Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between.
Today we dig deep into the surprisingly eclectic career of action star Jet Li. Yes, Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan (in which Li appears) has been delayed. But we decided to go ahead and record anyway, virus be damned!
Now, although the Wushu legend made a name for himself stateside with an effective villain role in 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4, he had helped revitalize the martial arts film in China a half-a-decade earlier.
Our B-Sides for this episode include: Kiss Of The Dragon, Cradle 2 The Grave, War, and The Forbidden Kingdom. Despite our focus on Li’s Hollywood output, we encourage our listeners to seek out stuff like Once Upon A Time In China, Hero,...

Production is under way on “The Whistleblower,” one of the biggest Australian-Chinese co-production movies ever made. The film is a thriller about a Chinese expatriate who discovers a conspiracy at the firm he is working for.
The film is directed by Chinese woman director Xue Xiaolu, who achieved a critical breakthrough in 2010 by putting Jet Li in a drama role in “Ocean Heaven.”She achieved commercial success with 2013 romance “Finding Mr Right.”
The cast is headed by Lei Jiayin (“Guns and Roses”) and “Lust, Caution” and “Finding Mr Right” star Tang Wei, with Xi Qi and John Batchelor (“Red Dog”). Dialog is in Mandarin and English.
The official co-production film has a gross budget of some $39 (A$55 million) before rebates and incentives. At least $28.5 million (A$40 million) is being spent in the state of Victoria, where the Dockyards Studios are being used. Filming continues through October.

Like several of his contemporaries including Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen, Jet Li has been stuck in a rut of period pieces for the past few years. Sure he has glorified cameos in The Expendables films and he made a drama (the excellent Ocean Heaven) too, but for lead action roles? It’s been a string of historical epics since 2007. Happily, also like Chan (Police Story 2013) and Yen (Special ID), Li is finally returning with an action flick set in modern times. Badges of Fury teams him up with the equally awesome Collin Chou (Flashpoint) and Wu Jing (Spl) in a story about cops tasked with stopping a serial killer who’s been targeting a popular singer’s ex-boyfriends. The original Hong Kong trailer released over the summer and gave some of us reason to pause with its lack of action and focus on untranslatable humor. Now that the film is getting a release in the States...

Yep, you read the headline correctly. In the upcoming Chinese drama Ocean Heaven (海洋天堂), action star Jet Li will perform no martial arts whatsoever. On the contrary, Li took a pay-cut to his usual high salary for a rare opportunity to stretch his acting chops as a terminally ill father seeking the means to ensure the well-being of his autistic adolescent son. The heartwarming film marks the directorial debut of Xue Xiaolu, the co-scriptwriter of Chen Kaige's Together, a drama similar in the father & son theme. Here's the official synopsis:
One person out of every thousand is born with autism. It follows that China has over one million autism patients. David (Wen Zhang) is one of them: he looks absent-minded, repeats other peoples words, swims with amazing ease, keeps everything at home in exact order and maybe he is not totally aware of his mothers death some years ago.
