Vice TV is expanding its popular franchise “Dark Side of the Ring” into the world of the 1990s and football.
The two new series, “Dark Side of the Football” and “Dark Side of the ’90s” are currently in production and will air in 2021.
The professional wrestling docuseries, which was renewed for a third season in October, is Vice TV’s highest-rated show.
“Dark Side of the Football” will shine a light on stories that live in the shadows of America’s favorite sport. It will explore the sometimes-flawed men behind the masks; the coaches, teams and leagues who control their fates; and the untold story behind bizarre and tragic off-the-field events — facts that often have been hidden to shield fans from discovering unsettling truths about the game they love.
The series is produced by Jailbirds producer 44 Blue Productions.

Exclusive: Dark Side of the Ring has become Vice TV’s most-watched show, and now the youth-skewing broadcaster is expanding the franchise.
The cable network has ordered two spinoffs – Dark Side of the Football and Dark Side of the ‘90s. The two series are in production and will join a third season of Dark Side of the Ring in 2021.
This comes after Morgan Hertzan, Vice TV’s EVP & General Manager, told Deadline in April that the network was looking to explore new strands for the franchise.

The demise of the CBC has always been a source of amusement. Hardy har har. This year, however, the Canadian broadcaster is in on the joke. Sure, it may have cancelled ratings hit Battle of the Blades -- along with Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy!, but it clearly had no choice. Blades was too expensive to produce, while the rights to the game shows were equally costly.
During last week's upfront presentation, Kirstine Stewart, executive vice-president of English services, said the CBC was "moving forward" -- and she wasn't kidding. The broadcaster will continue to do what it's always done -- support 100 per cent Canadian content while entertaining its loyal fans; just in a less extravagant way (unlike this year's season preview, which was the biggest I've ever seen from the network).
Arctic Air star Pascale Hutton loved the spectacle. "It's this idea that we really need to promote our shows and promote our talent,...

Battle of the Blades is a skating competition series that airs on CBC Television, and apparently, it's got quite a bit of a following up there. It's sort of like the new U.S. series Skating with the Stars, save that there aren't any outside stars involved -- everyone involved is a professional figure skater.
Strangely enough, though the U.S.'s Skating with the Stars is only beginning tonight, Battle of the Blades wrapped its second season up tonight, crowning the "Russian Dream Team" Ekaterina Gordeeva and Valeri Bure the winners of the competition. Here's the press release from CBC:
Toronto – November 22, 2010 – After eight weeks of incredible performances, tremendous showmanship and the promised blood, sweat and tears - the final decision came from Canadian voters who declared thatEkaterina “Katia” Gordeeva and Valeri Bure are this season’s winners on Battle Of The Blades.Despite their Russian heritage and American residency,...

Tonight at 8Pm, the second season of 'Battle of the Blades' will conclude on CBC after naming a winner from among the three remaining teams. Mere seconds after Bryan Adams claims in song that there will never be another tonight, ABC and CTV will attempt to prove him wrong, debuting 'Skating with the Stars' at 9Pm Et/Pt. I have a number of problems with this -- so many in fact, that I'm going to resort to a bulleted list format.
1. Why not franchise 'Battle of the Blades' instead of 'Skating With the Stars'?
If the U.S. had come up with a successful skating competition show, you'd better believe we'd be watching some Canadianized version of it, the rights bought and paid for. Call this hypothetical show 'So You Think You Can Battle with Celebrity Blades of Canada' or whatever, but...

Without any surprises, one of the most popular Canadian reality shows is back. For that matter, the Toronto Star revealed yesterday the identity of the competitors for the second season of this show that has been compared to Dancing with the Stars.
Here's the concept of Battle of the Blades: this reality pairs up eight retired NHL players with eight female figure skaters. Each week, each team will have to perform a choreography on Sunday nights live in Toronto. The next day, three team facing elimination will compete. At the end of this result day, the public's choice will be revealed. With that said, the winning team gets to donate $100,000 to a cause of their choice.
For this year, the Toronto Star revealed that participants, among the hockey players, include Theoren Fleury, Kelly Chase, Russ Courtnall, Valeri Bure, P.J. Stock, Patrice Brisebois, Todd Warriner and Georges Laraque.

It's not all Americana here at TVOvermind. Yours truly hails from Canada – Toronto to be exact – so when we got an invitation to attend CBC's 2010 Upfront presentation, one of our contributing writers was off and running to the red carpet. Sarah tells me that she had a great time speaking with some of the stars and snapping photos. We've pulled together some red carpet pics and snippets from her interviews below. I also suspect she made an enemy out of figure skater Kurt Browning, but I'm hoping he forgets all about that.

The CBC is a Canadian institution. Like most Canadians, I have a special affinity with the network. It's the reason I was born in Canada, it helped form my early childhood TV habits and it's still the source of a handful of my favourite shows. However, for a long time now, the CBC has suffered...

Toronto -- Swedish format distributor Sparks Network is to handle international sales of the Canadian ice skating competition series "Battle of the Blades" from indie producer Insight Production Company.
The format distribution deal follows the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. ordering a second cycle of the homegrown elimination-style reality series, which sees former National Hockey League tough guys master and perform graceful ice dance routines with former Olympic female figure skaters.
Fredrik af Malmborg, managing director of Stockholm-based Sparks Network, said the combination of professional ice hockey and figure skating ballerinas "is simply irresistible."
Interest in turning local ice hockey heavyweights into Lycra-clad dancers is likely to come from the same countries that competed in the recent 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games' figure skating and ice hockey competitions, including Scandinavia, Russia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, South Korea and Japan.

Whether you've been waiting for it or didn't expect it, here comes the time to express my thoughts on Battle of the Blades, a reality show shining by its presence alongside another reality show called Dragons' Den in CBC's schedule grid.
For those who don't know, the show (hosted by Ron Maclean and Kurt Browning), which is recorded live at the Maple Leafs Garden in Toronto, is more or less formatted like Dancing With the Stars and Dancing on Ice, a British reality show in which celebrities are paired up with a figure skater. Moreover, eight former NHL stars are paired up with eight female top figure skaters. Each week, Canadians decide which couple survive after the first performance (Sunday at 8 Pm) and which ones go in the bottom 2 the following day (Monday at 8 Pm) in order to perform for their survival.
By the way, before I start telling my opinion,...
