Samuel thinks he's found someone to fill Joseph's shoes. He's going to get them, wearing a suit. His power, he exposits, is that he can control the earth. Not so much his tie. Lydia ties it for him. She also offers to do his bidding. He says he has to do it, he has to get Joseph's compass back. She says his brother is irreplaceable. He says he has a candidate and needs to see if he deserves a place at their table. He then sucks up a jar of tattoo ink into his fingers. She wonders if he might go home while he's "out there." He says he doesn't want to go back again.
The alarm clock goes off at 5:45. He gets a knock on the door and gets served by one fo the people he "saved."
Now it's 6 and lights are going off and a bed is shaking with a blond in it. She turns off her "alarm" and cradles her cat. She dresses, put in her earbuds, kisses her cat and is shocked to see something odd coming out of her faucet. Droplets of water and smoke. S

Parkman and the Cylon (Parkman's partner: the same actor used to play a Cylon in Battlestar Galactica) are on a stakeout waiting for a warrant. It's a drug bust. Parkman is antsy. His partner tells him to relax. Parkman admits he slipped on his "sobriety" and is still haunted by his ghosts. His partner gets out. He sees Sylar in the rearview, who says he's not a ghost. Parkman tells him to leave. Sylar says that's easy, give me back my body. Parkman says no way, he'll pay the price of having him in his head if it means he's powerless. The partner returns, worried that Parkman won't keep it together. Parkman writes a "1" on his 30 day chip and says he's starting over. They bust into the house. They check the rooms. The partner goes upstairs. Sylar keeps reappearing, startling and annoying Parkman. He tells him to check the closet, the dealer is in there with a gun. Parkman corners him and looks at Sylar, realizing maybe he's not a ghost after all.
Noah comes to visit Claire. He's got gifts. She hugs him and grimaces. He says he's okay and asks about Annie's suicide. She apologizes for not calling, he says he hopes she's alright. She says fine, unconvincingly. She says college is an adjustment, she's homesick. He offers to take her to lunch. She goes to the bathroom to freshen up. Gretchen corners her and confronts her about avoiding her. She can't believe they're not going to talk about "this." Claire tries to tell her she didn't see what she saw. Gretchen says she doesn't have to lie: she wonders if she's a vampire or a freakish government experiment. Claire introduces her to her dad, he invites Gretchen for lunch. Claire tries to get her not to come. Gretchen comes.

Sylar says the house isn't used for drugs, but something much worse.
Peter goes to get a file on the man suing him, William Hooper. The blond woman from earlier points to a sign asking him to submit it in writing. He grouses about saving someone's life and getting sued. She's not paying attention. (Wanna guess she's deaf?) He notices her earbuds aren't connected to anything. He asks what she's listening to. She says nothing. She knocks over a mug and it gives off that same spark from this morning.
Peter get his info and goes to visit the man who sued him, who's in physical therapy. He enters and it's Samuel. Peter is confused since he's never met the man before. Samuel says they did meet and Peter was so fast that he was negligent. Peter thinks it's a scam. He explains about the death of his brother Joseph and how he has to take care of his family and will Peter let them go hungry. Peter thinks it's a mistake and tries to leave. Samuel says isn't it possible that Peter is so spread thin that he forgot him. Peter says no.
The blond, Emma, is asking, a doctor -with sign language- if she's going blind because of the weird things she's singnig. The doctor- played Nurse Ratched! Louise Fletcher- says she's not. The doctor wonders if it's synethesia, "seeing sounds." She thinks she's seeing sound as color which is apparently common in deaf people. The doctor says it's serious. The doctor wonders why Emma files records when she could be treating patients. Emma's a doctor? Emma says she likes her job, it's quiet, she wears her earbuds so no one will ask her phone number of for directions and then when they do give her the sad face upon the recognition of deafness

She says she saw a girl on You Tube who can't feel pain and is now obsessed with physiology. She asks Claire to take some classes with her. Claire asks why she would be interested? Gretchen says it would be fun to do together since Claire is undeclared. Claire says she can be undeclared until third year. Gretchen tells her not to put off the inevitable and asks what Noah does. He says he's retired but he's always finding new reasons to go back to work. He glares at Claire.
Back at the drug den, Sylar holds the stuffed rabbit and quizzes Parkman while the Cylon goes to check out some keys. Parkman asks for Sylar's help. Sylar ignores him, giving him a dose of his own medicine. He says Parkman's mind, where he lives, is very sad and his anxieties are well-founded since Parkman has no confidence. Sylar thinks Parkman wanted him in his head to help him. Parkman yells at Sylar, the dealer thinks he's yelling at him. He finds a cut up magazine and then stumbles on a ransom note. Sylar is proud Parkman found it by himself.
Gretchen thanks Noah for lunch and heads to the bathroom. He thinks Claire told her. She says she didn't. Noah says he has to get the Haitian to wipe her mind. Claire says she really wants to trust her but given how her life has gone with trust issues she's unsure but she's tired of keeping this secret and tells her to ask her anything and she'll tell her the truth.
Peter shows up to Samuel in the park and apologizes, saying he knows he was at the accident and that he's going to make it right. Samuel asks if he's ever lost a brother. Peter says no. Samuel says he and Joseph grew up nearby and he thought he'd go back and relive good times but there are too many bad memories to go back. He says he can't seem to find solace anywhere. Peter says he knows grieving is messy and people can be well-intentioned but not really helpful. He tells people that they're not alone as a way to ease their pain. Samuel asks why he became a paramedic. He says he wanted to save lives not watch them pass. Samuel thanks him, says he's just who he thought he was and he's dropping the lawsuit. They shake hands, for awhile. Peter tells him since he came all the way out here he should visit his home. Samuel says he will.
As Samuel walks by he passes Emma on a bench who's watching a cellist. As she watches him play she sees the sound emit from his bow. She's freaked out. He collects his busking money and goes to get a snack. She walks over and plucks one of his strings and the light emits. She sits down with the bow and draws it across and even more light comes out and the soundtrack seems to imply that she can also hear the music she's making. The light swirls around her and people gather. Peter hears the music and goes to see her. She stops and the people clap. Peter smiles at her. She hands the cellist back his bow and runs away. Peter walks after her but does not give chase.
Samuel goes to visit his childhood home. It's a big 'un, behind wrought iron gates with a fancy fountain out front. There's a fancy party going on, he chimes the door. She says she told Gretchen everything and she can't close herself off for the rest of her life. He apologizes for being harsh earlier. He's having trouble fighting his instinct to protect her. He says he will always be there and that she's right, she can handle her own problems. They bid each other goodnight.
Claire goes back in her room and asks Gretchen to be her room mate. Gretchen agrees. They shake hands.
