Is something burning? No, that's just the fog...
Chalice_Of_Evil29 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Either that or somebody's taking one too many hot steaming baths in their outdoor jacuzzi.

Stop me if you've heard this before. A couple of 20-somethings driving down a creepy road at night. They hit someone in the middle of the road, the boyfriend goes to check if the person's alive and winds up dumped on the hood of his car, complete with gaping neck wound. Girlfriend screams her fool head off and makes a run for it, only to be lifted up off the ground by her unseen attacker. Cue the title card (is that sparkling I see?). Anyway, after all this, we hear the voice of one Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley - who I recognised from Smallville, Cane and 24) narrating for us that, despite knowing the risk, and knowing that he shouldn't of come back, he *did* because he just *has* to know "her". The "her" he speaks of is Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who is a dead ringer for this Katherine person (who Stefan has a picture of, from 1864, inside one of his many vampire diaries - hence the show's title - that he keeps). Elena narrates, whilst writing in her diary as well. In case you didn't know...her parents died in a car crash. Despite this, she is determined to act all happy and make this year "different". Damnit, now I'M the one narrating! This show is based on a series of books, apparently. Things have been changed (which has made a number of readers unhappy, it seems). I myself have never read them, but I decided to check out this show for the hell of it, just to see what it was like. While it does have more than a few flaws, I actually didn't mind this first episode.

Let's start with the positives: The three lead actors are easily the best of the cast. Although I haven't seen Nina Dobrev in anything before this, she seemed to be one of the better actors in this show. She seemed very comfortable, playing Elena, which made her performance convincing. She acts pretty normal, isn't *too* sullen/mopey, and is actually quite likable. I found her saying hi to a crow amusing, along with her reference to the Hitchcock film, The Birds. Meanwhile, Paul Wesley surprised me by being able to convincingly portray a relatively "good" guy (or "good vampire", technically). I personally would have thought him more suited to playing a villain - but I'm sure he's played enough of those previously. In a bit of a twist, the "bad" brother (Damon) is played by Ian Somerhalder (also from Smallvile, but probably best remembered as Boone from Lost) - while it's not Zombie Boone, like we'd all hoped for...it's close enough. Somerhalder is someone I wouldn't have expected to see playing the "villain" of the piece...but he does a decent job (if a little bit over-the-top some of the time. His mocking/imitation of Stefan's vamp face (and the sound he makes) was hilarious, though.

Dobrev and Wesley are really good in their scenes together, as are Wesley and Somerhalder (have yet to see how Dobrev and Somerhalder interact, though). These three actors were the main thing I liked about this 'Pilot' episode. I also liked the way the episode was filmed. Mystic Falls is certainly a foggy town (especially the cemetery). Seriously, there's a LOT of fog in this show. It just comes rolling in, out of nowhere (although there *is* kind of a vague explanation for this towards the end). The fog machine must've been in overdrive. Everything's very moody/creepy. It might seem a bit "cheesy" or "campy", but, darn it, I actually liked it! It's all about the mood - and this show sets up an unsettling, old style horror movie type feel quite well.

Now for the negatives: Pretty much the rest of the cast all kind of blend together. It's easy to get them confused with one another, and none of them are particularly memorable/likable. The guys are annoying, mopey, stoner jerks, while the girls are slutty, annoying and bitchy (except for Elena's friend, Bonnie, who may or may not actually be psychic. She's not so bad). At least Elena's Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) seems pretty laid-back/quite cool. Then there's Stefan's "Uncle Zach" (Chris William Martin - who I'll always remember from Season 2 of Felicity). In actual fact, Zach refers to Stefan as "uncle" (Zach being Stefan's uncle is just their cover story, it seems).

The effects in the show aren't exactly the best, but they're okay. The soundtrack is basically whatever music's out now (or been out for some time). The vampire 'rules' are a bit questionable (a chunky ring keeps Stefan from bursting into flame during the daytime? Seems Angel didn't destroy the Gem of Amarra after all). The dialogue isn't exactly the most creative ever, and some of the acting is pretty ordinary...but despite all this, I quite liked this premiere (thanks, largely, to the three leads). The show looks good, and there is the potential there for it to become quite intriguing and keep you watching. Like a lot of shows, The Vampire Diaries has bit of a rocky start, but it shows promise.

The First Episode...
taylorkingston18 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this episode a lot. It's a good series premiere and it has a lot of great moments. I wish Damon was in it more, but he is throughout the rest of the show, so why am I complaining?

In this episode, we meet Elena Gilbert. A nice, fun, sixteen-year-old, who's parents recently died. She, now living with her brother, Jeremy, and Aunt Jenna, tries to prepare herself for the first day back to school. Her best friend Bonnie is supportive and her other friend Caroline seems a little too noisy. She has a horrible teacher who literally says her parents dying isn't an excuse for not knowing facts, even though everyone else didn't know it either. Elena's ex-boyfriend, Matt, tries to be friends with her again, but is finding it hard. A new guy comes to school, Stefan Salvatore, who has a secret. He's a vampire. But a good one. He meets Elena and they have a connection. Stefan is happy to be back in Mystic Falls, Virginia, where the show is set, until his murderous, also vampire, brother, Damon, comes back to town.

Best part of the episode: Damon.

Worst part of the episode: Tyler.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Awesome.

A Great Episode with some Thrilling moments
rohanumpleby8 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Nina Dobrev was brilliant at acting in this, so was the rest. The love relationship was convincing enough for me. The episode was thrilling and showed the troubles of a boy being dumped buy a buitiful girl and then seeing a handsome man and her likeing him. The Fog added to the scares and was decent to show horror at the start. Great Television show Underatted Yes.

Overall: 9.0/10.

so i read your comment about how Vampire Diaries ripped off Twilight i think you should do a bit of research before you say anyone would rip off that piece of crap by Stephenie Meyer. sorry to burst your bubble but Stephenie Meyer is the one who rips off everyone trying to be someone. Vampire Diaries was published in Septemeber of 1991 where as Twilight was published in 2005. though the show may be similar to the crap people call a movie, Twilight, the story and its concept came way before Stephenie dreamt that ridiculous scene which caused dumb little girls to go crazy. and with the True Blood series originally known as, The Southern Vampire Mysteries the first one was published in 2001, 4 years before Twilight. I just finished watching the first episode and i have to admit it does feel like the same torture i went through when watching the Twilight movie, at least the actors can act, which is saying a lot because the main people in Twilight cant. so you're wrong. :) research before you say others are rip offs. just saying.

Love it
kikiboo_810 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Already watched it looong ago but it's about time to watch properly and add reviews here... So, Caroline is annoying from the very first episode and from what I remember only gets more annoying over the seasons. Jeremy is for now a typical angsty teen. Elena is crushing on Stefan pretty hard instantly. I can't say they're boring, but they just don't really give me any strong feelings, it's whatever.

Hello Brother the beginning of the TVDverse
jackDee-5656512 December 2020
I love the pilot episode, the moment Damon and Stefan meet again is still one of the best moments ever, I loved this show, it had the right balance, it wasnt as sissy as twilight but wasn't as porno filled as true blood, it is better than both as the storie characters and mythology is better

Somewhere In Between "Buffy", "Twilight" and "True Blood"
claudio_carvalho8 May 2012
In Mystic Falls, Virginia, the teenage siblings Elena and Jeremy Gilbert still grieve the loss of their parents in a car accident. When the newcomer Stefan Salvatore arrives at the high school, Elena and Stefan feel a great attraction for each other and sooner they date.

What Elena does not know is that Stefan is an ancient adolescent vampire that does not drink human blood anymore to avoid killing. However, when his evil brother Damon Salvatore arrives in Mystic Falls, his safety and his romance with Elena are compromised by Damon.

After "Buffy", there are many romantic films about love between a human adolescent and a "good" vampire, like the franchise "Twilight" and "True Blood". The pilot of "Vampire Diaries" follows the same wasted formula, with beautiful actresses and handsome actors and it seems to be predictable. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): "Piloto" ("Pilot")

Note: On 05 July 2013 I saw this episode again.

Not actually that bad depending on your expectations.
I don't know why I started watching this show, but here I am. This was not a terrible pilot episode, and I think it could get really good depending on what direction that they take it. However, this one episode had almost everything wrong with it that you expect from a CW show.

One of which was that literally every character looks like an Abercrombie & Fitch model. I also had this problem with Arrow and the problem remains here. However, I was kind of expecting this going in so it didn't stop me from taking the rest of the show in.

Another thing I had a problem with was the soundtrack and the score. Did we need either a pop song or a lovey-dovey Nicholas Sparks-like score in the background of each and every scene? There were some scenes where they probably would have worked better emotionally had they not had some OneRepublic song in the background. I now have Never Say Never by The Fray stuck in my head because of this episode.

Another thing I have to pick on is that there was some REALLY cheesy dialogue in some scenes. However, this is another thing that I kind of expected going in because of it being on The CW.

But I didn't give it six stars for no reason. I was actually pleasantly surprised by the execution of the storyline. Yes, there are vampire clichés in it, but they are introduced with a self-awareness that I kind of liked. I was afraid they would make it a world where nobody has ever heard of a vampire, but they didn't, which was nice.

I also didn't mind the acting by the main characters. They didn't completely suck, and they didn't go the Stephen Amell route, where everything you say is spoken in a seriously low and over dramatic voice.

This is a line spoken in this episode: "I'll give it a six. Missing style, but I was pleasantly surprised." That quote happens to exactly sum up my thoughts on this show.

I give The Vampire Diaries Season One Episode One 6/10 stars.

Not bad, not perfect either
ippolitimichelina26 February 2018
Plot I found it catchy most of the time.

Music

I felt like the music wasn't always matching the scene, for example, during some tense scenes they used semi sad music. Likewise, during some nice/cool scenes the music was rather nostalgic

Actor's performance

They were either overacting or not showing emotions at all. For example: Mr Tanner and Caroline. Also, what's with Elena's facial expression....it's always the same

PS: everything would be better that Twilight, that's pure garbage (both movies and books)

Watch it for a laugh if you've seen Twilight and Tru Blood
blarjotunn10 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
review originally posted at Critify.net

My Rating: Quality: 3; AbsoluteValueMeter: 7 (conditional)

Recipe for making one episode of Vampire Diaries: Start with 70 percent Twilight. Now add 30 percent Tru Blood. That's it!

This episode scores some major goodbad points, but only if you've seen both Twilight and Tru Blood. Let's break it down a bit. What exactly does this show derive from Twilight? Well, for complete starters, they are both about vampires. "C'mon, man, there's lots of movies and shows about vampires. Just because they're both based on books about vampires means it's a ripoff?" Alright, next they are both set in a high school. Both center around a high school girl and her dreamy vampire boyfriend, who is a goodguy vampire that doesn't eat people. They also both have a bad vampire nemesis. This one is played by Boone from Lost. Yeah! Both have a psychic side character girl. Both open and close with the central character girl narrating. Paul Wesley deserves an Emmy for his portrayal of Robert Patterson in this show. He absolutely nails his mannerisms and speech, and his writers feed him perfect dialog for the job. I almost thought I was watching the real Rob for a while there. "Um, I don't think Paul Wesley portrays Rob Patterson. I'm pretty sure he portrays the goodguy vampire dreamboat Stefan Salvatore. Rob Patterson plays goodguy vampire dreamboat Edward Cullen in some other show." Oh yeah. My bad. "And I think you're being a little hard on TVD. In Twilight, she is the new kid at his school, and in TVD, he is the new kid at her school." Point taken. "But yeah I guess you're right. Vampire Diaries sounds more like a 100% Twilight ripoff! How do you figure only 70?" Well, that's where Tru Blood comes in. You see, TB is like Twilight but without likable characters and with lots of sex and violence, and a different setting. So, in stride, TVD also adds some sex and gore to the mix. There are charming Twilightish characters, but there are also some Tru sleazebags. The setting feels more TB as well. Twilight is dreary and dreamlike. The camera is constantly moving. It is very intentional, and very comfortable. Tru Blood feels like a really low budget soap opera, maybe even closer to a mid budget porn film. I would say The Vampire Diaries falls somewhere in between, but certainly closer to Tru Blood. "Wow, I guess I'll be avoiding this show." No no no! You're missing my point. The Vampire Diaries is not average or below av, it is terrible! It will be a great laugh for you and your friends, as long as you're up to date on the other goodguy vampires. "Oh cool. I've never seen Tru Blood though. Is this goodbad enough to warrant watching some TB for?" Hell no! Nothing is that good.

Truly the worst episode of the series.
oddity9416 October 2011
The Vampire Diaries seems to be a show that gets better along the way. The Beginning of season 1 was mediocre. The second half was good, showing true potential. The second season was great. And so far the third season is even better.

And, oh dear god, was it ever bad at the beginning.

The first episode is crammed with bad acting, cheesy dialogue, interactions, writing, special effects, etc. Full of clichés. The characters are mostly all annoying or at least you don't care about them. The acting is wooden a lot of the time. It resembles 90210 more than it resembles a Vampire/Horror show.

Good News: It only gets better from here. The acting does get better, you start to actually care for most of the characters, clichés and cheesy things are thrown out almost immediately (like the fog and the bird...) and the story lines become less simple and more intricate.
