Pictures: Samba TV / Netflix
Welcome to another rundown of every stat released by the TV insights company Samba TV. Below, we’ll run through all their released viewing stats (whether through their socials or through somewhere else) for Netflix’s newly released movies for the past three years.
How does Samba TV get its data? As described on its own website, the company tracks what appears on the users’ TV by reading pixels and utilizing this data for personalized recommendations on the TV or mobile apps connected to the television.
It’s also important to note that Samba TV stats typically only cover US households.
Of course, Netflix itself releases excellent viewing stats every Tuesday via its top 10 site. However, more data is always good, and it’s good to see shows and movies benchmarked against each other from a company like Samba TV.

“People from all over the world fall in love with Mexico City as soon as they see the dimension of this beautiful capital,” says actress Eiza González, star of Extrapolations and Godzilla vs. Kong, of her mile-high hometown. With top-flight restaurants, a thriving cocktail scene and some 150 museums, Mexico City — or el Df, for Federal District, as it’s called locally (though in 2016 it was officially renamed Ciudad de Mexico, acronym Cdmx) — is one of the hottest global cities of 2023. “What people don’t expect is how cosmopolitan and diverse it is and how many trendy and cool spots it has,” says Schmigadoon! star Jaime Camil. “Mexico City has to be one of the most energizing and fascinating cities in the world.” Or as Eva Longoria (who has a home there) describes the city in her 2023 CNN series Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico, “It’s crazy. It’s crowded. It’s noisy.

This Star Wars: Ahsoka article contains spoilers.
So much of Ahsoka‘s third episode feels like classic Star Wars, from Sabine’s blind training nodding back to A New Hope to the space battle that combines elements from both the Original and Prequel Trilogies for one of the best dogfights ever made for Disney+. But that doesn’t mean Ahsoka has skipped out on bringing back a bunch of stuff from Rebels this time around. In fact, one major cameo allows this Disney+ series to pick up exactly where its animated predecessor left off.
Here are all the Star Wars easter eggs and callbacks we spotted in “Time to Fly”:
Evan Whitten as Jacen Syndulla
There was never any doubt that Jacen Syndulla would pop up in Ahsoka, but we definitely didn’t expect to see this little dude so soon. Introduced in the final minutes of the Rebels...

It has to be tempting for Lionsgate’s ‘”John Wick: Chapter 4,” Amazon’s “Air,” and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to accelerate their PVOD releases: The home market is dying for something new to watch.
After 60 days in theaters, Disney released “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” today and it immediately went to #1 at iTunes; expect other charts to follow suit. For now, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) repeated as #1 at Vudu and Fandango for a third week, with recent releases “65” (Sony), “Creed III” (MGM), and “Shazam: The Way of Water” (Warner Bros. Discovery) rotating second through fourth spots on all three charts, all at $19.99. The only new title is “The Jesus Revolution” (Lionsgate), for sale at $19.99.
Lionsgate release windows follow no set pattern. “Jesus” had seven weekends in theaters before home release, but “John Wick 4” was offered for pre-sale to great success parallel to its March 24 theatrical debut.

New to the charts and landing at No. 3 in the latest Wrap Report is Netflix’s new comedy-drama “Beef,” which more than one million U.S. households watched during its first four days of streaming. Millennials and Gen Z audiences helped drive viewer interest, overindexing by the largest margin of any age group based on viewership of the premiere. The subsequent two episodes of the miniseries followed suit at No. 4 and No. 7 on the charts, with the premiere episode driving audiences to continue watching.
Featuring a predominantly Asian-American cast, with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in leading roles, “Beef” generated strong viewership with Asian households overindexing by double digits (13%) compared to the national average for the week of April 5-11. Supporting actors Young Mazino, Joseph Lee, David Choe, Patti Yasutake and “Emily in Paris” star Ashley Park also contributed to the diverse “Beef” cast with Asian representation.

This creature is a baby chupacabra who’s been separated from its parents and has taken refuge in Alex’s grandfather’s barn. But all is not well – Christian Slater’s government funded scientist has been tracking the chupacabras, believing they have healing qualities that he’d be able to harness.
Will Alex be able to help reunite little Chupa with his family before the ruthless scientist gets his hands on him? And might he learn some lessons about family on the way? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.

Netflix always seems to know when it has a potential hit. Although the action-comedy sequel “Murder Mystery 2,” starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, was probably a no-brainer, the continuing success of the spy thriller series “The Night Agent” certainly must be a nice surprise. “65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.

The primary purpose of this roundup is to highlight films new to streaming platforms that could potentially contend for awards. But some weekends there are no new releases that could credibly be considered awards contenders. This is one of those weeks. But we don’t take the week off. Instead, we highlight the best of what’s new on streaming, whether it’s a contender or not. This week’s picks include a notable new release and three older Oscar contenders.
The contender to watch this week: “Fatal Attraction”
Before the Paramount+ adaptation starring Lizzy Caplan and Joshua Jackson premieres at the end of April, revisit this classic for a dose of bunny-boiling electricity. “Fatal Attraction” was the third-highest-grossing release of 1987, eventually earning six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. Ready to fall in love with a cuddly little Chupacabra? Because you will if you watch Netflix’s new film “Chupa.”
“Chupa” stars Evan Whitten as Alex, a kid living in the United States whose mom sends him to visit his grandfather (Demián Bichir) in Mexico for spring break. (This is in the early 1990s.) While in Mexico, he befriends a Chupacabra – an ancient creature from Mexican folklore, who he dubs Chupa. Together, he and his cousins hide Chupa and outwit a nefarious operative trying to capture the creature for use in the biomedical field and attempt to return Chupa to his family.
It’s a terrific little movie, clearly indebted to the Amblin movies of the 1980s and early 1990s, with some fun performances and an absolutely adorable creature in Chupa.

Chupa is a Netflix movie directed by Jonás Cuarón starring Evan Whitten and Demian Bichir.
The chupacabra is a legend about an animal that feeds on the blood of goats. Coming all the way from Mexico, the story has become a classic horror story.
This time, Jonás Cuarón gives the story a more youthful twist and turns it into a heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure in the style of the 80’s and those charming and forgettable films that followed in the wake of E.T.
It’s fun to see Christian Slater again.

Alex lives in Kansas City and studies at Lakewood Middle School, where he doesn’t interact with any of his classmates but engages himself in playing a game on the Game Boy, for which he is called weird and teased with words like ‘Taquito.’ Alex feels out of place and isn’t able to brave this situation at school. Jonás Cuarón creates a family adventure film based on Latin America’s folklore about a mythical creature. It’s very “Amblin-esque” according to him. So why make a movie about Chupacabras, why make it a family adventure, and really, why call it “Chupa?” The word has a different connotation in both the Latin and Filipino culture.

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.
Watch the trailer for “Beef”:
More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. What should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.
Check out the trailer for “Florida Man”:
Also coming to Netflix in April will be the final chapter of “Firefly Lane.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Brooke Shields reveals she was sexually assaulted in her 20s in her upcoming documentary Brooke Shields: Pretty Baby.
Shields alleges she was assaulted by an unnamed Hollywood executive but never came forward to accuse the man.
“[I thought] no one is going to believe me,” she told People ahead of the documentary’s premiere on Hulu. “People weren’t believing those stories back then. I thought I would never work again.”
The two-part film will focus on the actor’s rise as a child star and the sexualisation she was subject to aged 15 in 1980’s The Blue Lagoon.
“Doing the documentary, you see it all together, and it’s a miracle that I survived,” the 57-year-old added.
“It’s taken me a long time to process it,” she said of her alleged assault. “I’m more angry now than I was able to be then. If you’re afraid, you’re rightfully so.

Spanish-speaking viewers have pointed out an unfortunate translation issue with Netflix’s new family adventure film, Chupa.
The film, which is set to be released by the streaming service on 7 April, is about a mysterious chupacabra – inspired by a mythical creature in South American folklore that sucked the blood of goats. It was written and directed by Jonás Cuarón, son of Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón.
Chupa follows Alex, a young boy from Kansas City who visits Mexico to meet his family. While visiting his grandfather’s ranch, he befriends a baby chupacabra, which he calls Chupa.
Spanish-speaking social media users have pointed out that “chupa” literally means “suck” or “to suck”.
The trailer actually addresses the word’s meaning, with one character pointing out that Alex’s nickname for the chupacabra means “sucker”, suggesting it could be interpreted as “bad”. Alex’s dad says he likes the nickname.

Director Jonás Cuarón reimagines the terrifying mythical beast as a cute and furry little creature in Netflix’s Chupa. The two-minute trailer for the family-friendly adventure confirms this incredibly adorable baby chupacabra looks nothing like a goat-killing, nightmare-inducing monster.
“I was a small kid when the legend started. When the idea came of turning [the myth] on its head and using it to tell a family adventure, I was immediately excited,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “I’ve always been a huge fan of E.T. and believe that stories like that are so powerful because they play on the idea of kids being misunderstood by adults. Chupa might be a monster but he’s the only one that truly understands what Alex is going through. The bond between a boy and a creature is so pure, like with a pet, it transcends language.”

Although Netflix’s family adventure Chupa is inspired by the legend of the chupacabra, director Jonás Cuarón was determined to make the creature at the heart of his film much less fearsome than the mythical creature. “Our goal was to create an incredibly cute creature based on a terrifying legend,” said Cuarón in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “The mythical creature was described as a hairless dog with wings and sharp teeth. The first photos from Chupa confirm this creature, at least as a youngster, is anything but terrifying.

Hello, dear readers! Before those of us in the States get ready to gobble down our Thanksgiving dinners later this week, we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to first. One of this writer’s favorite films of all time, Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) is getting the 4K treatment from Kino Lorber this Tuesday, and Arrow Video is resurrecting both The Snake Girl and the Silver Haired Witch and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge on Blu-ray as well (this is also very exciting news in my world). Arrow is also re-releasing a handful of other titles—The Cat O’ Nine Tails, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and C.H.U.D.—and the first season of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery is headed to Blu-ray as well.
