The Minions are going Marvel for Illumination‘s Despicable Me 4 by getting the Super Soldier treatment in a new trailer! It’s been roughly two years since Minions: The Rise of Gru, and younger generations are clamoring for more outlandish antics from Gru’s pill-shaped helpers with a penchant for madness. The new film introduces another addition to the chaotic-good family, with Gru and Lucy welcoming a son. He’s a mama’s boy through and through, but that won’t keep Gru from vying for his love and adoration.
Despicable Me 4 finds Steve Carell reprising his role as the reformed villain Gru. Throughout the Despicable Me series of films, Gru has left a life of villainy behind in favor of becoming a father, husband, and secret agent. Of course, Gru’s hapless yet helpful helpers, the Minions, will also return in the sequel. Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin,...

Bill Hader or, at least, an animated character that he voices, will don a red-and-white striped top hat in a new adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat.”
The “Barry” star will lead a vocal ensemble that also includes Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bowen Yang (“SNL”), Xochitl Gomez (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in The Shadows”) and Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”). Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises officially announced the casting on Monday.
“The Cat in the Hat” will open in theaters on March 6, 2026. Although the book is a children’s classic, it has a checkered cinematic legacy. A 2003 live-action adaptation, starring Mike Myers as he was riding high off of “Austin Powers,” collapsed at the box office. It earned $134 million on a $109 million budget and became a money-loser when marketing and distribution costs were factored into the equation. It...

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Shift: Joe Drake Stepping Down As Chair, Hands Reins To Adam Fogelson
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake is exiting the company, and handing over executive duties and title to Motion Picture Group Vice Chair Adam Fogelson.
This was a move initiated by Drake who’ll be working with Fogelson over the coming months to transition him to the Chair role.
The corporate segue follows Lionsgate’s reboot of the Hunger Games franchise with the Q4 holiday prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which has grossed over $340M global box office to date.
Drake rejoined Lionsgate in 2017 after having success with Good Universe Pictures, the second company acquired by Lionsgate from Drake. Other highlights during his current run of the Motion Picture Group include multi-award-winning Knives Out ($312M global B.O.), the last two John Wick movies ($766M+ global B.O.), and the latest installment in the Saw franchise ($111M global box). Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

Warner Bros. Discovery will open Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” not on March 15, 2024, but on March 1, 2024. That takes the place of Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” as the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action comedy recently moved to May 3, thus making it the unofficial summer kick-off film for 2024. Now the Timothée Chalamet/Zendaya sci-fi fantasy, which was initially set to debut Nov. 3 of this year, is the unofficial Spring season kick-off flick instead.

With Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour pulling in the big bucks this weekend, we wanted to know what movie featuring the singer/ songwriter/ actress/ football fan is your favorite? The interesting thing is that none of the movies with Swift in them have been critical hits. The Lorax represents the biggest critical hit at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes while The Giver represents her best live action effort at just 35%. We are keeping this poll strictly to her narrative movies and not any of her music related content so you will have to decide if her lovelorn cheerleader from Valentines Day was your favorite or her more adult turn in David O’Russel’s Amsterdam is more your cup of tea.

Superworld is set in an alternate world where everybody has powers, however, a supervillain has taken over. The one kid who lacks special abilities is the only person who’s able to steal the Super Stone that keeps the villain in control – but to do that, he must pull off the dangerous heist while rallying his hero friends in a war against the villains.
Superworld: Save Noah, on which the Paramount pic is based, was published by Random House Childrenn’s Books in November 2022. Their upcoming second book in the series, Superworld: Destructo World, will be published by the same label in early 2025.

The Diplomat ranked as No. 1 for the second week in a row with 66.46M viewing hours, which is up fairly significantly from its premiere week viewership.

Paramount+ decide to stream “Scream VI” 45 days after its theatrical launch. It’s parallel to its PVOD debut — but that means streaming takes priority.
PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes PVOD available for most films after three weekends, places titles on Peacock after 45 days. Warner Bros. Discovery offered “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” for PVOD after 21 days its theatrical debut, but Max will have to wait two months.
As a result, the PVOD debut for “Scream VI” is muted. Instead of a strong showing across the board, it is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently stands at #7 and #8 at the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted as high as #2 on iTunes but quickly fell, perhaps as streaming awareness increased.

Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.
No word yet when “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Air” (MGM), or most importantly “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) will make the leap. “Super Mario Bros.” might be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window established in 2020 by the just-ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). The Night Agent is still sneaking its way up Netflix‘s list of Most Popular TV.
The series racked up another 90.04M hours viewed for the week of April 10 to April 16, reigning over the week’s English-language series and soaring to No. 6 on the all-time list. With 605M hours viewed since release, The Night Agent took the place of Stranger Things 3, bumping it down the list along with Lucifer Season 5 and Season 1 of The Witcher.
There is still a few days left before the series’ 28-day measurement window ends, meaning it could easily climb into the Top 5. The No. 5 spot is currently held by Season 1 of Bridgerton with 625M hours viewed.
Second place on this week’s Top 10 went to another thriller: Beef. Word of mouth has certainly helped the series starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong more than double its audience from the previous week with 70.38M hours viewed.

It has to be tempting for Lionsgate’s ‘”John Wick: Chapter 4,” Amazon’s “Air,” and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to accelerate their PVOD releases: The home market is dying for something new to watch.
After 60 days in theaters, Disney released “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” today and it immediately went to #1 at iTunes; expect other charts to follow suit. For now, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) repeated as #1 at Vudu and Fandango for a third week, with recent releases “65” (Sony), “Creed III” (MGM), and “Shazam: The Way of Water” (Warner Bros. Discovery) rotating second through fourth spots on all three charts, all at $19.99. The only new title is “The Jesus Revolution” (Lionsgate), for sale at $19.99.
Lionsgate release windows follow no set pattern. “Jesus” had seven weekends in theaters before home release, but “John Wick 4” was offered for pre-sale to great success parallel to its March 24 theatrical debut.

None of the college basketball teams seeded in the top three made the NCAA final four — but if you think that’s an upset, Nintendo can do you one better.
Already the top film released so far this year, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) is en route to a seven-day total (Wednesday-Tuesday) of $245 million-$250 million. There’s nine months to go, and many more films to come from Marvel (“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3”) and DC (“The Flash”), as well as franchise titles from “Fast and Furious,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Indiana Jones,” a live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” and many more.
Even so: Two cartoon plumbers with vaguely Italian accents may be enough top them all. It could be the #1 domestic release for 2023.
Based on its doubling first week, $500 million is a sensible estimate. To be the year’s best, it would need at least $600 million — a total that doesn’t demand much optimism.

“65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.
“Shazam” sequel after 21 days is atypical for Wbd, especially for a DC title. After Wbd ended its disruptive same-day theatrical/HBO Max strategy, the studio said any theatrical...

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" adapts Nintendo's beloved video game franchise about the mustachioed Italian-American plumber who fights evil turtles as much as he does clogged toilets (if not more). This is the first film adaptation of the "Super Mario" games in 30 years, the last attempt being the infamous 1993 live-action film "Super Mario Bros."
That film took some nightmarish creative liberties with the character designs, using practical effects to try and recreate the denizens of the Mushroom Kingdom in live action. The 2023 film from Illumination Entertainment, however, uses CG animation. As a result, the ensemble — even the inhuman characters like Bowser (Jack Black) and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) — look more or less identical to their video game appearances. One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.
Watch the trailer for “Beef”:
More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. What should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.
Check out the trailer for “Florida Man”:
Also coming to Netflix in April will be the final chapter of “Firefly Lane.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Deliciously fanciful desserts are served up on new Prime Video cooking contest Dr. Seuss Baking Challenge, hosted by Tamera Mowry-Housley. Oh, the things that are made by the talented teams of pastry chefs and cake artists who make even green eggs and ham sound appealing. Each episode transports viewers to the make-believe City of Seuss as the participants take inspiration and put their culinary spin on timeless tales such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Lorax,” and “Horton Hears A Who.” Judges and baking bigwigs Clarice Lam and Joshua John Russell decide the best bites and narrow down the field of nine duos to one across multiple rounds. The winning “Seuss” chefs earn honorary citizenship, are inducted into City Hall’s Hall of Fame, and receive a key to the city and 50,000. Here Mowry-Housely, who also hosted last year’s Baker’s Dozen, takes...

We knew she was trouble when she walked in…and now Taylor Swift is about to walk onto the movie set, as she is set to make her directorial debut for Searchlight Pictures.
In a statement, Searchlight Presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield said, “Taylor is a once in a generation artist and storyteller. It is a genuine joy and privilege to collaborate with her as she embarks on this exciting and new creative journey.”
No details have been released on the project as far as plot or cast, meaning there’s a blank space in the announcement at this point. Taylor Swift has previously directed or co-directed more than a dozen of her own music videos.
Objectively, Taylor Swift’s cinematic output hasn’t exactly been impressive. Her first big screen appearance was in 2010’s romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, with another supporting role in 2014’s The Giver. She...

On October 28, 2019, Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano unleashed an animated musical pilot called "Hazbin Hotel" on YouTube, and the world has never been the same. The pilot, which was created entirely by freelance animators and almost exclusively financed by Medrano's Patreon followers, quickly went viral, with the episode currently boasting over 81 million views. The story follows Charlie Morningstar, princess of Hell, as she attempts the impossible task of rehabilitating demons so they can be accepted into Heaven. Her goal is to not only help curb Hell's current overpopulation issues and prevent the demons from being exterminated by angels in the process, but allow an outlet for the damned to seek redemption. Charlie opens up the titular Hazbin Hotel, which serves as a fancy rehab resort for the demons, and becomes a safe space for demons to find a way to become better people in the afterlife than they were on earth.

Preparing for an upcoming flight isn’t just limited to packing your clothes and toiletries — have you thought about how you’re going to keep yourself entertained? The idealist in all of us might say we’re gonna read that book we’ve been putting off, but depending on the length of your flight, that may be easier said than done. If it’s on the longer side, it can be easy to get distracted and start to really feel the minutes crawling by.

Following the commercial success of 2008’s ‘Twilight’, ‘The Twilight Saga’s New Moon’ became one of the highly-anticipated movies in 2009. Director Chris Weitz has revealed that the Grammy Award-winning artiste Taylor Swift wanted to become a part of “New Moon”, but he shot her down.

Turns out, Taylor Swift could've made her big-screen debut before she starred in 2010's "Valentine's Day." According to "Twilight: New Moon" director Chris Weitz, the pop star would've added the sequel to her acting résumé had he not passed on her agent's request for her to appear in the film.
"Taylor Swift and I had the same agent at the time, and he said, 'Taylor would like to be in this movie - not because of you, but because she's a Twihard. She will be someone at the cafeteria, or the diner or whatever. But she just wants to be in this movie,'" Weitz recalled during an episode of the "The Twilight Effect" podcast hosted by Melanie Howe and franchise alum Ashley Greene.

And grateful for my champions at MarVista, who took this from script to screen. Our dream was to watch a laugh-out-loud comedy film and I cannot wait to share what we have made with audiences as soon as possible! Also, I love my lawyer. She’s great.”
“Paper Kite is thrilled to help support the hilarious Chelsea Peretti and her deeply unique and funny film. We also have loved working with MarVista and are grateful they helped make this all happen,” adds Poehler.
“Hiring ‘first time female directors’ has been a core focus of mine throughout my career,” said Hannah Pillemer, EVP of Creative at MarVista Entertainment. “The chance to support a comedic visionary like Chelsea is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we are honored she chose MarVista to go on this journey with her. Our entire team is thrilled to partner with Paper Kite, and we cannot wait for the world to see this unique and distinctively hilarious film!”

Taylor Swift will release her new song, “Carolina,” a theme for the film “Where the Crawdads Sing,” tonight, she revealed on her social media this morning.
The song, which plays over the movie’s end credits, arrives three weeks in advance of the release of “Where the Crawdads Sing,” due in theaters July 15.
The coming drop was revealed in an image on the artist’s Instagram Story. She didn’t include any additional text about the tune, although it’s likely she would have more to say when the song arrives tonight.
It marks the first freshly penned song Swift has issued since her “Evermore” album in late 2020, although the artist has put out remakes and previously unheard bonus tracks from her series of re-recorded catalog albums in the interim.

Ten years ago, Disney’s “John Carter” opened nationwide.
Meant to be a potential franchise-starting blockbuster, it was savaged by critics, who called the film “wanly plodding and routine” (Entertainment Weekly), and “a giant, suffocating doughy feast of boredom” (The Guardian), and was met with indifference by general audiences, who simply didn’t show up..
Quickly, the movie and its fate took on a nearly mythical dimension – it wasn’t just a box office disappointment, it was a staggering creative and commercial failure, the kind of movie that is often mentioned in the same breath as other high-profile misfires like “Ishtar” or “Waterworld.”
But the actual story of “John Carter” – how it was conceived, what happened during production, and how it all fell apart thanks largely to a misguided marketing campaign – is much more complex and much more interesting.
Most Hollywood bombs are perceivable early on, through a toxic combination of untested filmmakers,...
