The phone call in the beginning of the film is based on the September 11th 1997 call to the radio show coast to coast with Art Bell. The frantic caller claimed to be an ex-employee of Area 51 and warned of a government conspiracy involving extra dimensional beings.
Lunopolis was filmed in 2008-2009, and is often credited as being among the first film projects to theorize (and explain) what is now known as the "Mandela Effect", where people share alternate memories of things that seemingly do not exist. The character David James was inspired largely by Steven Fishman, an American former Scientologist whose inclusion of Scientology's secret Operating Thetan levels in a court filing led to the first public confirmation by the Church of Scientology of its doctrines regarding Xenu and the Wall of Fire. This film was made on a budget of less than five thousand dollars, utilizing unpaid actors, friends and family. The small crew often showed up on location unannounced, filming scenes quickly before being kicked out. Many scenes of the dark underground area were filmed in the middle of the night at an unused stadium accessible through one unlocked door. The filmmakers were eventually confronted by security but allowed to continue after claiming they were participating in a 48-hour film contest and didn't have time to clear location rights.
