Petropolis: Aerial Perspectives on the Alberta Tar Sands pretty much does what it says on the tin. The film is 45 minutes long and gives us an aerial perspective on how large the Tar Sands Oil project really is. It’s directed by Peter Mettler and follows on nicely to the film, Dirty Oil made by Leslie Iwerks that I reviewed here.
This is a hard one to review. There is no narration until the final 7 minutes of the movie but until that point, there is no dialogue and no real interaction supplied for the audience to engage in at all. In an attempt to bring a different perspective to the documentaries that we’ve come to know and love, Petropolis use visual imagery and a soothing soundtrack to let the pictures do the talking.
Hundreds, if not thousands of giant lorries, smoking chimneys, open pits, factories, can be seen in...

I’ve just this minute finished watching Dirty Oil, an Erin Brokovich style documentary into the oil industry in the Us and Canada written, edited and directed by Leslie Iwerks who previously brought us The Pixar Story. This is the first movie that I’ve been able to review at home in ages and I thought I better get my thoughts down now before the next busy piece of work comes along.
Dirty Oil starts off by interviewing random Americans asking them where they think that most of their countries oil comes from. They all give the most obvious, and you’d think correct answer ‘The Middle East’ or ‘Saudi Arabia’. After the rolling credits end and the narration (given by Neve Campbell) begins, we learn that Canada is actually now the largest supplier of oil to the United States of America. This came as a rather large surprise to me,...

I Love You Phillip Morris (15)
(Glen Ficarra, John Requa, 2009, Us) Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor. 97 mins
Jim Carrey doesn't just play gay here, he plays flaming, in-your-face, heels-and-hotpants gay. And it kind of suits him. A police officer-turned-con man, his character is led even further astray when he falls for a fellow prison inmate (McGregor), and their courtship is treated like a traditional Hollywood love affair – albeit one full of prison breaks, audacious deceptions and outrageous accessorising. Gleefully trashy, at times exhaustingly unpredictable, it's certainly a brave move.
The Scouting Book For Boys (15)
(Tom Harper, 2009, UK) Thomas Turgoose, Holly Grainger, Rafe Spall. 93 mins
High hopes have been pinned on this, with Skins scribe Jack Thorne and plenty of young talent on board. Set in a Norfolk caravan camp, it's the tale of a boy-girl friendship developing into something else – quite what is up for grabs when they hatch a fake-kidnapping plan.

Although Dirty Oil isn’t the sort of thing we’d usually report on, I thought that it was well worth bringing to your attention as this trailer for the movie looks intriguing. Dirty Oil looks at America’s obsession with the increasingly in-demand product and probably raises a few eye-brows whilst doing so.
Dirty Oil is directed by Leslie Iwerks who has previously brought us The Pixar Story and The Hand Behind the Mouse: The Ub Iwerks Story. Neve Campbell narrates in this documentary style look at the Us oil industry with interviews from leading experts.
Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments below. Dirty Oil is currently showing at the Panton Street Odeon in London.

Actress Neve Campbell has thrown her support behind a campaign to stop the extraction of oil from Canada's beaches, after seeing the "devastating" effect on the environment. The "Scream" star narrates new film "Dirty Oil", which highlights the negative impact of the oil industry in her native country.
And seeing how tar is extracted from sands on Canadian beaches left Campbell so appalled, she's determined to raise awareness of the issue. She tells Britain's Daily Express, "I was invited to see what was going on there and speak to some of the people affected and I was really overwhelmed."
"It's devastating for the environment, and devastating for the First Nations (the indigenous peoples of Canada). I was truly appalled by what I saw. For me it's about helping them have a voice."...
