Good horror game with a nice toy factory environment and everything looks good. And the monster in this game gave me some good jumpscares. I love this game.

Have a nice day!

Quality Over Quantity
ChoppaREVIEWS28 January 2022
The game is really good especially with its scary atmosphere. Poppy Playtime builds tense throughout the gameplay but unfortunately the duration of the first chapter was really off putting. I could complete the game in a small amount of time but overall its a great game with fantastic graphics and i would recommend buying it if you're into games like 'Five Nights At Freddys'.

Warning: Spoilers
Dis game was pretty good but chapter 2 was kinda rushed. It was scary at first but the scary effect died off after a while, a fun game. By the way idk why parents think dis game makes kids crazy, its just a game. If people didnt call kids playing squid game's "red light, green light" and "glass bridge" crazy then dont call kids playing "poppy playtime" crazy. Character design was pretty good and plot was pretty good for poppy and mommy long legs. Anyways dis game was a 7/10!

For a small indie game made by a small team, This was actually impressive!
AhmedDaReviewer4 November 2021
This game has A LOT of potential, Even though the first chapter felt more like a demo more than anything and was only like 20 minutes long, This game is really promising!

First of all, The environment looks fantastic, The old abandoned factory setting (while yes, it has been done before a lot) is really cool, The puzzles with the packbag hands thingy were really unique cool too, Really wish more horror games had more of these type of gimmicks, and the animations were fantastic, Especially the chase sequence near the end, Oh my god, My heart was racing like crazy, It was SO GOOD, Huggy Wuggy's movements and animations combined with the sound design were absolutely terrifying!

And you could tell that the people behind this game REALLY knew what they were doing, with all the lore, history and tapes they wrote for this game and the amazing cutscene in the beginning, You could Clearly tell that a lot of care and love went into the making of this game.

I just hope this game doesn't go the FNaF route.. Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with having some inspiration from another big indie horror title, But I just hope this game will be It's own thing, and not just another game made for YouTubers so they can make like 300 videos theorizing about the characters and lore so kids could watch them and give them millions of views, You know what am I talking if you have been on YouTube long enough..

So yeah to summarize it for you, This game was a pleasant experience, Not gonna lie, It's kinda hard to judge the game right now with only one chapter out, and I'm kinda curious to see what will they do in the future, Will Huggy be the main antagonist of the game? Will the backpack still be the main game mechanic or will we get a new tool every chapter to solve puzzles with?.. I don't know really, But either way I will be checking out what else this game has to offer in the next chapters, but until then I'm pretty satisfied with my rating.

7/10.

Very Much Flawed, But Overall A Great Experience
yasminsparkles16 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I have mixed feelings toward this game, but my opinion sure does lean towards positivity. The way the environments are designed is absolutely fantastic, and the voice actors do a phenomenal job of pouring their heart and soul into the characters and bringing them to life. The antagonist designs do end up having the same pattern, with the longer, skinnier limbs and bigger bodies, I don't see too much of a problem, especially with The Prototype, the series' big end villain, clearly hinted at having a completely different design. The story, while having a few holes here and there, is much more coherent and organized than some other indie horror games. While I do get the feel that the creators behind the game, Mob Entertainment, are starting to milk the series a little more than they should, it doesn't change the fact that they've made a mascot horror game that has its own identity while still taking appropriate inspiration from other franchises.

That being said, our main protagonist. I know this is intentional, but I don't really like our character's motives and find their scripted actions so bizarre that it takes me out of the game. I know it's a standard horror protagonist trope and we're all pretty much used to it by name, but I just can't really find myself believing that an adult randomly finds a note with misspellings in their mail telling them to go back to their old workplace that caused many people to disappear, and just answer its call seemingly without a second thought. I know the whole "silent protagonist" is supposed to let us insert ourselves and have us more immersed in the game, but since we have to do what the game tells us to do anyway without many decisions to make for ourselves, it feels like it defeats the purpose. I feel like Mob could have taken the opportunity to make this a choice-driven indie horror, where our actions impact the flow of the story as it goes on. Maybe I am misunderstanding the character's motives or taking things way too seriously, but I can't really see how guilt is driving us to free the toys, especially since right after chapter 1, we just go ahead and free this sentient doll and ultimately decide to get out. Why couldn't we get the police involved after The Hour of Joy was over? Why couldn't we go back to Playtime Co. On our own to collect that evidence and submit it to the police, then turning ourselves in as a way to make up for these crimes, but ultimately being stopped by The Prototype because he doesn't want the factory's secrets getting out? Just a thought, but maybe these questions will be answered in Chapter 4

Secondly is Mommy Long Legs. This is definitely due to personal preference, but I didn't really find her design all that intimidating her scary. It was refreshing to not see another stiff animatronic attacking us, but her bright pink appearance just wasn't really it for me. Over time, we'd slowly destroy her, making her much more deteriorated and maybe seeing human muscle and organs the more we try to stop her. That way, her words of danger and foreshadowing would have more of an impact. However, despite my opinions, I do adore her personality! And her voice actress did a fantastic job of capturing her sinister nature.

The next few points I want to cover would mostly be about chapter 3, which I feel is Poppy Playtime's best chapter.

More positive things I wanna point out though, I really love the animation for the Smiling Critters, and how that terrifying ending transitioned to a news outlet about the next protagonist. Didn't make much sense that Playtime Co. Would release an animation with that horrific ending if it was an episode geared toward kids, but still was a great intro overall. Not to mention how the textures were much more well-designed and the character models were beautifully animated.

Now for the negatives...

The puzzles in this chapter don't make much sense to me. In the first two chapters, they felt very unique to Poppy Playtime's identity and were fun to do, while also blending into Playtime Co.'s wacky environment. However, in chapter 3, we're still turning on power, but also activating like 6 poles to power up a lift, which only takes up one to like, one floor. This felt very odd to me; I understand having boosters because it's underground and maybe power is a lot harder to distribute, but I feel like a lot of this could have been solved with just some stairs. It just felt a little nonsensical at times.

Another thing was The Red Smoke. I felt like it was heavily underutilized despite being a focal point of the chapter. The first sequence in Home Sweet Home where it's used against ourselves and pushing our guilt in our faces was borderline genius. It allowed the main antagonist to study us like we're praying and establish how The Red Smoke will affect us and how it will make us vulnerable. And yet, afterward, that's completely thrown out the window, at least until the final confrontation fight.... I'll get to that later, I have a lot of opinions about that one. But anyway, The Red Smoke only becomes a small obstacle to us, and if we don't have our gas mask, we just immediately die. Why couldn't it be used to lead us completely off track and make us hallucinate much more vividly, giving us more clues as to who we are (more than just the worker who helped cause all this), our characterization, and even our antagonists? Have it play more into the P. T. but more as a Poppy Playtime identity; make us question who we're really talking to and what's real and what's not, not just in that first sequence, but throughout the entire game. And if we're too distracted by the hallucination, then we can be killed off, not by the smoke, but by CatNap, chapter 3's big star.

And I have some problems with this one.

CatNap was an amazing antagonist until after the Playhouse. The Home Sweet Home sequence allowed us to see what kind of character he really is; not just someone on a blind rage spree coming after us, but someone who will actively study us, figure out our weaknesses, and how we can be not only physically, but also emotionally and mentally vulnerable. It's a little like Huggy Wuggy when we see him stare at us a bit in Chapter 1 and Mommy Long Legs, how she's willing to toy with our lives. But it's implied here that CatNap is willing to do both; so that's why I don't understand people's complaints of CatNap not being seen too much. I think it would be due to the fact that his presence isn't as overwhelming as the other antagonists, and that is fair since we don't really see hints of him aside from in Home Sweet Home and a few scratch notes. But I think limiting our sight of him does help build up tension; I do think he could have toyed with us and our mindset more without actually letting us see him, but I agree with the decision on not letting him be seen too much.

I was really hyped for this character, and I was so excited to see what his fight would bring and how else he would turn our minds and guilt against us.

...and then he just doesn't.

Remember in chapter three after the DogDay chase sequence? (absolutely wonderful character by the way) Ollie tells us that "(CatNap)'ll take away anything you have to defend yourself."

..no he doesn't. He literally doesn't. He takes away our gas mask, yeah, but that's not all we have to defend ourselves. We have our GRABPACK, something which was actively used to defend ourselves against the last two antagonists??

I really, really don't like this fight. It just made CatNap seem so... lame. And kind of dumb. Sure, he was a kid when he was converted into CatNap, but being a kid doesn't automatically mean you're stupid, especially if you're Theodore. (Spoilers for the ARG: Theodore was a 7-year-old kid who was "friends" with The Prototype. One day, he asked him to wield a grab pack to help him escape, but it ultimately failed (obviously), making Theodore shock himself with the green hand and being on the brink of death)

I thought this would play into the final battle since it's literally canon that Theodore has had a traumatic experience with the grab pack, mostly the green hand. But we don't see that here. Even with the ARG context cut out, if CatNap really was watching us as much as he says he was, didn't he also see that we would be using our grab pack constantly to solve puzzles and actively go deeper into Playcare? Wouldn't he think that would pose a threat because would use it against him somehow?? Did he FORGET that we had it as soon as he took our mask???

I can't see this as something like, "Oh, maybe he was just overconfident" because we're literally told that he'll do anything to make us powerless. Especially considering that we have a green hand, something that almost KILLED HIM. You're telling me he saw this and thought nothing of it; he clearly remembers The Prototype saving him, so why couldn't he process that we had the thing that harmed him? In fact, why did he corner us and actively FOLLOW US to a room that was filled with GREEN ELECTRICITY? He had to know that was there, he clearly has access to it and has been wandering Playcare for 10 YEARS. And shouldn't he have like, not actually followed us there or maybe even showed a lot of fear and distress when he saw that we were going up towards there? Which would then indicate that he's weak in green electricity. And not to mention that the fight itself just isn't very fun or innovative at all. It's just doing the same thing over and over again with poorly explained instructions and the plot hole about The Red Smoke....first, it just makes us hallucinate, then we just straight up die for no reason, and then we hallucinate again...it doesn't make any sense.

Still a great game, but Mob really needs to fix their storytelling.

Lore!!!
londonelim28 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
You should play this!

The lore is amazingly put together! With amazing monsters like Kissy Missy and Cat-Bee. The monsters in the game are toys with some being good, some being bad, and some being dead from the other toys. The game is about coming back to your old job because a letter you retrieved in the mail, after arriving at the old factory you find it ruined and left behind. At that point you are chased by Huggy Wuggy and also solving clues to continue the game. After that you find Poppy, it continues to chapter 2 where you meet a new monster named Mommy Long Legs also solving hard clues. It continues to chapter 3 but at the time I'm writing it isn't out yet.

Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 = 8.5/10! (Eerie, w/ Intense Chase)
matthewmlang28 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
MASCOT-HORROR AT ITS BEST (at least for an obsessed newbie)

Series Overall Score of 9/10 based on: 1.) Gameplay/Puzzle Mechanics 2.) Horror/Suspense 3.) Worldbuilding/Story/Lore!

ABOUT ME (if it matters to you): 32 y.o. Male HS teacher and Army Reserve Officer. Normally, I don't play or watch horror genre-type things. I just don't like the end result of being scared even if it's a fun ride. However, this series is special (despite the nightmares it gave me lol). Played all 3 Chapters between FEB-APR24 which means I avoided (most) early release glitches.

I GOT PULLED IN BECAUSE: The franchise has such a passionate fanbase. I was Youtube algorithm leapfrogging from video to video after one of my wrestlers showed me a FNAF song (and it was a bop; "Join us for a Bite"). From there I ended up on the rapidly growing-in-popularity and content Poppy Playtime series. It has such intriguing mascot-horror atmosphere to it! CG5 and other Youtubers fan-made songs were so catchy & captivating (similar to the many massively popular FNAF songs that exist).

THE GAMEPLAY & STORY: (for reference, I find anything that's at least 6/10 servicable/acceptable):

CHAPTER 1 - Gameplay 9/10! - Story 8/10! - Horror/Suspense: 8/10! = Overall 8.5/10!

It was free to download on Steam FEB24. The game was short; I finished it in about an hour. I definitely like to explore for easter eggs and the game rewards you for this via its worldbuilding: Tapes, notes, posters etc. The atmosphere does a great job at building unease. The puzzles are simple, but effective in their unique mechanics. Despite what some people may say there are arguably a couple jump scares present. But it is done very well and is appropriately timed to where you experience them in the game. The final chase scene was intense and exciting!

CHAPTER 2 - Gameplay 8/10! - Story 9/10! - Horror/Suspense: 7/10! = Overall 8/10!

More puzzles! A memorable antagonist, more lore-building. The chase scene was still well done (and the unearthly moaning was so creepy!) and in some ways better than the original even if the character was naturally not as terrifying as Huggy was. And that's fine, she was still plenty unnerving and naturally will lose some mystery to her since she is providing some backstory via her dialogue with the character. Unfortunately, this Chapter is where I learned of some disappointing things the company had allegedly involved themselves in: NFT bs, a company workplace allegation. No idea if this is true but the general consensus online seemed to hurt the franchise's reputation a little. Lastly, I'll mention that the audio design is ON POINT! It is helpful for some of the mini-games, and downright intrinsic to all 3 Chapter's ability to elevate the creep factor.

CHAPTER 3 - Gameplay 7.5/10! - Story 8.5/10! - Horror/Suspense: 9/10! = Overall 8.5/10!

HOLY COW! This Chapter gave me more nightmares than the last two combined lol! And for a sequel that is no easy feat. Kudos Mob Entertainment They KNOW that YOU KNOW something scary is coming. And they do a masterful job building that unease and tension. This is never more apparent than in the first major Playcare building, Home Sweet Home. I was on the edge of my seat as my HR continued to build. They even manage to weave in plenty of new lore! The end boss was the first that wasn't a chase. While I applaud their creativity in trying to branch out this time it somewhat missed the mark for me. This is true for many of the puzzles in Chapter 3. It also breaks the Suspension Of Disbelief in how many puzzles were overly complicated. Like, many of these are (In-game universe) expected to just be how the regular workers just move around and do their jobs... BOSS: "Why did it take you 2 hours to come back from the bathroom?" THEM: "Bcuz I had to redo the damn puzzle thru the breakroom 9 freaking times!" Outside of that it was a solid game lasting approx. 3 hours. This includes a glitch I ran into where I had to restart the game (DogDay chase glitched me into a win, but then the rest of the world didn't react properly and I couldn't restart the mission).

I also agree that finding that antagonist balance between: very little contact (Chapter 1, Huggy who doesn't speak) VS basically following along with you as an antagonistic narrator (Chapter 2's Mommy providing exposition). They both do well for their purpose in the story even if too much contact can lower the suspense. CATNAP shows up an appropriate amount of times but isn't quite fleshed out enough as to WHY he cares about us or vice versa. We know he's like a cat playing with its food, but it just felt like something was lacking in his motivations.

That being said I am excited for Chapter 4!

PROTIP (After the Game): Have an active imagination like me? Did you make the mistake of playing the game before bed?

Fight off nightmares by watching fun Youtubers play through the game (JackScepticEye, Markiplier, CoryxKenshin, MatPat from Game Theory etc). Youtube's Horrorscope also shows you the game mechanics by utilizing into the game data itself detailing how the game/world is designed. And for a shorter post-PP wind-down I recommend the 3 short videos by the hilarious Asian Youtuber/animator Somac.

A shameful ripoff of Bendy and Tattletail
carpalthought21 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This game is nothing more than a cheap cash grab.everything is a ripoff of Bendy and the Ink Machine but has a similar storyline to Tattletail in terms of evil toys. Abandoned area appealing to kids. Evil mutant toy monster comes to kill the main character, who is not to mention, a former employee. Employees get turned into monsters and mistreated. Failed monster experiment. Player finds a plot device that becomes useful. The VHS tapes are just similar to the tape recordings in BATIM. Monster shows up after the machine is activated by the player.

The VHS tapes aren't all enjoyable and viewable and only audio is heard in them. It's clear these devs know nothing about coding and making an "original" story.

The Cashgrab Cometh
This game and the people behind it fell off spectacularly in a way I couldn't have imagined. The company behind it is effectively a minecraft mascot horror animation content farm, with people behind it that actively rip on other content creators that try to do things that are similar, to the point of making entire youtube channels about it. The game itself was kinda obviously made to be a merchandising cash cow, with plushes, merch, and nft's galore. The game uses the chapter format first seen in bendy and the ink machine, in which both first chapters are effectively demos to show what the rest of the game may look like, and feature a 2nd chapter in which you go further down into the games setting, with a new antagonist that is different from the antagonist of the first. BatIM does this much better, as it's much more stylized and smaller environment help build tension, especially with it's 2 colors, though Poppy Playtime has a much wider color palette, which takes away from it's fear factor. What's worse is the price, as Poppy Playtimes team decided to make the first chapter free, but double the price of the 2nd chapter compared to the first's, which is an extremely scummy move.

Don't give any money to the people behind this "passion" project.

Wait, what about boxy boo?

Absolutely awful
mralu1 August 2023
Do NOT play this.

It is just a shameless ripoff of other, better indie horror games and has no essence or spirit.

The community around the game is awful(I for the most part do not believe that a community can really downgrade a game's quality but this is an exception) ,it is just children and I believe that is by design. I think the game is made to be a popular souless merch quick cash grab for the developers.

I do not even know how this got so popular in 2022,there is absolutely nothing good about the game and I feel very sorry for everyone who bought this digital garbage, even other bad horror games are better than this In conclusion, this falls right in the rubbish bin of indie horror games along with the garden of BanBan and other trash trying to be like their more successful counterparts like Fnaf and Bendy.

What about Boxy Boo?
Poppy playtime fell off man. Like, I never really got into it, but at this point it's likely going to fail, and honestly? I'm kinda for it. The fact this was made by Enchantedmob says a lot about why it exists considering what Enchantedmob is at this point and what they've done in the past. This is definitely popular with residential 4 year olds everywhere, but the gameplay is truly lacking, only having around 2 or 3 different puzzle types within. The main antagonists are given little to do with themselves, as one doesn't speak, and the other doesn't really do that much in terms of presence in the story. The fact that they made the fantastic decision to make chapter 1 free, then double chapter 2's price compared to the first and not compensate people who bought chapter 1 is a little confounded, and this IP is only really being used for merchandising, remember the NFT's? Honestly, the fact that Enchantedmob decided to make poppy playtime but it's dead by daylight is absurd, the game itself is so obscure by this point that it doesn't even have an Imdb page at all.

Honestly, Poppy playtime fell off spectacularly, and I hope that it dies along with most modern mascot horror.

Wait, what about boxy boo.?
