- Echo and Bennett have a shocking confrontation in which she reveals the reason for her grudge against Echo, while Adelle goes head-to-head with Stuart Lipman, the ruthless head of the Washington, D.C. Dollhouse, to lobby for Echo's safe return. Meanwhile, Topher sees double when he involves Victor in his espionage plans to hack into the D.C. Dollhouse computer to locate both Echo and Senator Perrin as they try to run from Perrin's wife Cindy.—matt-282
- We open with Echo being tortured by Bennett, the hottie programmer with a dead arm. Meanwhile, Perrin begs his wife Cindy to spare him. "I don't want to forget who I am," he pleads. Cindy explains that Perrin was a "nobody" before they found him. "We spent three years building up your credibility," she says. "When you finally exonerate Rossum at the Senate hearings today, no one will question you." Cindy then explains that she HATED acting as the man's wife -- and why not? His memory is about to be erased.
Echo, in the meantime, remembers that her real name is Caroline. Bennett then produces a file containing a memory of the last time the two ladies were together. "I want you to feel this," Bennett says. She FLASH inside Echos head, where the memory plays out. But we're not privy to it -- at least not yet. Cut to the back of a limo, where Adelle attempts to calm Topher, who is quite excited to be out of the office. They head to the office of Howard Lipman. Lipman says helping to retrieve Echo will "take time." He is clearly stalling.
Later, Topher goes to visit Bennett, chief programmer at the D.C. Dollhouse. "For realsies?" Topher asks. "You're Bennett?!" The two seem to hit it off -- call it professional admiration. Alas, Bennett explains that Echo interfered with the Rossum directive, and it's unlikely that Lipman will let her go. Back at Lipman's office, Adelle appears to be coming on to Lipman in an attempt to change his mind. But just when you think they two are about to get hot and heavy, she grabs him where it REALLY hurts. "If you don't return my active, I will send someone to cut these off," Adelle purrs. Lipman agrees to "compromise." Topher, in the meantime, examines Echo. When Bennett steps out, Topher immediately hooks his phone to Bennett's computer, routing its information to Victor back at L.A. headquarters. "I see what you see," Victor says.
Cut to Perrin, who wakes up with a start. He tries to rouse Echo, but she is still reliving the memory shown to her by Bennett. In it, Bennett lies on the ground, her arm trapped under a slab of rock. "Don't leave me!" she begs. But Caroline/ Echo walks away, claiming they'll both get nabbed if she stays. Suddenly, Echo wakes up. She and Perrin exit the lab -- with Bennett watching on the monitor. "Bye, Caroline," she whispers before SLAMMING her head into the computer screen. A bleeding Bennett than finds Topher. She blames Echo for her wounds, claiming that the Doll took Perrin.
Out on the street, Echo explains to Perrin that he has a GPS-type device in his neck. If they want to escape, some cutting needs to be done. They retreat into a nearby restaurant bathroom with a HUGE knife. November, in the meantime, is being briefed by Cindy for her testimony. Cindy gets a call from Lipman (under the watchful eye of Adelle): "Perrin has escaped." Cindy is NOT pleased. She gathers a bunch of goons wearing sunglasses and goes after Perrin's tracking device -- only to find it lying in a blood-splattered sink. The impromptu surgery was apparently a success.
Back at Lipman's office, Adelle worries what will happen if Perrin isn't at the hearing to testify. Just then, Topher enters with his new buddy Bennett. Turns out Bennett has a plan: "We might be able to reconfigure the disrupter to incapacitate Echo and Perrin without actually locating them." Lipman and Adelle agree and hand over "brain maps" for both escapees. Of course, Bennett has her own nefarious plans and does some fancy programming behind Topher's back. But to what purpose?
Cut to Echo and Perrin. The latter explains that they never got a chance to reprogram him. "We can make it to the hearings we can expose them," Perrin says. "We can be what we decide to be." Just then, Perrin grabs his head in great pain. Bennett's programming is taking effect! Perrin suddenly grabs Echo and begins SLAMMING her against the wall. Fortunately, Echo is no slouch in the fighting department. She quickly escapes suddenly-psycho Perrin. "You don't have to be what they tell you to be!" she says. But to no avail. Perrin, wild eyed, attacks all over again.
Back at Lipman's office, Topher is aghast. "What did you do!?" he asks the hottie programmer. Bennett then explains that Echo (Caroline) used to be her best friend until the Doll walked away and left the programmer pinned under a rock. "This is my gift from Caroline!" says Bennett, holding her shriveled limb. Realizing he has no choice, Topher COLD COCKS Bennett in the face. She goes down in a heap. Topher then races to the computer and calls Victor. The two must somehow call off attack-dog Perrin!
Speaking of, the not-so-good senator stalks Echo through a greenhouse with murder in his eyes. He catches up with her and a furious battle ensues! It ends when Cindy suddenly appears, gun drawn. She KNOCKS DOWN Echo before attempting to sweet talk her hubby. "We can be happy like before," she coos. No dice. Perrin grabs Cindy and begins choking her. Meanwhile, Victor and Topher have finally figured out how to switch Perrin back to his old, more gentle self. They make it happen with a few keystrokes -- and Perrin instantly drops his wife. "No! No! I killed her!" he cries. Echo assures him that "they" killed Cindy. The duo flees.
Later, a harried Perrin enters the hearing and takes his seat. "My wife is dead," he tells the assembled senators and press. "I was looking for a conspiracy and I found something more horrible." He then explains that the Rossum Corporation had been set up by other medical companies -- and that those companies put a bomb in his car that killed Cindy. "There is no dollhouse!" Perrin yells. November is SHOCKED. The press is SHOCKED. Everyone is SHOCKED.
Back at L.A. headquarters, Topher informs Adelle and Boyd that Perrin must still be acting according to Bennett's programming. "So what are you saying -- they're manufacturing a president?" Boyd asks. It would seem that way. Echo, meanwhile, wanders the streets -- a free person once again. But for how long?
