- Chuck's plans to cook dinner for Hannah, Ellie, and Devon are interrupted when he has to pose as an assassin. Sarah vows to keep her relationship with Shaw professional.
- Impressed with Chuck's recent performance, Shaw gives him the lead in a full-danger operation: catching and impersonating mysterious hit-man Rafe Gruber, recruited by the Ring for a yet unspecified killing. Casey gives sniper-cover while Shaw and Sara observe, posing as a couple. Chuck gets the job, but discovers only frightfully late that his target is none other then Shaw, whom he and the Ring duo hiring him spy on, thus learning something about Sara's true identity.—KGF Vissers
- "Chuck" - "Chuck vs. the Fake Name" - March 1, 2010
Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) is worried Chuck (Zachary Levi) kept Hannah (Kristin Kreuk) a secret from her and Devon (Ryan McPartlin) isn't interested in talking about it, saying Chuck asked him to keep it a secret. She worries he and Chuck also seem to be thick as thieves now. He tells her to talk to Chuck. So she goes over to Chuck's house, hears the shower running and talks to the door saying she understands why Chuck might not have told her but promises to be a good secret keeper. And, of course, out walks Hannah grateful to hear it. Chuck arrives with donuts. Awkward. He introduces Hannah to Ellie as a "girl" who is a "friend," a very close friend. Hannah goes to get dressed and Chuck apologizes to Ellie and to make it up to her he says she and Devon should come over for a get to know Hannah dinner for which he'll make his famous chicken pepperoni.
Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) and Shaw (Brandon Routh) are having lunch. She says she thinks they shouldn't see each other outside of work, a kind of pre-emptive break-up since she always dates her co-workers and it always ends badly. He's disappointed but understands. Turns out they're on an op, however. Their bad guy arrives, insults the valet, and is promptly taken out by a tranq from the gun of sniper Casey (Adam Baldwin), from a nearby building.
They bring him back to the castle. Turns out he's Rafe Gruber (Johnny Messner), admired sniper assassin who can take out a target from a half a mile. The Ring recently wired him $1 million. In order to find out who his next target is, the plan is to have Chuck assume his identity.
Shaw and Sarah explain/warn Chuck about the dangers/problems of assuming an alias, how he has to lie and react as the alias, not himself. Chuck thinks he can do it but thinks he'll need some intel. As Casey is about to torture info out of Rafe, Chuck starts asking him questions: how did he get into the mercenary life? What was his toughest hit? Rafe says he would prefer torture. Chuck mimics his gravelly voice and gets an opportunity to use it moments later when Rafe's Ring phone rings. Chuck gets instructions on where to meet the people who will give him the instructions on who his next target is.
Over at the Buy More Jeff (Scott Krinsky) and Lester (Vik Sahay) are marveling at Chuck's prowess with the ladies when Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence) announces they got an overshipment of crock pots. In order to sell them he wants someone to make gumbo, thereby releasing pleasant odors enticing people to buy. He drafts Jeff and Lester. Chuck asks Casey for a "hard out" at five from the mission so he can get home to make dinner. Casey, reasonably, scoffs at this.
Sarah is tightening up Rafe's shackles prior to departure when he starts talking smack about Shaw and how he looks at Sarah. Rafe says Shaw's a wussy and that he would take care of Sarah right. She gives him an extra tighten for that remark. For good measure, Shaw comes in and clocks him.
Chuck and Hannah make out at the Buy More and he tells her he will pick her up for dinner later.
It turns out that Rafe was set to meet with mobsters - played by (Tony Sirico) and (Louis Lombardi) (Paulie Walnuts and Skip Lipari from "The Sopranos") at an Italian restaurant.
Chuck brings Casey as his associate and as Chuck and the mobsters banter - with Chuck doing a good job of impersonating a bad-ass assassin- Paulie Walnuts keeps saying he knows Casey from somewhere. He finally puts his finger on it: he looks like a sniper he served in the armed forces with named Alexander Coburn. (Chuck flashes on the name and we see the regular array of images except the face is redacted.) So naturally the mobsters think he's a cop. Stalling for time. Chuck says if he's a cop he'll kill him himself and whacks Casey in the face with a gun. He ties him to a chair and threatens him as Sarah and Shaw call out the cavalry. It's taking a while, though, so Chuck is forced to pull out one of Casey's teeth with a set of pliers to prove to the mobsters he means business. He is horrified of course but Casey eggs him on and they pull it off. Casey is clearly impressed with Chuck.
The cops bust in and one pins Chuck down on the bar. It's Sarah and he talks about how relieved he is to see her. She says he's supposed to be a badass so he has to fight back. He flashes on his kung fu and takes out the whole S.W.A.T. team and he and the mobsters get away, they are suitably impressed by him.
Back at the castle Casey tells Chuck that Sarah and Shaw went to his house to make dinner since Chuck didn't have time to do it himself. He tells Chuck he's proud of him and saved him a trip to the dentist since the tooth he pulled had a cavity. Two agents are hauling Rafe off and he is struggling. They slap his head against a table where he eyes a Buy More pen. Chuck asks about "Alexander Coburn" and Casey tells him to mind his own business.
Chuck picks up Hannah and again Jeff and Lester, and this time also Big Mike, marvel at his way with the ladies. But, Jeff points out, no matter how many women Chuck has dated, Sarah was the real thing.
Sarah and Shaw are putting the finishing touches on Chuck's dinner when they hear them arrive. They skedaddle as Chuck, Hannah, Ellie, and Devon enter. Everyone is impressed with Chuck's dinner especially since he worked that day. Chuck asks Devon to help him with the wine and when he tries to vent to the one person who knows his secret about his day and how he didn't make dinner, Devon says he doesn't want to know because lying to Ellie makes him uncomfortable. Chuck understands. At dinner, Ellie compliments his cooking, saying for years she told him she liked his chicken pepperoni but was always lying, this time she means it. Hannah makes a toast to good timing and things lining up in life: right job, right boy, etc. She says she feels she is where she's supposed to be and she thanks them for that.
Sarah watches this wistfully on the monitor at the castle. Shaw brought back some of the chicken they made at Chuck's but Sarah demurs.
Turns out Rafe grabbed that Buy More pen and easily undid his cuffs, escaping his captors.
The next day at the Buy More Chuck is looking at Rafe's Ring phone when Hannah walks up. He claims it's a store phone, a new one they're letting him mess with. She asks him to come dinner with her parents. She knows it's soon but feels like things are going well. He says okay.
When Big Mike calls him over to test the gumbo the phone rings and Hannah answers. Chuck sees this and comes running over. She says she told them it was a wrong number but they said they were on their way over. Realizing it's the mobsters, Chuck rushes out to meet them on the loading dock. He's about to call Sarah on his watch but they arrive, grab the watch and smash it. Not because they realize what it is but because it's a cheap watch and they've gotten him a nice gold one to replace it for saving their hides. They also have the location of "Rafe's" next hit.
They go to a house a half mile from the Hotel Roosevelt. They have set up a sniper rifle and listening device on the target. It's Shaw. Chuck puts on the headphones and can hear everything that's happening in the room, which is this:
Sarah goes to vist Shaw in his room. He arrives at the door shirtless, fresh out of the shower. She is distracted by this and asks him to put on some clothes. She's come to apologize. He says it's not necessary. He asks her if he's bothered by the Chuck-Hannah thing. She says that's not the change bothering her. It's watching Chuck become a good spy that's bumming her out. She feels like she's watching him disappear and that is making her more desperate to remember who she really is, who she was before all of this this. She says she's never even told anyone her real name, not even Chuck. (We watch Chuck being hurt by all of this). Shaw asks what it is. She says it's "Sam." Shaw kisses her.
Back with the mobsters, Chuck is distraught and explains, as much as he can, that that's his girl and there have always been obstacles to their happiness. They think this is even more reason to take Shaw out. Chuck says he needs to do it face to face.
As he rushes over, leaving his jacket with the Ring phone in it behind, Rafe and Casey both get a GPS lock on Chuck's location.
Chuck goes to Shaw's room and pretends to rough him up, noting quietly they are being watched. Sarah is confused.
Gruber arrives at the mobster's locale and shoots them. He looks through the sniper's rifle and sees Chuck and Shaw tussling.
He heads over and joins the fray taking out Sarah, then Shaw, then Chuck. As everyone regroups, Gruber grabs Sarah and holds a gun to her head. Both Shaw and Chuck loudly protest. Gruber points out everyone's got it bad for the blonde. Just as it seems he's about to shoot her, Casey takes him out with the sniper's rifle from half a mile away, impressed with his own skills.
Later Chuck goes to talk to Ellie, telling her he feels like he's living a lie. She says she thinks she may know what he means: he likes Hannah but he's moving too fast with her since he still has feelings for Sarah. Chuck realizes this is true and calls Ellie a half a spy, and a good one at that.
Shaw and Sarah work at the castle and suddenly she takes off.
Chuck goes to meet Hannah and her parents at dinner and he pulls her aside. He tells her he really likes her but he has to end it because she deserves someone she can know completely. She can't believe she slept with him the night before and now he's dumping her. She says he is the best liar she's ever seen and hopes his lies keep him warm at night. Chuck is sad.
Sarah returns to the castle. Since Shaw's cover's been blown, she says he'll be stuck there awhile so she brought him a crock pot and Chinese take out. He thanks her and calls her Sam. They kiss.
