Really disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
I always thought I would never dislike an episode of Spongebob in my life. But after watching the promos and adverts, I got really excited for this movie. The promo included that Spongebob and Sandy were finally going to get married. It also said that the crabby patty formula was going to me revealed.

But after watching the episode, everything I was looking forward to went out the window. During the flashback with Spongebob learning the crabby patty formula, Plankton showed up and started to scribble a pen. During this Mr Krabs flicks Plankton off screen, then for no obvious explanation he vanished. The formula was not revealed and remains a secret.

The thing I was really looking forward to the most was the "wedding". The scene was just ending when a light fell onto the stage. After that happened, a fish yelled 'BOO!'. This was followed by Mr Krabs saying that this was the worst play ever. That really got me deep inside. The wedding was fake.

I have totally lost my trust in the writers of Spongebob. I think its time I write an episode. A good one.

This episode is the best

Warning: Spoilers
Why dose everyone hate this episode it so funny and it's one of my favorites. It's hilarious when mr Krabs said that's when Krabby patty's you to cost a dime it was a dark Time I still have night mares about it. And all the flash backs are great to like where Spongebob and mr Krabs travel to find a safe space to tell Spongebob the Krabby Patty formula and they go so far just to end up where they started. And I love the part with mr Krabs wallet that's like a dog and is dying for money and when he throws it out the hole to get the money cause it's driving him mad some one takes it. And the part that shows mr Krabs has cameras in everyone's house. It's such a great episode.

A disappointing mess
minutolo19 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When this originally came out, I was a young dude getting pumped to see a "very special episode" of SB. Back then, my dumb ass didn't know what bad was... until now.

To be fair, there are decent moments. Musical guest P!nk sings a funny song about attracting scurvy in a pirate-shanty and there's a random Robin Williams cameo. Other lazy attempts at cameos include Will Ferrell, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Tina Fey, and even Tom Kenny... the voice of our main character.

The promos and adverts claimed that Spongebob and Sandy were going to get married... that did not happen. It was a shotty attempt at a daydream of an alternate universe when the gang gets stuck in an air vent. Oh yeah, the Krusty Krew is stuck in an air vent.

This whole special was one big "ratings trap" and it worked on so many gullible kids who legitimately thought that there was gonna be a wedding between a sponge and a squirrel.

Flawed, but Interesting
BadnikCritic12 January 2022
The celeb segments, I thought they were funny. Like Patchy not knowing who Tom Kenny is. Overall, I like Truth or Square quite a bit. But I do think that Big Birthday Blowout does a better job celebrating a Spongebob anniversary. Truth or Square does celebrate the anniversary in a pretty strange way, through the Spongebob gang being trapped in the vents of the Krusty Krab and a fake clip show and cutaways. I think the jokes are still funny. I think a lot of the cutaways/clips are pretty interesting and creative in their style/premise. I like the premise of the characters being trapped in the ventilation system too. I think this special's structure is somewhat messy and doesn't have the clearest focus, but I still find it entertaining and somewhat creative. This special is hated by many, but I like it even with its flaws.

Obnoxious to say the least
lukebees1 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't seen this episode in about nine years so it may be stressful for me to remember what I can about this failure. In this episode, there was this celebration at the Krusty Krab and it begins with Spongebob twirling around. Of all the things he does, he sticks these twirlers into Squidward's mouth to make him smile involuntarily and it just looks sick. Later in the episode, Spongebob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs and Squidward are in these vents and they have what appears to be a clip show. You have some flashbacks where Spongebob, not even born yet, is as obsessed and worshipping of the Krabby Patty as he is now, despite how old both things are. There are plenty of fake commercials for the old days of the Krusty Krab but the lack of quality just makes you really miss the old days when Spongebob Squarepants was really good. But now, the writing has sunk it neck deep under the ocean floor.

There are some more worse parts to talk about. While crawling through the vents, Patrick crawls behind Squidward and the former keeps breathing on the latter, apparently putting him in agony. Squidward also has some time to remember what it was like before Spongebob had moved in, when he lived a happy and peaceful life. Then, his garden gets crushed by a pineapple, a glutton with a rock moves next door, and he's been living under constant torture and annoyance for almost twenty years. While this special may not be completely hated and some quality episodes may have aired - may referring to the fact I haven't seen the series since, there is plenty to be said about it that tells you that Spongebob has seen better days. Despite that, this episode is nearly TEN years old! The kids who watched this my age when it ran are now in college or beyond! Today, Spongebob doesn't have to try at becoming a long continuous show the same way as Sesame Street if that means compromising the quality and having nothing new for the next generations.

A horribly disappointing 10th anniversary special
ooweegooweehead22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This hour length special is the younger brother of Atlantis SquarePantis, and it showed that the crew could still not put together a good TV movie, 2 years later. When it was announced and I was young, it sounded great. Now that I've rewatched it as an adult and know what bad episodes are, yeah...this sucks. I guess it's supposed to be a parody of a clip show, but as the 10th anniversary special, why not do something original?? The opening sequence is animated in a different style and sung by CeeLo Green, but the title card's music is not special at all and is just a generic track used repeatedly in the show. So already off to a 'meh' start. Yes, the continuity in SpongeBob does not really exist, but they could've had the gang go on a grand adventure. Instead, they get locked in the air vents (despite Mr. Krabs saying the vents were UNDERNEATH the restaurant at the beginning) and end up basically sitting around and barely interacting, while setting up boring Family Guy-style cutaways that are supposed to be funny, but end up just being boring filler. Once again, Plankton gets thrown in like in Atlantis SquarePantis for no reason. His whole sideplot of stealing the formula while everyone is trapped doesn't get really any screen time, and he ends up failing like always, so it didn't seem to have any purpose. Thankfully, there aren't many songs in this sung by the characters. And the flashbacks that they cut to are bland and uninspired. The whole marriage scene was made entirely to hype up the special and get people to watch, otherwise it had absolutely no point. And celebrating the 10th anniversary of SpongeBob, you'd think they would've used more characters. Sandy gets a cameo in the marriage scene, and a small appearance and voice role later on, but as a main character, you'd think she would've been more involved in the special. She could've come in to rescue the gang in an exciting scene, but instead they had to pull another 'Patrick is stupid' joke by destroying the walkie talkie that let them talk to her. And none of the side characters appear in the special (I'm not counting their appearances in the flashbacks, if any). Would it have been so hard to throw Mrs. Puff, Pearl, Larry the Lobster, or Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy in the crowds waiting for the Krusty Krab to open? If they weren't going to be involved, why not at least give them cameos in the 10th anniversary special?? Yeah, a couple appear in the wedding scene, but only for a few seconds. And lastly, the gang just crashes their way out of the vent, which they could've done from the beginning. Therefore, the entire reason for all these flashbacks and the special itself is utterly pointless, and makes the characters just look stupid for not doing anything sooner.

Now on to the Patchy stuff. He takes up a ridiculous chunk of the special doing nothing but calling celebrities. Unlike normal episodes and even Atlantis SquarePantis, Patchy gets a huge amount of screen time, maybe even a little more than the animated segments, which are the whole point of SpongeBob in the first place! And as for the celebrities...who are some of these people?? Why didn't they get celebrities or voice actors that kids would know? Are a majority of kids going to know who Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, Craig Ferguson or Tina Fey are? I had no idea who Triumph or Craig were, and barely knew anything about Tina Fey. Pink was the best celebrity they got. She sang a song, and it was actually decent. At least kids would probably know who Pink was, as she is a pop singer. Robin Williams (rest in peace) was also a great celebrity to get, except that they gave him barely anything to do. He's kidnapped by Patchy and then he escapes. That's it. I'm glad that he was included, because even without much to do Williams was able to make me laugh. For the most part, the celebrities they get to guest star aren't even in the same room as Patchy, and that is incredibly lazy.

In general, this special sucks. The only things to call back to the earlier episodes are featured at the beginning and end, and are just clips from Patchy segments, not actual episodes. The animated stuff is bland and boring, the clips they show are quick and also uninspired, and Patchy takes up way too much screen time, especially with the celebrities kids wouldn't know just popping in randomly despite having no purpose to do so. The only highlights in my opinion were Pink's presence and her song, and the brief presence of Robin Williams. Highlights in the SpongeBob segments? Nope, I can't think of any. This episode was just a dull money-grabbing scheme by Nickelodeon. Thank God that the 20th anniversary special in 2019 was amazing.

Painfully disorienting, the worst of the series
ceddy14 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode's advertising had me and my friends hyped when we were little. Coming back to it years later, this was not a good 10 year celebration for this show.

In fact, it's my least favorite episode of the entire series. People dislike other episodes for being mean-spirited, but at least those episodes have substance. I can find myself revisiting those episodes, but that's not the case for this one. This episode was a mess of plot holes, shoddy writing, and cruddy pacing. On top of that, none of the celebrity guests looked like they enjoyed being there.

Honestly, I think the whole episode was just an excuse to have SpongeBob and Sandy getting married in the promos.

There are a lot of good scenes in this special. The live-action scenes are amazing and the theme song was very great. There are many other reasons why this episode is the best.

Infamously Dissapointing and Pointless
damiontatum6 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is one boring derivative unfunny mess of a tv movie. It had a great concept and beautiful animation, but all of that was overshadowed by Bland Songs, Loads of Filler, and Unnecessary Celebrities, This Surprising, Cynical Tv Movie was nothing more than a cash grab.

What is this supposed to be
totaldramaicequn10 March 2024
Truth or Square is supposed to celebrate SpongeBob's 10th anniversary. It's supposed to highlight all the great moments from the show's first 10 years and celebrate it.

But instead, we get unnecessary flashbacks from adventures that weren't even from the previous episodes or shorts, sandbagging, and ridiculous concepts/parodies of the show that led me to change the channel!

Not even Patchy the Pirate could save this special from tanking. The only flashbacka I enjoyed was when Krabs broke the fourth wall and stopped Plankton from hearing the secret formula but why would SpongeBob even tell Plankton about it anyway? The montage showing Plankton getting launched back to the Chum Bucket was also funny. Especially that last one where he launched himself. And Pink's "We Got Scurvy" song was very memorable. But that's it.

This special needed less reminiscing on things the fans never saw and more on celebrating the anniversary.

The animated parts are great, but patchy is just the worst
troychrisrider21 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Patchy really weighs this down. They give him more screen time than he deserves. Having him at the beginning only, that would be a cute way to start the episode. But Patchy trying to get celebrities for the Spongebob fanclub is just painful to watch. But the animated parts I really like. At the end Spongebob sings a song "O Krusty Krab" being a parody of O Christmas Tree. The thing that really weighs down the animated segments is that there are just so many FLASHBACKS! Seriously, who even cares about Spongebob decorating or even walking around in a circle back to theKrusty Krab (That part was actually pretty funny). Overall, if you want a REAL celebration, just watch Birthday Blowout.
