Japan has dominated this year’s Asia Pacific Screen Awards (Apsa), with German filmmaker Wim Wenders’ latest Tokyo-set pic and Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car follow-up taking the top prizes.
Wenders’ Cannes competition title Perfect Days won Apsa’s Best Film award, while Hamaguchi’s enigmatic Venice title Evil Does Not Exist nabbed the Jury Grand Prize this evening at the Australian ceremony.
“It is with great pleasure and pride that my Japanese producers Takuma Takasaki and Koji Yanai and myself received the news that our film Perfect Days was awarded Best Picture at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards,” Wenders said, accepting the award via video message.
He added: “Wow, what an honor. Especially for a German director. The film was, in many ways, a dream come true for all of us, especially the fact that nobody less than the great Koji Yakusho played the leading role, the humble public servant,...

Having never been in a high security mental institution I can only imagine what the interaction between cook and patient really is. I keep thinking of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest… Nurse Ratchet. McMurphy. Chief. It would seem to me it’s a rather humorous place to be if you just take the Ken Kesey angle (until Billy kills himself… then it’s no fun for anyone). Maybe the institution of Asylum Blackout is more like Arkham Asylum from the world of Batman. Dark. Demented. The patients ready to get out and exact revenge, insanely, on a staff that cared too little. Mostly I think of the thorazine shuffle. I think of heavily medicated folks drooling on themselves meandering about their padded cell. With that in mind, when I tell you that Asylum Blackout didn’t quite do it for me, it’s not for the lack of...

It’s no secret that Hitler was into the occult. This premise has allowed for many a supernatural story to emerge. The Nazis want everything supernatural. They want the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the key to demons of another plane in Hellboy, the power of the Witchblade, the Scroll of the Ultimate in Bulletproof Monk, Werewolf Women of the S.S.(nuff said),… the list goes on and now, they seek the secret to immortality!

Imagine if you will a slasher film set in the tropics. A group of young people take a boat out and have sex, drink lots of wine, and party all night long. Their vacation is interrupted, however, when the men on the boat spot an island full of beautiful women who are singing a haunting tune, and they take their ship off course. They attempt to rescue and get into bed with these island goddesses, but the women brutally murder everyone. Now, just keep imagining that movie because I guarantee it will be more exciting than anything you will see in Siren.
In Siren, Ken (Eoin Macken) and Rachel (Anna Skellern) take a trip to the tropics and invite along Rachel's ex-boyfriend Marco. (Wow, I wonder if there will be tension here!) Of course, Marco is still hung up on Rachel, so when she's having sex with Ken below deck,...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Meskada" (2010)
Directed by Josh Sternfeld
Released by Anchor Bay Entertainment
When this thriller premiered at Tribeca this past spring, Alison Willmore wrote, "the second film from writer/director Josh Sternfeld ("Winter Solstice") has ambitions reaching beyond being a straightforward police procedural," though critics, including her, were mixed about the end result. Nick Stahl and Rachel Nichols star as small-town sleuths who investigate a botched home invasion case that claims the life of a young child in an affluent community and enflames class divisions when the main suspects are from the poorer community nearby. Grace Gummer, Meryl Streep's second daughter to go into the family profession, makes her film debut.
"Anywhere USA" (2008)
Directed by Chusy Haney-Jardine
Released by Cinevolve Studios

Lionsgate will be releasing its new supernatural thriller Siren on March 22nd on DVD. The film has a great story about the mythological character which finds a group of friends out boating who find a young girl needing help who actually turns into their worst nightmare. She is a Siren, a sea nymph who lures people in by her sweet singing mariners to destruction on the rocks surrounding her island.
Siren stars Anna Skellern (The Descent Part 2), Tereza Srbova (Ink Heart), Eoin Macken (The Tudors), Anthony Jabre who all make this film really fun to watch. It's not a great movie but it does have its creepy moments and just a touch of special effects and blood, which as a horror fan I always love plenty of blood. The DVD has a running time of 80 minutes which is just right for a film like this.

No better way to recharge the batteries than the get away for a weekend and that’s exactly what Ken and Rachel decide to do. They make plans to escape city life for a weekend of sailing and relaxation with their old friend Marco but their weekend plans are thwarted when they spot a woman waving for help from a deserted island. They decide to go ashore to investigate but once there, find themselves involved in much more than a rescue operation.
Andrew Hull’s Siren sounds promising and judging from the trailer, it shouldn’t disappoint. There seems to be a supernatural element at play here, or it may simply be a case of people on the brink of losing their minds coming up with an explanation for what’s happening (“She hypnotised us!”). Either way, looks good.
