The story was written after director David A. Roberts' friend passed away during the pandemic. When told he couldn't see his friend because of the quarantine, he was instead informed that they could have a video call the next day instead. Unfortunately his friend passed away before they got chance to talk. The story of Older Gods was written in Davids grief and guilt of not being able to talk to his friend before it was too late
and ultimately discover what people are willing to do to try and remove that weight of guilt.
