That's why I like Supernatural so much
marypink8715 November 2009
I actually liked this episode. It was both innovative and old fashioned, as it gave up a glance to the old hunts we've been used in the first seasons. Only a show like Supernatural could put its main characters into a convention of the show itself! I figure this episode as a sort of "direct line" with the authors, with them telling the watchers their point of view, as a way to express their concern about the show developing the best way.

The thing I like the most about Supernatural is that I've never felt the urge to make things go in a different way, just like writing fan fiction, I never sensed I would be able to develop better the plot if I were an author; I really like the story and I don't think that if the show is really going to end next year, they will ever jump the shark!

Silly but Funny Episode
claudio_carvalho16 February 2012
Dean and Sam receive a text message from Chuck asking them to come asap in the Pinewood Hotel. Once there, they discover that they had been lured by the number 1 fan, Becky Rosen that uses Chuck's cell phone to bring the Winchester brothers to a Supernatural Convention.

Dean and Sam realize that their fans are dressed just like them and driving Chevy Impalas 1967. During a RPG, Dean and Sam discovers that the hotel is haunted by the ghost of Leticia Gore, the director of an orphanage that killed four children including her own son. Dean and Sam seek out her bones with two other fans, and when she is destroyed, they discover that the legend was not correct and now everybody is trapped in the hotel and threatened by the real menace.

"The Real Ghostbusters" is a silly but funny episode of Supernatural totally out of the context of the Apocalypse of the Fifth Season. The references to the real Dean and Sam by their fans are hilarious. The conclusion with the lead that Sam gets from Becky about where the Colt might be is probably the only connection with the storyline of the Fifth Season. My vote is eight.

The most irritating episode ever, and as fine as every other Supernatural episode..
Angelus215 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I don't usually comment on 'single' episodes, rather the show as a whole, but I was compelled to say something about this episode.

Dean and Sam are lured by Becky the 'crazy fan' to a 'Supernatural' convention and Chuck is there too, as well as every other die hard Supernatural fan. But there is something else as well...The ghosts of children who aren't very friendly...

I found this episode to be truly irritating as the 'fake' versions of Sam and Dean constantly interfered, or simply said something annoying. But, I began to understand what it must feel like for the characters if it was real life...

The episode itself was nothing short of spectacular, it was funny and witty with some great references to past episodes...

perfect proof why serious shows shouldn't always take themselves too seriously
whatthenursesaid12 November 2009
continuing with this season's phenomenal quality, this episode proved the writers of supernatural know what they're doing. and that they've been listening to their fans.

the basic premise of this episode is a bit lame, yes. dean and sam are tricked by their uber fan, becky, to attend a convention commemorating their own lives and while there, discover the bogus ghost hunt put on by the fans is more fact than fiction. but that doesn't mean this episode is pure genius.

first of all, this episode was hilarious. with loads of inside jokes, from calling upon the "homoerotic tension" between the brothers, to mocking how "supernatural makes grave digging look so easy," along with numerous dorky larpers trying their hardest to act the parts of dean and sam, and failing miserably and fantastically despite quoting the boys exactly from different scenes throughout the series, the humor of this episode is guaranteed to make any supernatural fan howl with squealing laughter. this episode is a perfect example for why serious shows should occasionally take the time to chill, and possibly make fun of themselves in the process.

however, despite the hysterical nature of most of this episode, it still managed to maintain a serious edge to it. during this episode, the brothers, dean in particular, had a chance to look at their lives through the eyes of their fans. it's well known by anyone who has watched this show that sam and dean are none too pleased to be living the life dealt to them. they have to carry more miserable and back breaking burdens than any normal human should. a normal person would go insane in their position. yet even still, there are fans who want to be them and the brothers can't understand it. but in this episode, two fans reveal to them why they are people to be looked upon with admiration, and even jealousy, and finally, they get it.

another great aspect of this episode: we haven't had a regular hunt episode in quite some time. the closest was the previous episode dealing with the trickster, but nothing involving the trickster winds up regular. it was good to have fight something that could be held back with just a bit of salt and iron. also, the plot twist near the end of the episode will definitely surprise you.

also, a very crucial bit of the plot was revealed within this episode. guess it's not just in fanfiction that people noticed how useful fans could be for sam and dean.

this episode was a true master piece. hilarious, yet oddly serious, supernatural reminds the fans once again why we love it so damn much. definite 10/10.

I feel that everyone who criticized the show about its silly episodes are wrong. It's whats making g the show last for 13 seasons. The behind the scene clips of Dean singing " eye of the tiger", "imaginary friend", "the real ghostbusters", etc. The writers have active imaginations that are creative including fun to watch. If it was all seriousness. Then it won't be fun to watch. Their really Talented writers. Name one other show that has the same or similar quirkiness.

Back To The Old Days.
lennonwhitee13 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Let's be honest here, season four and the beginning of five had sucked, and the last chapters have been a little disappointing, especially "the curious case of Dean Winchester", maybe they are trying to calm down the apocalypse part, but the plot is irrelevant. But "The Real Ghostsbusters" didn't disappoint, at all. It actually exceeded my expectations! I suppose it was the traditional hunt we all remember from seasons 1 + 2. The kind of old hotel, the ghost, unexpected twist and flirty Dean. In fact, it was so season 1 and 2 I expected the traditional back in black and them in the Impala. Please, don't doubt watching this as it is a breath of fresh air from the apocalypse and the recent dumb humor.

It straddles the line between including fans and mocking them.
CubsandCulture18 March 2020
This is probably the episodes most damaged and changed by the later revelations around Chuck. Everything involving his character plays a lot darker now; this episode lovingly poked fun at some of the excesses of the fan culture but now it plays with ever so subtle mockery of the hardcore fans. It is hard to see Damien and Barnes as anything but objects of derision. It feels more like mocking their queer fans they including them in some way. It is a pity because this use to be a near perfect meta episode. Now we are left wondering where the laughing *with* stops and the laughing *at* begins.

Nice episode...waste of time for the series...
evilized_soul18 November 2009
This episode was hilarious, why? It's simple: Supernatural fan convention, and that includes:

-parkinglot full of '67 Impala Chevy's

-bunch of douche-bags dressed up like, using same words like...Dean and Sam

But...it get's better as the two Winchesters find out that there's an actual hunting...and they do the hunting very old-school(seasons 1 and 2 like)diggin',salt, gasoline and lighter...all that with a little help from some Sam and Dean wannabes.

Oh by the way you should watch this episode for that crucial information Sam gets...

Anyway, what i really want to say is that this kind of episodes are here just to fill in the season because the writers routined us with seasons of 22 episodes and perhaps they could end this season in 3 eps but tending to respect the rule they're draggin it with episodes like this. And they usually tend to reveal only one information, for example:

In "The curious case of Dean Winchester"-what Bobby looks for

In "Changing Channels"-who the Trickster is...

Or now-where that "particular item" they're searchin' for might be...

"Rise and shine Sammy! Rise and shine..."

Life lessons
zombiehigh185 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The first time I saw this, I thought "Supernatural team just sat together saying " OK Why not make an episode to make the boys appreciate their lives, appreciate each other and give them a tip about the long lost Colt while we put them on an ordinary ghost hunt and why not make fun of our selves as well as the conventions and the stupid complaining die hard fans"" I wasn't very excited about this episode and I kept thinking is this how Supernatural team saw their fans?

However since I happen to be some kind of book warm, reading hundreds of stories my self, I learned there are always two sides to every story if not more. There is always a hidden meaning and a lesson to be taught if we are keen enough to learn. Supernatural was supposed to be a show about two brothers hitting the roads hunting ghosts and evil things that come out in the dark yet it had taught us lessons about family, love, loyalty, faith, destiny, free will as well as lessons about pain, regret, betrayal and guilt. Supernatural has taken us over the seasons on an exquisite journey about being humans.

Watching this I was confused what lesson were we supposed to learn here? Are they telling us how much real life sucks or Is it a lesson about appreciating what we already have? Are they asking us to stop complaining too much or are they telling us that what you might hate some one else might find it utterly brilliant? Are they telling us how much it hurts others when other people dwell into their private lives or is it OK to look up to some one? Or were we supposed to learn all those lessons and more?

May be it is not on my favourite episode list, it was still fun to watch. I always enjoyed watching a standard salt and burn ghost hunt and creepy little children stories. It's nice for the boys to meet others who make them see the bright side of their dark world.

This show has got to stop making fun of itself
chillax6914 November 2009
This episode is just another in a series of bad, self mocking, silly episodes. I can understand 1 or 2 of these scattered throughout the season, and it would be understandable to have 1 of these jokey episodes after such serious, stark episodes that preceded these. So far though, most of the episodes this season have been these inconsequential, comedic, crap episodes. When they are the butts of a big joke, like this "supernatural convention" in praise of Sam and Dean, this kind of outlandish silly humor just takes me right out of it. Give me Macabre, give me evil, give me dark and scary, but not a self deprecating travesty like this "the Real Ghostbusters" "changing Channels" or "Curious Case of Dean Winchester". Hopefully Supernatural will get back to its over-arching, dramatic and suspenseful main story line and we can stop wasting time ad my attention on buffoonery. This show was really strong for a while there and I love the apocalyptic story arch, hope you can get back to business guys, get back to the scary.
