He's got the people skills of Scrooge and and I'm betting she's not wrapped too tight when she's not a victim. But she bonds with him so much so that Dann Florek has to get him reassigned temporarily to SVU so Benson and Stabler can wrap the case. Miller has other issues as well, the scope of which we don't learn until the end.

Then there's Christine Lahti the ADA who brazens into the squad with an attitude and a half. She and Christopher Meloni have hate at first sight. All her issues come out in subsequent episodes.

Finally there's Mereshaz Ali who is arrested for the crime and when they finally get him to confess he turns out to be one very screwed up individual. And it turns out he's a serial rapist who Meloni years back may have put the wrong man in jail for his crimes.

One thing with this SVU episode it all isn't resolved neatly at the end by any means.

Will he never learn?

Warning: Spoilers
This is surely the second time that Stabler has promised an unjustly imprisoned man that he's getting out, only for the necessary witness to die before giving their evidence, leaving the poor guy stuck and let down in the pokey. I'm afraid I'm just waiting for the end of series 12, when we can get rid of this overbearing, self-righteous, violent, unstable (! stabler... gettit!), hypocritical character. He has some redeeming characteristics, but they seem all to be expended on his victims, leaving very little for his family. Getting his daughter Kathleen's offences to "go away" using his police influence was actually a let-down for her, as we saw over a couple of years, and how his wife Kathy (and Olivia) put up with it all is still a bit of a mystery. One of the big puzzles is how the scriptwriters were able to keep referring to his "Irish" heritage in various contexts, some having plot significance. The last time I checked the Irish phone directory, there were two (2 !) people in Ireland with the name "Stabler", one in Dublin, and one in Sligo. The Swiss telephone directory finds 82 subscribers with the name "Stäbler" (matching the usual pronunciation of his name in the series) or "Stabler" (as he sometimes says it himself). The Austrian telephone directory finds 14 entries, and 463 in the German directory. What roots do you think Stabler is likely to have?

The guests don't really work. Especially Wentworth Miller who is trying so hard to be tough it's embarrassing.

Ugh... Bad acting
midcitymax24 July 2021
I have to agree with the others - Wentworth Miller's acting attempt is comical - like something out of a silly tough guy movie. Distracting to the entire episode. Reminds me of the acting on the movie, "Airplane".

Bad Choice

I love this show but had to give one star to this episode solely because they cast wentworth miller. He's such a horrible actor - his tough guy attitude is cringeworthy.
