Robert Townsend has come on board to direct a remake of the comedy "Brewster's Millions".
George Barr McCutcheon penned the original novel which has been adapted many times, though the most well-known would be Walter Hill's 1985 version starring Richard Pryor and John Candy.
That film follows a baseball fan who is called to New York city to hear the last will and testament of his recently deceased great-uncle. Said uncle makes an offer - if he can spend $30 million in 30 days, he's entitled to $300 million. If not, he loses it all. There's also strict conditions on how he can spend the cash, including having no more assets than what he started with.
Michael William Schmidt has penned the new adaptation which Joseph and Jack Nasser will produce. The new film changes the stakes - he must spend $100 million in one week to inherit $1 billion.

Here's something to get excited about. Director Jody Hill is once again teaming up with his muse Danny McBride for a new comedy called L.A.P.I., in which McBride will play a "beaten down, hard boiled" private investigator. The movie will be written by Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan, two guys who have apparently been making a name for themselves with a spec script called Comic Con, about a group of friends who pull off a heist at the annual fan gathering in San Diego. They haven't had a script make it to the screen yet, but they did land on the 2009 Black List for best unproduced screenplays, and they are also penning the upcoming remake of Brewster's Millions. L.A.P.I. will be the first movie under the new production house [1] formed by Hill, McBride and David Gordon Green, called Rough House Pictures. Green will serve as producer on the film.

I make no effort to hide the fact that I love Jody Hill as a director. He's sort of a wild man that sees no reason to broadcast his insanity, seeking rather to coolly offend you while sitting back and puffing a cigarette. I also make no effort to hide the fact that I find Danny McBride increasingly annoying - an actor that plays the same person in every role (although he admittedly clenched his fists and toned it down for Up in the Air). That wouldn't be so bad if his only role wasn't a giant toolbag. So, it's both fortunately and unfortunately that we're reporting a partnership between the two for the upcoming L.A. P.I. - directed by Hill and starring McBride. The story is being kept a secret, and the title isn't much help, although it was also the working title for a little film called Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. In...

Now that Danny McBride and Jody Hill ostensibly have the keys to the kingdom by way of their new production company, Rough House Pictures, the world of comedy better watch its stagnant ass. Hill is attached to direct, and McBride to star as a "beaten down, hardboiled private investigator," in a new action-comedy called L.A.P.I. Their pal and fellow North Carolina School of the Arts alum, David Gordon Green, who co-founded the company with them last year, will co-produce. What's intriguing is that unlike their previous collaborations The Foot Fist Way, HBO's Eastbound & Down, and Observe & Report, the idea and pitch for L.A.P.I. originates outside the crew's creative circle, from screenwriter team Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan. The duo have two other buzzing projects in development: a comedy entitled Comic Con (one of two scripts by these guys on the 2009 Black List) and a remake of Brewster's Millions.

Anyone who has watched The Fist Foot Way, Observe and Report or any episode of Eastbound & Down immediately recognizes one thing: Jody Hill does not look at the world the same way most of us do. Call in nihilistic, call it Hobbesian, call it whatever you like: his films reflect a dark part of the human condition that few directors are brave enough to touch upon. Up to this point, though, his work has examined what would otherwise be humdrum or even happy subjects. The same can't be said for his next project. Variety says frequent collaborator Danny McBride will star in Hill's next film, L.A.P.I., as a detective straight out of the minds of Dashiell Hammet or Raymond Chandler. The concept for the film is based on a pitch by writers Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan, who are currently writing a remake of Brewster's Millions. The...

After Will Ferrell and Adam McKay laid eyes upon The Foot Fist Way, writer/director Jody Hill and actor Danny McBride had gotten their breakthrough. Years and years of patience paid off after Hill, McBride and friend David Gordon Green moved out to Hollywood after film school in North Carolina, and now the three are in the thick of it. After the success of their HBO series "Eastbound and Down," I was wondering when Hill and McBride would get back together, and now Variety reports the two will reunite for L.A.P.I. a story (no details are known yet) that has McBride playing a hard-boiled, downtrodden private investigator. The film, being developed through Hill, McBride and Green's recently founded Rough House Pictures, is based on a pitch from writers Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan who are also working on a remake of Brewster's Millions after the much talked...

Rough House, the Mandate Pictures-based company set up by Jody Hill, Danny McBride and David Gordon Green, has picked up its first project, the action-comedy "L.A.P.I." from scribes Michael Diliberti and Matthew Sullivan.
Hill is attached to direct, and McBride is attached to star. Hill, McBride, Green and Rough House head of production Matt Reilly will produce. The project falls in line with the company's strategy of making high-concept comedies with a specific brand of humor, exemplified by titles such as "Eastbound & Down," "The Foot Fist Way" and "Observe and Report."
While details of the plot are being kept under wraps, it is known McBride starring as a beaten down, hardboiled P.I. in the action-comedy.
Mandate's Nathan Kahane is exec producing.
Hill's most recent movie was "Observe and Report." McBride most appeared in "Up in the Air." Both are repped by CAA.
