"Who is The Clapper?" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie comedy titled The Clapper, the latest from director Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Fighting, The Son of No One, Man Down). The Clapper is about a man, played by Ed Helms, who enjoys his job to be paid to fill seats in infomercial audiences. But when a talk late night TV talk show host discovers and makes fun of him, his whole life gets turned upside-down. Very weird concept for a film, but this trailer actually makes it look kind of amusing, with a sweet side. The cast includes Amanda Seyfried, Tracy Morgan, P.J. Byrne, Charles Halford, and Leah Remini. This probably isn't what you're expecting, but doesn't look too bad. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dito Montiel's The Clapper, direct from YouTube: Eddie is a guy who gets paid...

Over a decade ago, Dito Montiel made a well received indie movie, “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints,” but ever since has largely been failing upwards. A string of movies have followed, that find him working with decent names (Dwayne Johnson, Shia Labeouf, Kate Mara, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Juliette Binoche) but all them have failed critically or commercially or both (“The Son Of No One,” “Empire State,” “Boulevard,” “Man Down“).

Writer/director Dito Montiel broke out with “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” a decade ago, but ever since, he’s struggled to inspire the same acclaim. This state of affairs is certainly not due to lack of talent who have signed up to work with him, including folks like Al Pacino and Juliette Binoche in “The Son Of No One,” Channing Tatum for multiple film (‘Saints,’ ‘No One,’ and “Fighting“) and even Dwayne Johnson (“Empire State“).

Looking ahead to the movies heading to cinemas in time for Christmas...
The festive season is a great time to go to the pictures. There’s nothing quite like taking solace when it’s cold outside by cramming in with some like-minded folk to see a (hopefully) great movie.
Unsurprisingly, Hollywood studios have cottoned on to this. Year on year, there seems to more and more choice at the cinema come Christmas time. It’s almost like a second summer season, in terms of the sheer volume of major movies on offer. This isn’t likely to change any time soon, especially when you look at the cash banked by Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Christmas. And that's not to mention the festive season's nearness to the Oscar race, which means that the major movies keep coming well into January.

The Charming Potato is joining the cast of Kingsman: The Golden Circle! I remember the moment Channing Tatum clicked for me. It certainly wasn’t on first exposure. Sometimes I see an actor and immediately like what they’re doing, and when I saw A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, it was with some early hype about both the director, Dito Montiel, and this amazing new young star, Channing Tatum. Didn’t work for me at all. He was fine in the Step Up films, but that’s because the dancing was front and center. Films like Dear John or Stop-Loss did nothing to change my opinion of Tatum, and in a few cases, like G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra or The Eagle, I thought his presence actually damaged the overall movie. For me, the first sign that he might actually be worth paying attention to was The Dilemma,...

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

[Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of Indie Film Month. Today's pick, "The Humbling," is available now On Demand. This interview originally ran during last year's Sundance Film Festival.] It's indisputable that Al Pacino is one of the greatest screen actors of all time. Still, even the greats sometimes deliver a turkey. The actor experienced a rough patch from 2005 to 2012, during which he appeared in a number of critically panned films, including "The Son of No One" and "Jack and Jill." But over the last two years he's turned it around to deliver two performances that harken back to his best work: David Gordon Green's "Manglehorn" and Barry Levinson's "The Humbling," both of which premiered on the festival circuit late last year. In "The Humbling," which recently opened in theaters and is available to view on video on demand...

Al Pacino is an acting legend who has starred in some truly great movies... but he's also been in some less-than-spectacular flicks. So how can you know ahead of time whether an Al Pacino movie will be Classic Cinema or just a Pacino Paycheck? We’re working on a formula that will allow us to plug in some numbers and arrive at a conclusion, and here’s what we have so far.
Heat
Looking at the variables in this equation, it seems like Heat could have been a miss. It might not have been a sure thing, but it's definitely one of the best cat-and-mouse cop movies to hit theaters. It's Certified Fresh by Rotten Tomatoes and is a classic '90s crime drama.
Jack and Jill
At a glance, we'd assume an Al Pacino working with a comedian and a director who together regularly spin box office gold would result in something pretty terrific.

See Channing Tatum go rogue this Saturday on Reelz
It's exciting to watch TV shows and movies where the police officers doggedly pursue every lead and put together a by-the-book, airtight case to bring the bad guys to justice. But, it's often far more thrilling to watch the exploits of cops who toss the book out the window and go rogue in pursuit of justice. Sometimes cops go rogue because they work in a corrupt department, but usually they're just guys who know that they can't get the job done by playing by the rules.
What we want to know is which movie has the best rogue cop. Turn on your police scanner, grab a donut and help us choose the movie cops who make going rogue look good. For more rogue-cop action, be sure to watch Son of No One starring Channing Tatum Saturday on Reelz at 8p Et/ 5p Pt.

We tend to look for patterns, trends and whatnot with our annual predictions. In Dito Montiel’s case, it would appear that he shows up at the fest with odd numbered films in his filmography. Sundance embraced the filmmaker-musician-author with open arms back on 2006 with the double Sundance winner totally engrossing dramatic book to film translation of A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. His third film, The Son of No One (which is sandwiched by Fighting (’09) and 2013′s Empire State) received the closing night honors of the fest back in 2011. For Boulevard (film number five), Montiel reteams with his longtime editor Jake Pushinsky and landed Park Chan-wook’s cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung. Shot in Nashville, Robin Williams toplines the drama which wrapped in mid July. Feast your eyes on our exclusive first look below.

There’s a very good chance that you’ve seen Empire State already. Perhaps not with these characters, but I’m willing to bet you’ve seen a number of heist films that are exactly like it and which tell the story with more flair and excitement. Forget that this is supposedly based on a true story (by now you should be well aware of what that really means). When that story has already been seen in countless films, that should immediately make the filmmakers ask themselves “Do we really need to tell it again, just with different characters?” Apparently they thought they had something great on their hands, but the studio saw exactly what was happening and, not deeming it worthy of a theatrical release, decided to dump it straight to Blu-Ray and DVD. At least somebody had an objective viewpoint of the project.

Empire State is based on the true story of one of the biggest heists in U.S. history, and what better way to celebrate today.s big VOD release for the film than to hear from one of the guys originally behind the big heist? In the exclusive clip, heist master Chris Potamitis.one of the real men behind the 1982 crime.explains how he first got the job at the Empire State security firm, and how it just so happened that he grew nosy while working there. Empire State was directed by Dito Montiel, the man behind the film A Guide To Recognizing your Saints. His last film, The Son of No One didn.t do so well theatrically, and Lionsgate Home Entertainment opted to put Empire State on a VOD release schedule, with a Blu-ray and DVD release following next Tuesday, September 3. Just because the film is hitting VOD...

We recently told you that Lionsgate decided to dump its "Empire State" film straight to DVD, despite the fact that it has a cast comprised of Dwayne Johnson, Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) And Emma Roberts. And now, we have a trailer for the movie. Watch it below. "Empire State" focuses on two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, and the NYPD officer who stands in their way. It co-stars Nikki Reed, James Ransone and Michael Angarano. The new movie is directed by Dito Montiel (Fighting, The Son of No One) and is set to be released on DVD and Blu-ray on September 3rd. First, some background: back in 2011, director Dito Montiel hit Sundance with his Al Pacino and Channing Tatum starring cop flick "The Son Of No One," that depending on who you ask, was so bad it prompted a sea of walkouts or had a botched screening thanks to a projectionist error. Either way, the movie was not well received at Park City or otherwise, and so Montiel dusted himself off, and made another cop movie with Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth. No brainer to work right? Um, not so fast... The first sign of trouble is with the words, "From the director of Fighting" -- which might cause people to ask: what is "Fighting"? (It was a 2009 street fighting movie with Tatum and Terrence Howard, duh). The next sign of trouble is everything else in this confusingly cut trailer for the movie, which stars Johnson as a cop hunting down regular schlub Hemsworth,...

Once in a while, Hollywood's top actors team up for movie that ends up going straight to video or at best gets a very limited theatrical release. This happened before with "The Son of No One," which starred Al Pacino and Channing Tatum. It was written and directed by Dito Montiel (Fighting, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), who is now back with "Empire State," once again securing top actors like Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth (Hunger Games). Unfortunately, Lionsgate is not very happy with the result, deciding to skip the theaters and dump it straight to video on September 3rd. "Empire State" focuses on two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, and the NYPD officer who stands in their way. It co-stars Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed, James Ransone and Michael Angarano.

Despite names like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Liam Hemsworth, and Emma Roberts starring, Lionsgate have opted to forgo a theatrical release and bring the action drama "Empire State" directly to Blu-ray and DVD on September 3rd.
Dito Montiel's drama follows two childhood friends who plan to rob an armored car depository, and the NYPD officer who stands in their way.
This marks another blow for Montiel following his cop drama "The Son of No One" starring Channing Tatum, Al Pacino and Juliette Binoche. Following a disastrous screening at Sundance, the film banked only a few thousand dollars in theaters.

David Gordon Green’s productivity amazes me. Not only is he promoting Prince Avalanche while wrapping up production on Joe (starring Nicolas Cage), but he’s also begun planning his newest film Manglehorn, and he wants Academy Award-winning actor and industry legend Al Pacino as the lead. The film would tell the story of an ex-con living in anonymity while nursing his sick cat and slowly falling into a dull routine, but his tranquility is eventually threatened when he’s unmasked as a man with a dark past.
Al Pacino’s career is at an all-time low. His latest movies make little effort to showcase his wonderful acting skills — Stand Up Guys barely made a passing grade, The Son of No One was laughable, and nobody is willing to accept the fact that Jack and Jill even exists (except Adam Sandler, of course). Nevertheless, I still enjoy Pacino quite a bit.

Stand Up Guys
Directed by: Fisher Stevens
Starring: Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Alan Arkin
Rating: R
Release Date: January 11, 2013
Trailer Score: 8/10
Thoughts by Tsr: Turns out that this is not, in fact, a film where Al Pacino and Christopher Walken play rival stand-up comedians. I’ll admit that is a little disappointing, but the melancholic undercurrent found throughout this trailer for Stand Up Guys is appealing. I didn’t know what to expect from this, though I did assume it would be more of a straight comedy full of wacky old guy hijinks. While there is some amusing stuff here, such as Alan Arkin having trouble with the future car, the stuff that works best is the sadness and the great cast in the middle of it.
And this does have a great cast, even if Al Pacino and Christopher Walken haven’t lately been delivering the level of work...

10 Years
Directed by: Jamie Linden

Rating: PG-13
Release Date: September 14, 2012
Trailer Score: 7/10
Thoughts by Tsr: As this trailer began and we were introduced to the likes of Channing Tatum, Oscar Isaac, Justin Long, and Chris Pratt, I was impressed that first-time director Jamie Linden managed to land such names. Then it continued and I was blown away to also see Kate Mara, Aubrey Plaza, Lynn Collins, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Geraghty (the latter two making a very welcome The Hurt Locker reunion). I’m not convinced 10 Years will completely live up to the tremendous cast, but this trailer makes it look like they will keep it charming and likeable throughout.
Chris Pratt being in a film with Channing Tatum is something that makes a lot of sense to me. I loved their few moments together, particularly Pratt saying Tatum got fat. The reunion...

New York -- If you want to get a good idea of Katie Holmes, actress – as opposed to tabloid star – you can't do any better than "Pieces of April," a gem from 2003 in which she plays a ponytailed and tattooed New Yorker desperately trying to prove herself to her visiting suburban family with an improvised, downtown Thanksgiving dinner.
This was back when Holmes was transitioning out of "Dawson's Creek," that teenage soap of a fictional New England coastal town childhood. But Holmes had already amassed an early filmography that any young actress would envy, including "The Ice Storm," "Go" and "Wonder Boys."
The budget for "Pieces of April" started at $6 million, but dwindled to $300,000 and was shot over just 16 days. Writer-director Peter Hedges recalls shooting in "condemnable" buildings with paint dropping off the walls of Holmes' makeshift dressing room.

First-Look At Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in Indie Heist Thriller 'Empire State' (Based On True Story)
Back in January of this year, Tambay announced Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's attachment to the heist flick Empire State. The film, which also stars Liam Hemsworth, Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed and Michael Angarano, is based on true events that took place in 1982. The unbelievably busy Johnson plays "Ransone," an NYPD officer who tries to prevent a car depository robbery orchestrated by Liam Hemsworth's character and his childhood friend. Empire State is written by Adam Mazer (Breach, HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack) and directed by Dito Montiel (Fighting, The Son Of No One). The film is set to hit theaters June 10, 2013. Take a look at the...

Well, if Dito Montiel is an example of anything, it's of that famous old saying: when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. It was about a year and a half ago that the director endured savage reviews at Sundance for "The Son Of No One," his procedural starring a promising cast of Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche and more that ultimately wound up getting a cursory release before disappearing onto home video. But he's dusted himself off and gotten another film on the way, "Empire State," and the first two images of the film's stars, Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson, have emerged.
Penned by Adam Mazer ("Breach," "You Don't Know Jack"), the thriller is based around the real-life robbery of the Sentry Armored Car Company in 1982; an $11.4 million haul that, at the time, was the biggest cash robbery in U.S. history. Some good source material indeed, and...

I’ve never even heard of “Empire State” until now. Go figure. The film stars Liam Hemsworth (younger brother of Chris, aka Thor of “The Avengers”) and Dwayne Johnson (formerly of The Rock), and “tells the true story of two pals in the 1980s who stole all the money stored at an armored car company.” It’s also about the cop who tries to stop them (I’m guessing he fails, judging by the logline above), and being that Johnson and Hemsworth are probably too wide apart age-wise, and Johnson is wearing a badge around his neck, I’m going to go out on a limb and say Johnson is the cop who tries to stop Hemsworth from his nefarious scheme. The film is currently being directed by Dito Montiel, who last helmed the Channing Tatum cop flick “The Son of No One”, and before that the Channing Tatum fighting...

No matter how up or down his career is, director Dito Montiel always seems to be pushing forward on his next film. The Guide to Recognizing Your Saints helmer is bouncing back from last year’s mega-bomb Al Pacino and Channing Tatum drama The Son of No One, with a new heist film, Empire State.
Already deep into production, the Adam Mazer-scripted, true-life tale, follows “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Dwayne Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” Some photos of stars Liam Hemsworth, Emma Roberts and Nikki Reed have been circling on various outlets and can be seen above, but now Johnson has shared what looks to be the first official still on Twitter. Check it out below, featuring Johnson deep into action mode, for the film also starring Michael Angarano, Jerry Ferrara and Chris Diamantopoulos.

Is there anything better than Nicolas Cage playing an unhinged dude who will stop at nothing to achieve personal justice? In Roger Donaldson‘s Seeking Justice, Cage does just that after his wife (January Jones) is brutally attacked and he’s offered support by Guy Pearce, a mysterious stranger with his own aims and secrets. As you can likely expect, they’re not selfless aims and they’re not fluffy secrets. With Seeking Justice hitting DVD and Blu-ray next week, we’re excited to offer a very special Blu-ray prize pack filled with films that all tap right into the themes of the Cage-starrer. Dirty cops. Rating: R
Release Date: June 29, 2012

Thoughts by Tsr: I never have a definitive answer when it comes to my favorite director, but one name that always springs to mind is Steven Soderbergh. He can bounce between genres better than most, one of many things I love about him. A male stripper movie isn’t necessarily something I’d expect, even from Soderbergh, but nothing the director of Schizopolis does should ever be a complete surprise.
One thing that is a bit of a surprise is that it looks like a (relatively charming) romantic comedy. I didn’t expect that, but I do suspect this non-red band trailer is leaving out some of the more, well, interesting aspects the film has to offer. Whether or not the rom-com ends up being the primary focus, I do...

The are few works that have been more revered and adapted than "The Seagull" by Anton Chekhov. The Russian master's play, written over 100 years ago, still forms the basis for countless new stage iterations -- both professional and amateur -- inspired a ballet and an opera, but oddly enough, has never had a splashy big-screen version. Until now.

To be wholly honest, the announcement of Dito Montiel‘s newest feature passed over my head so swiftly that, only a little over two months later, this item feels like the big reveal. (You’ll have to pardon my insolence and understand that The Son of No One does not encourage nor warrant further attention.) Anyway, Variety reports that Emma Roberts will take a role in the Fighting helmer’s next feature, Empire State, putting her in company with Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) and Dwayne Johnson.
Early January’s aforementioned announcement told us that they were signed for an Adam Mazer-scripted, true-life tale, which follows “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” (Hemsworth is playing one of these friends, named Chris; the other part still needs to be cast.)
