- Senator Daniel Perrin breaks new ground in his attempt to expose the Dollhouse's secrets - by recruiting Madeline/November to testify before a Senate subcommittee. Rossum states that they will handle the situation, leading Ballard and DeWitt to fear for Madeline's safety, so Echo is sent to stop him, in hopes that that will keep Rossum from harming her. But all is not as it appears - Rossum has a hidden agenda, and the tension between the LA Dollhouse and its parent company increases. Meanwhile, in the Washington DC Dollhouse, we meet genius programmer, Bennett Halverson, a woman with a mysterious past connection to Echo/Caroline.—matt-282
- We open with senator Perrin addressing the press, promising to investigate the Rossum Corporation. As he tells it, there is one word synonymous with human trafficking, prostitution and abuses of neural technology: "Dollhouse." November takes the stage to back up Perrin's charges. "They prayed on me when I was at my weakest," she says. Meanwhile, Adelle and Paul wonder how much danger November might be in. "We can't just sit by and let this happen," Paul says. Says Adelle: "She's being used." But by who?
Boyd watches videotape of Perrin with his perfect wife Cindy. Paul, after a bit of research, discovers that Cindy is a Doll. "She's a sleeper," Adelle notes. "Mrs. Perrin is going to be activated when things get too hot." Later, Topher demonstrates his latest toy: an electronic device that can cause any Doll -- even a sleeper -- to go to sleep immediately. "It will knock out any doll in a 10 foot radius," Topher explains to Adelle and Paul. But there's a catch: It will work on November, too. "No one really leaves here, do they?" Paul asks Adelle. Apparently not.
Adelle and Boyd then agree to send Echo out on a mission. Cut to Perrin's suite. Suddenly, the room begins to swim. Something is clearly wrong with the politician. Was it something he drank? He wakes up to discover Echo holding a video camera. "Wake up, senator!" she taunts. "I want to make sure I get your good side." The senator is naked! "Who the hell are you!?" he demands. "You had to have drugged me!" Perrin quickly determines that the mysterious call girl is actually a doll. He takes her to see Cindy. Paul, in the meantime, sneaks into November's apartment. "They're tricking you!" he says. "We have to get out here." But November tries to flee and the pair is soon interrupted by Cindy. Paul triggers the electronic device, but it doesn't affect the senator's wife. "You're NOT a doll!" he gasps. Suddenly, Paul is TACKLED by goons. Flash to the driveway, where Perrin and Echo have just driven up. They're both bleeding from the nose -- thanks to Paul's little toy. "What the hell was that?" Perrin asks. The senator is a Doll!? Yes -- and Cindy the handler.
Cut to Echo and Perrin racing down the road. Just then, Echo experiences FLASHES of an old life, perhaps programmed. "There are gaps, things that aren't filled in," she says. "I'm not real! I'm not who I think I am!" Paul then has FLASHES too. "I think you're a doll like me," Echo says. Meanwhile, Paul is being held captive by Cindy. "Who are you?" he demands. Cindy refuses to answer and instructs her goon to make sure Paul ends up "face down" in a nearby river. Once Cindy exits, however, Paul springs into action. Hands tied together, he manages to beat the heck out of the goon -- and escape!
Back at headquarters, Topher had done a little research and discovers that Perrin is a Doll -- of sorts. Turns out the senator was a no-good playboy for years. So who provided him with such ambition? Before anyone can answer, Echo calls with a question for Adelle concerning the senator: "What did you do to him?" Adelle promises treatment, but Perrin refuses. "You were born Daniel Perrin, but the man you are today is part manufactured," Adelle frantically explains. "Your mind has been altered." In other words, someone is controlling the politician -- probably Cindy. Speak of the devil, the blonde bombshell pulls up in a car -- and then pulls a gun. "We're going back to D.C., so you can forget any of this ever happened," Cindy purrs before smacking Echo across the face. Not a good idea. A furious catfight ensues! It ends with Cindy knocked out cold. Echo convinces Perrin to come with her. "I think her bad guys are badder than my bad guys," she argues. Excellent point.
Later, November emerges from an SUV at the airport only to see Paul approaching. "Who was I?" she demands. Paul explains that he is former FBI. He agreed to work with Dollhouse if they agreed to free Millie. In the end, Paul lets her go. Cut to Echo and Perrin driving down the freeway. Suddenly, they both start screaming in pain. Someone has activated the electronic device! Not surprisingly, it was Cindy, who approaches the stopped vehicle. Back at Dollhouse headquarters, Adelle worries that Perrin or, rather, his handlers will be able to pass whatever legislation they want. So what can Adelle and Boyd to do? "Stop them," Adelle practically hisses.
Cut to a Bennett Halverson of the D.C. Dollhouse. She meets with Cindy, who hands over the electrical device designed by Topher. "My, my my," Bennett whispers to the device. "How do you work?" Cindy warns that they must hurry. Perrin, or their version of him, must get to the hearing to take testimony. But Bennett has other plans first. She approaches Echo, who is strapped to a devious-looking device atop a long table. "Caroline, you always promised you'd come back to me," Bennett says. "Let's play." She then viciously flips a switch -- and Echo shakes in excruciating pain!
