Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”
Aaron Pruner (The Wrap) observed: “Erskine, who many will recognize as the brace-faced 13-year old in Hulu comedy “PEN15,...

Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall for a third season with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon again electrifying our screens. The show initially followed allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding a male co-anchor (Steve Carell) as the #MeToo movement was explored. Later, the series delved into other political topics and current events such as racial inequality, Russia invading Ukraine, Covid-19, and the Capitol insurrection.
Our guiding lights throughout all of this are Aniston’s powerhouse Alex Levy and Witherspoon’s moral-driven Bradley Jackson. In season three, they have to contend with affairs, media mergers, tech moguls (Jon Hamm), producers, and even going into space.
Season three quite literally explored new territories and critics felt that the show hit its stride, nailing its mad-cap, ludicrously entertaining tone.
Peter Travers (ABC News) noted: “Aniston and Witherspoon, plus star newbie Jon Hamm, power up the best season yet for...

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be a departure from its predecessors in at least one major way, according to George R.R. Martin.
HBO’s upcoming Dunk-and-Egg spinoff “will be a lot shorter than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, with a much different tone,” author and executive producer Martin posted Wednesday on his blog. “But it’s still Westeros, so no one is truly safe.”

Apple TV+ has a lush new series, “Palm Royale,” that is as beautiful to watch as its all-star cast, led by Kristen Wiig, Carol Burnett, Allison Janney and Laura Dern. Abe Sylvia adapted Juliet McDaniel‘s novel “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie.” This period piece set in 1969. is centered on Wiig as an outsider trying to gain a place in Palm Beach’s high society. The vistas are all pretty to look at while the petty politicking keeps things zipping along. Critics have hailed this clever comedy.
André Hereford (Metro Weekly) noted: “‘Palm Royale’ revs up the comedy slowly but ultimately hits cruising speed as a gleefully campy spin on nighttime soaps.”
Joey Moser (Awards Daily) observed: “Supported by a game, limber cast, ‘Palm Royale’ is a cheeky, gorgeous tale of ambition and identity led by a never-better Wiig.”

Exclusive: Stephen Merchant has revealed that The Outlaws Season 3 could be the comedy crime thriller’s swansong.
The creator of the BBC/Amazon hit said “never say never” on making more but “the problem at the moment is whenever I finish a project I feel a bit burned out and need to take some time away to regroup.”
He said there are no plans to make more Outlaws as it currently stands and he is instead preparing for a stand-up comedy tour and working on developing film scripts, along with exec producing Greg Daniels’ upcoming The Office spin-off.
“I think this series concludes in a very nice way and hopefully might bring a tear to the eye, so if it does then that would be great,” Merchant told Deadline in the days leading up to Season 3 premiere. “I am so pleased it’s run this long. I’ve enjoyed the cast,...

Apple TV+ is sure to perform well at this year’s Emmys with a number of shows strongly positioned including “Lessons in Chemistry,” “Sugar,” “Manhunt,” “The New Look,” and “Masters of the Air.” Well, add in another limited series to that mix — the historical drama “Franklin,” starring Oscar-winner Michael Douglas as the titular Benjamin Franklin.
The show chronicles Franklin’s eight years in France, wherein he attempted to convince King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to support the colonies in the American Revolutionary War. The series, as you’d expect, features fabulous costumes, sets, and hair and makeup. It is anchored by a powerhouse performance from Douglas, whose take on Franklin is a more modern one. The show is all the more entertaining for it, as noted by critics.

Cillian Murphy capped off his domination of awards season by claiming the top acting prize for film on home soil.
The Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG award winner on Saturday night added perhaps a final statue to his flawless haul of honors for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” when he was named best lead actor at the 21st Irish Film and TV Academy Awards.

2022 was the year that Apple TV+'s billions of dollars spent on content began to bear fruit, with several successful releases premiering on the small screen – we got the sci-fi Severance, the spy thriller Slow Horses, and the crime show Black Bird.
Unsurprisingly, Sharon Horgan's Irish comedy thriller Bad Sisters, which has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, did not have its moment of glory as it was overshadowed by bigger releases. And it’s time to get acquainted with this Apple TV hidden masterpiece.

The dark comedy tells the story of five sisters from picturesque Ireland who banded together after the death of their parents, always supporting each other. The union falls apart when one of them marries and becomes a sad and helpless housewife whose husband forbids her to be herself.

Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.
Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.
Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.
Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

Apple TV’s “The New Look” tells the story of Christian Dior (Emmy champ Ben Mendelsohn) as he struggles to create a new fashion line in Paris soon after the end of World War II. He comes into conflict with the legendary designer Coco Chanel (Oscar winner Juliette Binoche). This sumptuous costume drama spares no expense and showcases these two award-winning actors.
Critics have embraced the show, too, with Angie Han (The Hollywood Reporter) calling it “handsome and heartbreaking.” Among the others giving it rave reviews:

“Lessons in Chemistry” is Apple TV’s shiny new limited series and it looks like the streaming service has another major Emmy player. Oscar winner Brie Larson is Elizabeth Zott, a lab technician in the 1960s who takes up a gig as the host of a cooking show and uses her position to educate women about scientific topics. “The Office” writer and director and “Jury Duty” creator Lee Eisenberg adapted Bonnie Garmus‘ book of the same name. Critics were effusive in their praise of the show.
Peter Travers (ABC News) wrote: “This fierce, funny and vital series tackles a mid-century battle for women’s rights through the eyes of a chemist—an Emmy-bound Brie Larson—who uses a local TV cooking show to lead the charge.”
Cristina Escobar (Roger Ebert) noted: “Lee Eisenberg crafts an aspirational fairytale, building a positively lovely universe and central heroine to spend eight episodes with.

“You can literally film anything in Ireland that you want to — obviously desert scenes are a bit complicated, but we’ll have a go.” In this quick quip, veteran Irish producer Tristan Orpen Lynch sums up so much about his home country’s movie business right now. A fresh swell of opportunity and confidence may be swirling through it, thanks to the government’s decision to allow producers to claim back 32 percent of any spend on film, TV and animation to $134 million, up from $75 million. However, insiders say it’s actually in the midst of a deeper sea change built upon decades of investment, support and training — always combined with the nation’s innate charm and visually striking locales.
In 2021, the Irish screen industry rapidly bounced back after Covid to generate €500 million ($547m) local spend, its highest ever and 40 percent more than the last record set in 2019. Roll on 2023, and...

Duncan Jones made an incredible debut with his Sam Rockwell-starring sci-fi, Moon. However, his follow-ups haven’t collected as much acclaim with the Groundhog Day-on-a-train thriller Source Code, his step into the big-budget franchise world with Warcraft, and his high-concept Netflix sci-fi, Mute. In a new interview with the New Yorker, it’s revealed for the first time that Coppola had cast Oscar nominee Florence Pugh to star in the lead role of Undine Spragg, a Midwestern girl who attempts to ascend in New York City society.

In a normal year, the 2023 Emmy Awards would have actually taken place in 2023. But last year was anything but normal in Hollywood, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the award ceremony’s postponement to January 15, 2024.
Fans of Succession, The Bear, and Beef had a lot to celebrate as Emmy voters threw most of the awards in their direction. Succession and The Bear tied with six wins each, and Beef wasn’t far behind with five.
Highlights included Christina Applegate’s surprise appearance on stage to a standing ovation, Carol Burnett presenting to Quinta Brunson (the first Black actress to win as Lead Actress in a Comedy since 1981), and Niecy Nash-Betts’ powerful acceptance speech for Dahmer. There were also cast reunions and Sir Elton John finally received the E portion of Egot for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special.

The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.

The Emmys finally happened.
After a four-month delay due to the WGA and SAG strikes, the 2023 Primetime Emmys took place January 15 in Los Angeles. The big takeaway? There may just be way too much TV for Emmy voters to watch, so much like the noms suggested back in July 2023, winners during the ceremony were mainly confined to a few big hits.
Those hits were well-deserved, however: “Succession” closed out its final Emmys with six wins, including the big one for Outstanding Drama Series. “The Bear” made a huge impression out of the gate, notching an Outstanding Comedy Series win for its first season, as well as individual wins for Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Ayo Edebiri.
“Beef” likewise cleaned up. The buzzy Netflix project scored wins for Outstanding Limited Series as well as individual wins for Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and creator Lee Sung Jin (also an IndieWire Honors recipient!

“Succession” star Sarah Snook won the Emmy on Monday night for outstanding actress in a drama series. The win was Snook’s first Emmy for playing Shiv Roy on the hit HBO series, which ended its run last May after four seasons.
“Thanks to everyone who voted and for loving the show as much as we did as a cast making it and as a crew making it,” Snook began after accepting the award from Jodie Foster, who presented the category. “We put our all into it and the bar was set so high. I think that’s what spurred us on from every department. We all gave it our best, led by [series creator] Jesse Armstrong and [director] Mark Mylod and my cast who I love so much and I’m going to miss.”
Snook moved to thank those in personal life, including a new addition to her family: “To my mom and dad,...

Shiv Roy may have had to reach for her superior’s hand at the end of “Succession,” but Sarah Snook only extended her arm Monday night to receive her trophy. The Australian actor won the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series, marking her first victory overall.
Previously, Snook had been nominated twice for playing the ruthless political consultant turned aspiring Waystar Royco CEO. Both nods came in the Supporting Actress category, but she — along with her onscreen sibling, Kieran Culkin — moved to the Lead categories for “Succession’s” final season.
Snook triumphed in a stacked category. Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) has 15 Emmy nominations throughout her career, and she’s won twice. Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) is a four-time nominee who many consider long overdue for a win herself. This is Sharon Horgan’s first acting nomination at the Emmys, but she’s also nominated for writing this year,...
