- Chuck is taken off active duty when he has problems trying to use the Intersect and is put in imminent danger without Sarah's and Casey's help.
- Due to stress preventing Chuck from 'flashing', the Intersect is temporarily sidetracked. Devon seizes the opportunity for a holiday, a 'belated honeymoon' in Mexico. Then the team finds out a bearded Ring killer is after the Intersect, but due to Devon's part in a previous incident thinks it's the surgeon. - "Chuck" - "Chuck vs. the Beard" - March 8, 2010
At the Castle Chuck (Zachary Levi) arrives and is handed a folder with intel saying the Ring is trying to turn a CIA agent against them. He looks at pics but doesn't flash. In fact, he hasn't flashed in over a week and Shaw (Brandon Routh) is sidelining him until he flashes again. Chuck protests. Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski) says maybe time off would be good. Chuck points out he's full of tough emotions after his break-up with Hannah and (unspoken - Sarah is falling for Shaw) and his inability to talk to any of his friends or family about it. They offer to let him unload to them. Chuck declines saying that won't work for him. Shaw tells him to find something that works for him, until then he's benched.
So Chuck decides to call Awesome (Ryan McPartlin), the one person who knows what's going on. Awesome however, is on an awesome romantic beach vacation with Ellie (Sarah Lancaster) and wants no part of Chuck's messy spy or personal life.
At the Buy More Morgan (Joshua Gomez) calls Chuck into his office to have an awkward conversation. He asks him what's going on in his life, he broke up with Hannah and she quit the Buy More and Chuck isn't being best friend-y with the information. Chuck asks if he really wants to know what's going on. Morgan says he does. Chuck tries to spill but he can't. Morgan fires him, not from the Buy More, but as his best friend.
Chuck goes back to the Castle and the gang tells him the mission, which doesn't include him, is to go to a hotel where the potential double agent is staying. Chuck apologizes for still not flashing. Chuck says the team is a man down without him. Shaw says he's taking Chuck's place. Chuck points out the Ring knows Shaw is alive. He says he doesn't care and is willing to bring the fight. Sarah slides on an engagement- the cover is Shaw and Sarah are engaged- and they take off. Chuck asks what he should do. Casey (Adam Baldwin) suggests working his day job.
Lester (Vik Sahay), Jeff (Scott Krinsky), and Morgan are eavesdropping outside Big Mike's office. His door opens and two guys in suits walk out chuckling with Big Mike (Mark Christopher Lawrence). Someone is considering buying the Buy More and they're closing for the day so the potential owners can evaluate the staff and fire anyone who's not essential. Big Mike determines they're all in trouble.
Shaw and Sarah check into the hotel and set up surveillance equipment as Casey monitors stuff from the van.
The Buy More quintet promises to stick together through this evaluation, all for one and one for all.
Lester is called in and immediately tries to spill dirt but first asks for immunity.
Big Mike says the staff may be scary but he raves about Chuck and says he, Big Mike, is a people person.
Morgan is freaking out about the interview and doesn't want to talk to Chuck about it since they're no longer best friends. Chuck tries to reassure Morgan he can always get another job. Morgan says maybe Chuck, with his Standford degree, can but he can't.
Chuck is called in and asked essentially why he's there given his credentials. He says there's more opportunity here than meets the eye, like getting to work with his best friend Morgan. They wonder why Chuck isn't the assistant manager and he says because Morgan is the right guy for the job and Morgan is the cream of the Buy More crop even though he, Chuck, looks good on paper.
At the hotel, Casey tries to trace a Ring call being made from the hotel. He, Shaw, and Sarah overhear the call being made and she grabs binocs looking for "the target" in a blue and white bathing suit and finds... Awesome. (I guess Ellie and Awesome didn't go far.)
Chuck's interview ends amicably. After he walks out one of the interviewers -played by from Diedrich Bader, Oswald on "The Drew Carey Show" - pulls out a Ring phone and tells the others to get in there. The other interviewer wonders if Oswald really thinks Chuck is "Agent Carmichael." He says he is and Shaw left him behind. They think this is their opportunity to find out what Shaw has on them. The other Ring guys enter and are asked if they found Shaw's base. They have not and wonder if he wants them to take out Bartowski. He says not yet and they should keep interviewing employees to see if Shaw left any other surprises behind.
Lester is listening in from outside and hears Oswald say Chuck said Morgan is his best friend and they should use that to their advantage. He says to terminate the rest and Lester freaks out.
Meanwhile back at the pool Awesome is apologizing to Ellie for his behavior of late and he's loving being away and stress free.
Shaw and Sarah run to save Ellie and Awesome as Casey goes to the room where the call was made to check it out.
At the Castle, Chuck looks at pictures trying to flash. He calls Casey who promptly hangs up on him.
Devon gets up to get more drinks and is grabbed by Sarah and Shaw. They explain the Ring thinks he's an agent and wants to turn him. Awesome worries he and Ellie are in danger.
Morgan and Jeff watch as the buyers/Ring operative search the Buy More. Morgan says they're searching lockers. Jeff freaks out since he has "contraband' in his locker. He asks Morgan to help him.
Casey enters the room to find a Ring phone set up to automatically make the call they heard and realizes it's a setup. He texts Shaw and tells them to abort the mission. Shaw tells Awesome to continue enjoying himself. Awesome isn't sure that's possible.
Morgan opens Jeff's locker, and besides lots of pictures of himself finds a weird glass jar of liquid. Morgan hears someone coming and hides on top of something opposite the lockers. The operatives find the secret door to the Castle behind the lockers. Morgan hears them say it's a "secret CIA base." As Oswald and the others walk in, Morgan scurries behind them. He looks down the crazy hallways of the Castle and freaks.
Chuck isn't there anymore, he's gone up to the Buy More to see what's up. Lester plays him the tape of Oswald saying they're going to "terminate" everyone. Big Mike can't believe they're firing everyone but Chuck and Morgan. Chuck wonders where Morgan is.
Morgan is eavesdroppoing on Oswald and the gang who are excited to have hit the motherlode of CIA intel on the Ring. Oswald is impressed with the cleverness of the Castle's location. They're plan is to gather up the mainframe and blow the Castle sky high.
At the hotel Shaw, Sarah, and Casey realized they were lured there since the Ring knows Shaw is alive and likely has a base of operations. They realize Chuck is a sitting duck. They take off.
Chuck is headed towards the locker room when a crazed Morgan intercepts him and spills the news a secret CIA base is under the Buy More and a group of bad guys known as the Ring are about to do them in. He tells Chuck he knows it's a lot to take in and not freak out.
The heroic trio are in the van on the way back and none of them can get through to Chuck because the Ring has knocked out the signal to the store. Morgan says they need to handle it. Chuck says no, they need to get people out of the store. Morgan says he's ready to be a hero and they are America's last line of defense. Chuck says this not a video game but real life. Morgan says he's ready to do it and he will get Jeff and Lester to help. Chuck says okay but first they have to get everyone out and they will keep the CIA thing a secret.
They turn the corner and the employees are "locking down" the store by placing stuff in front of the door saying they are refusing to be fired. Mike, Lester, and Jeff and the others vie to go down fighting and they will not leave the store. Chuck tries to convince them this is a bad and illegal idea and dangerous idea. Mike says the corporate fat cats will not take their jobs or store. They raise the flag of Buy Moria.
Chuck raises Sarah on his watch and lets them in on what's happening. They say they're on their way. Morgan arrives with supplies, walkie talkies and Mace. He's psyched to take on the Ring. Chuck tries to talk him out of it, but Morgan is fired up and he says he's done being a loser and it's time for him to be a hero. He walks right in on a circle of Ring agents weapons drawn.
They tie them up back to back and keep referring to Chuck as Agent Carmichael. They say Shaw's files on the Ring aren't at the Castle and want Chuck to tell them where they are. Morgan is confused and says they work at the Buy More and have nothing to say. Oswald sharpens a straight razor and threatens Chuck. Chuck says torture won't be effective since if he was a spy, and he's not saying he is, he would've been taught to withstand torture. Oswald says he's going to torture Morgan. He's about to cut Morgan's face when Morgan protests he's known Chuck all his life and there's no way he could be a spy. Morgan begs Chuck to tell them something. He does, the truth, he's part of a joint NSA-CIA task force stationed in Burbank and his code name is Agent Carmichael. He's a spy. Morgan is flabbergasted.
Sarah and Shaw are in the yogurt store where they discover they're locked out of the Castle.
Casey goes to check the Buy More entrance and is rained down by foam pellet guns from the employees. He says he wants in on the fight against the corporate fat cats. They allow him in.
Morgan is freaking out and Oswald says the friends can make up later. For now he wants the intel. Before Chuck can give up any more info another Ring agent comes in to alert them "Colonel Casey" and "Agent Walker" have arrived. Morgan can't believe Casey and Sarah are spies too. Oswald says Morgan's got a lot of catching up to do, he's going to take care of Chuck's friends and they'll resume the torture later. Morgan can't believe Chuck kept this secret from him. Chuck apologizes profusely and talks about how badly he wanted to tell him but he had to protect him. Morgan is now excited Chuck is a spy and it makes perfect sense and he's glad he hasn't lost him as a friend. It was just Chuck was busy saving the world. He rehires him as his best friend. He asks all the details: when? where? He says they're about to die so it's no time for secrets. Chuck agrees and begins to spill the whole thing, starting with the email from Bryce.
The employees' revolution has now extended to a "Rock Band" version of "Fortunate Son" with Jeff on "guitar" and Lester on vocals.
Casey is trying to get into the Castle via the locker entrance but it's blocked.
The Ring agents have finally found Shaw's files on disc and uploaded them to their home base. They notice Casey trying to get in and Oswald orders him killed. Two agents bust from behind the lockers and double team Casey. A dazed Jeff walks in while this happening. He's sniffing something. Ether? He's confused by the fighting and tells them to make love not war. Casey manages to take out one dude while Jeff jumps on another and knocks him out with the ether. Jeff wanders out. Casey grabs a gun and tries to get past the lockers again but can't.
Shaw says there's a self-destruct function for the Castle at Langley and he's going to tell them to blow it. Sarah begs him to give Chuck five more minutes, he's been a good agent and served his team and his country well and he deserves five more minutes to make it work.
Chuck finishes telling his tale and says he feels so much better to have gotten if off his chest. Morgan is amazed but his one question is: was Sarah his beard? Was the relationship never real? Chuck bobs and weaves on this but more or less concedes. Morgan says no matter what, it was clear Chuck loved Sarah, he's a good liar but not that good, they all saw the way Chuck looked at her. Chuck exhales and realizes (and says) he does love her. The Ring guys come back in to finish them off and Chuck finally flashes, on his kung fu, of course. He takes out all the agents with some sweet acrobatic moves and stick play. When Oswald faces him with a sword, Morgan knocks him out with a sweet stick move of his own. Chuck is impressed.
Casey arrives at the yogurt store and confirms they're locked out from all angles. Shaw says time is up and he calls Langley. They hear the Castle doors open and Morgan emerges victorious saying "bag 'em and tag 'em Sarah. Excuse me, Agent Walker." The spy trio is confused. Chuck brings up the rear with a smile.
Morgan is put into an interrogation room and Shaw says they have to put him in witness protection. Chuck protests they didn't do that to Awesome. Casey points out Awesome is awesome and Morgan is not. Shaw says they can't trust him. Chuck says they can trust him and there are 22 of them, the number of years Morgan has been his best friend and he's nothing if not loyal. Sarah says he's right. Chuck points out now Morgan knows he has his best friend back and he's flashing again. Shaw relents and lets Morgan out. Morgan wonders if he's part of the team now. Casey is horrified. Chuck says he needs to walk before he runs. Morgan suggest an old school celebration of games and meatball subs, just the two of them.
Shaw calls Big Mike posing as a suit from Buy More corporate to inform them the store is no longer for sale. Mike declares victory. The employees celebrate.
As Morgan and Chuck arrive home Awesome approaches. Morgan goes inside and Chuck says he heard about what happened and everything is cool now. Awesome is clearly nervous. Chuck says they're doing all they can to keep him and Ellie safe.
This does not reassure Awesome and he goes back inside and says they should get away. Ellie says they just did. Further, he meant. Hawaii? Cabo? Nope, he looks at a magazine she just dropped on the table with a lion on the cover and says Africa. He proposes they join Doctors Without Border and travel the world together. She is confused and says she's worried about leaving Chuck since she's his only family. He says it's not about Chuck, it's about them. She thinks it's crazy, but looks like she could be persuaded.
Back at Castle Shaw tells Sarah they don't have shut down because they were able to keep the Ring from sending out their intel. He says now they have time to put together a full offensive. She wonders what's wrong then. He says the Ring had him dead to rights in Malibu at the hotel, why didn't they kill him?
As they play their videogames Morgan continues to quiz Chuck about the spy game and Sarah and Casey. Chuck kills at the videogame and Morgan accuses him of flashing.
Casey sets up the Ring phone he got at the Malibu hotel on a device in the Castle and goes to attend to other business in the room. The phone rings. Casey looks at it nervously and picks it up gingerly and says hello. A voice on the other hand greets him and says it's been a long time.
