Best cop show on TV
gerrykuff20 October 2010
This show hits the mark. It kind of sneaked in on me as I don't recall any build ups for the show beforehand but it really caught my eye from the first minutes of the first episode. I couldn't wait for the next one. When it comes to reality this is the best cop show on TV. If you want stories, technology, and beautiful people that are nothing like policing then watch any of the others. Detroit 187 doesn't go all the way but it comes closer by far than anything else on the market. I hope it does well in the ratings and lasts a long time (like the old "law and order" show). The settings, the lighting, the camera angles, the story lines and the lives of the characters really project where its at considering each episode has to be presented (commercials include) in an hours time. They sure picked the right people to write, direct and produce this gem. I hope they stay on. Congratulations.

Wonderful new addition to Television
oprlvr337 November 2010
A Detroit-er I am not; a West Michigan-der, I am. Started watching this from episode three (missed the first two), and I am blown away.

Hallelujah Detroit AND Michigan. I'd heard only rumors all summer 2010 that Detroit was trying to ground a "Law n Order" cop series. Suddenly every MI actor had "stars" in their eyes, wanting to be part of it. Finally we have a NETWORK success.

Granted it doesn't have the full 'grit' the long-running LAO does, but who says it has to? This show stands on its own. The fine cast, the writing, the production... And I love the docu-style shooting (filming). Keeps the audience part of the action.

If this series keeps going as it is, what other TV successes could be in store for Detroit (AND Michigan!)

I love the show
carlaedris1 October 2010
We all love Michael and always will. He's been working in films and TV for many, many years and has given his all.

The show is very entertaining and will probably get better as the characters grow.

Non-Detroiters would like the show to be grittier. I've heard some from Detroit say we need to see Detroit shine in this series. It's a drama and a cop show, we want to see the seedy side of Detroit. Make the good people good but keep the bad guys bad.

And, yes, it needs something to set it apart from other cop shows. Give us that, please. You're lucky enough to have Michael Imperioli; don't mess this up.

This is the Best Police Drama on network TV since NYPD: Blue
scottb31222 September 2010
I lived in the heart of the Detroit for 21yrs and I still live close by. This show has great potential! And I think that will show in the coming episodes that are shot completely in Detroit and surrounding communities(most of the pilot was shot in Atlanta). It's great to have a show that's set in a city like Detroit and not your typical NY, LA, SF, Chicago, or Miami. To let everyone know, from local news stories on the production of the show, the director is from Detroit and everything (since the pilot) is shot, and produced right here in Detroit. Yes there were a few minor "mistakes" in the pilot I seen people complain about, saying "soda" we call it "pop", and there is no bullet train, but these are very minor things that can't be faulted when all we've seen was the pilot episode. Minor fixes for what I honestly believe will be a great show that is TRUE TO DETROIT because it is being MADE IN DETROIT! Please give it the chance it deserves!

The best I have seen in a while
shallenemcgrath5 November 2010
I love the character of Fitch. I want to know why he left New York. Michael Imperioli plays him with such quiet intensity...I think that I am falling in love with him. I love that he calls everyone when he has "feelings" -keeping his distance and making it less personal. It says things about technology, our culture, a cop's plight to compartmentalize his life as to not be touched by hatred and crime.

However, even though this character is strong, the whole ensemble is equally strong. The lieutenant played by Ms. Hinds is right on. Trying to juggle her teen and put in a day's work. I really want to walk a day in her shoes and find out how she got where she is.

I also love James McDaniel as Jesse Longford who lives half his life on the mean streets of Detroit and half in a Tuscan fantasy in a desperate attempt to cope with his wife's death and rigors of his job...always giving us his unique glimpse of a light at the end of the tunnel.

So many dramas these days revolve around one character and you only see the one side of it. The writers of this drama and the strong actors playing out the written characterization have created a world that is real in the sense that the drama is personal for everyone. I would love to see this show developed so that there is not one lead, but every episode shows us different aspects of all the characters. They are all so very interesting and not the kind of cookie cutter people you see portrayed in other dramas of this type.

I watch a lot of cop/crime dramas... and though everyone is saying that this replaces Law & Order, I believe this is something so much more. It is not impersonal the way that L&O can sometimes be. We have to go through it with the personalities -it affects them. It is easy to say that there is one way -that things are black and white, but with this series we find a structure imposed on a chaos that has good people trying to keep their sanity in any way possible. I think that is what makes it real.

As to the setting, I think that the show tries to keep some of the integrity of Detroit. You can hear it in the music selections. Detroit is rife with problems there is no doubt. What the show tells me is that even though there is crime and violence in the inter-city neighborhoods, there are still people living there that care about their city, e.g. I love Natalie Martinez's rendition of Ariana Sanchez who sets the detectives straight when they bad-mouth her neighborhood.

Mr. Richman please keep writing stuff like this -an ensemble where all the characters are important and matter. It is great programming.

Thank you.

Awesome
ethanzastrow23 December 2010
I'm thoroughly impressed with Detroit 1-8-7. This show is much more down to earth than any other cop show out there. The attention it brings to a true American ghetto like Detroit is astounding. It sounds ridiculous, but I truly believe that shows like this one that encourage people to take back their city can really make a difference. I've even heard that this show is really boosting Detroit's economy.

Coming from the Rust Belt myself (Milwaukee native), I love seeing a setting I can actually relate to, instead of flashy cities like New York, L. A., or Miami all the time. Plus, the Fitch character is freaking fantastic.

ABC better not cancel this show. It's awesome. I think it'll catch on for sure if they give it enough time.

This is the BEST crime show out there!
jeanannvk1 April 2011
I have watched all of season 1 and have to say I absolutely LOVE this show! I am a big fan of crime-drama type TV (CSI, Law & Order) and this is my favorite of all of them. The filming style is so realistic and the characters are complex and multi-dimensional. I haven't seen a series this "real" since Hill Street Blues.

When we first meet the primary character, Fitch, it seems like he might spend the rest of the series as the weird, slightly off cop. I was worried the character would end up like Monk...a sort of savant with no social skills. As the episodes pass, we learn more about him and understand why he is so careful to avoid deeper connections with those around him. Layer after layer is revealed and we find an amazing example of a well-developed character.

All of the characters in this show are well crafted and all of the actors do a superb job with the roles. There are no trite plot developments...which is shocking considering how many crime drama episodes are already in existence.

I hope this series is renewed!

LOV this show
tropicalsen20 January 2011
I look forward to seeing Detroit 187 each week. The characters are so well defined & interesting. The show is more about them..then any crime they are solving. I love the way they follow each partner on their separate investigations and the interaction between each character. I really do not have a favorite character because each one is so well defined. I look forward to finding out more about each one as the show progresses.

Also love seeing the views of a City that was once Grand..the Old Mansonsthat are now in need to rehab are so interesting.

BUT where is my show? It wasn't on last week and I am worried they might have moved to another time...or were canceled. Please keep this show on the air.

Getting better all the time!
zaenkney6 October 2010
Michael Imperioli is unarguably a fine, exciting actor and Detroit, without question, is a city endless with unique perspective, YET... in the beginning I was unimpressed. With so much talent and atmosphere to work with, I was confused. In fact, I wondered if the writers were even familiar with Detroit. I had only been there once, but I was knocked sideways and for a loop everywhere I went by the sheer eclectic nature of the place and the people. I wasn't willing to say my expectations were too high. It seemed, to me, something was missing, and it wasn't the actors. In fact, the ethnic scope and sheer talent of the cast certainly seems to reflect the basic socioeconomic communities of this grand city. So, I resigned myself to hope that we might, at some future point, see story lines more congruent with the talent and the town! Moreover, the small snippets of R&B and Blues struck sparks and left voids - I wanted more! That is the language of Detroit… right? 10/06/2010

OKAY! I RECANT! It's become grittier, more in tune with the dark side of this great city; and it feels like the Blues in it's various vibes, which is the spirit of Detroit, is becoming more a part of the fabric of each episode. Detroit 1-8-7 is definitely hitting it's stride. 10/27/2010

A breath of fresh air in Crime Shows
kmelucci27 October 2010
Yes, there are an overabundance of crime shows on Television.

Yes, I'm sure there is some skepticism as to whether the loyal fans of this show are truly commenting on show quality or just looking for some local publicity...

But this show is great. Really.

The acting is superb, the story lines are endearing, interesting, and unique, and they mix a good deal of intelligent comedy with drama. The character development is fantastic- as intricate as an indie movie. And the location provides a refreshing diversion from the typical crime show locales into something more gritty and real.

I watched this show with someone who was pretty resistant to "another cop show" and he now watches regularly... calling it "the best crime show I've seen in a long time"

Interesting, but wanting
CryptoGuy22 September 2010
I found Detroit 1-8-7 trying to be gritty and fresh, but was left wanting. Since this is just the pilot, I'll hold off before deciding whether or not I like it. Pilots tend to be just a flavor of what to expect. I found the characters to be intriguing, but with just a hint of depth. Again, it's a pilot and the characters will, hopefully, find their voice in the show. There were some glaring regional problems in the dialogue, of which you get a hint of with the title of the show.

The biggest problem I had with the pilot was the docu-style shooting. At times, I couldn't tell if the producers were trying to give the audience that "fly on the wall" perspective or if they were shooting a straight cop drama. I say cut the docu-style shooting and go with the straight shoot. The last thing we need is a twist on The Office style, which every new show seems to try and emulate some way or another.

The writers need to engross themselves in the Detroit culture and feeling to get it right. It has the feeling of being written by outsiders; however, that feeling is most assuredly only felt by Detroiters. The rest of the world has no idea what it's like here. My two cents: hire some local Detroit writers to work on the show. I'm game if they are.

Recognizing a Hit SHow
joval20113 April 2011
I love the grittiness of this show. The story lines are real, they do not need the crutch of fancy special effects like all of the CSI shows use. Detroit 1-8-7 deserves respect. There are other shows that are also good but unfortunately too many bad shows stay on the air because they appeal to the masses. Give them more good shows like this one and the networks will have a whole new audience.

If this show is canceled because some network executive cannot recognize a quality show then I hope it gets picked up by one of the cable channels with more vision and respect for the viewers.

In summary, this show has all the ingredients for a hit. It has well-developed characters, drama, grit, humor, and the best acting in its stars.

Misses the mark
Bronco4614 January 2011
Well, it is filmed it Detroit. At least so far. I wouldn't be surprised if that changed at some time in the future; and they went to filming somewhere else with canned Detroit footage. Detroit's one of those places it nice to be from. A long way from. Detroit is probably near the top 10 of the top fifty cities in the United States. As someone who moved away 15 years ago I know of what I speak. That being said, there are other problems; for instance a murder is not a 187 in Detroit. They probably got to far into the project before they figured that out. Someone was trying to build a show in the pattern of other shows where the city was the star like NYPD Blue and most especially Homicide: Life on the Streets and The Wire. Sadly they did a direct rip off a concept from Homicide. The great Yaphet Kotto played Lt. Al Giardello the interesting black cop who was cultured and spoke Italian. So apparently that seemed like a good idea because they have a black higher ranking detective who speaks Italian and is worldly. It's really sad to see such blatant stealing of a concept. I worked in an emergency room in Detroit for several years and there lots of stories there. The producers and writers of this show just didn't bother to go to the trouble to look for those stories. And lastly Detroit has lost most of what gave it personality. Detroit is mostly abandoned homes, offices, factories, even skyscrapers. It has to be challenge for the director to find shots of the city don't look like a war zone. Baltimore has serious problems, but nothing like Detroit. I remember about 15 or 20 years ago a common bumper sticker was "Will the last person to leave Detroit please turn out the lights" I even saw a review of this show that said this is realistic. It's far from realistic 80% of homicides in Detroit are drug related, 5% random violence, 15% family killings. And 90% are black on black crime; because the city is 90% black. And this show contains the usual assortment of skinny attractive people playing cops. Not that the murder cops in Detroit are ugly; but most don't look like this bunch. They would be better served by actually looking at Detroit's crime stats there are plenty of interesting stories there. I wasn't even a cop and I've seen several incidents that would make better stories then they've come up with so far. I imagine the mayor's office makes sure no one sees the real Detroit. Detroit was once the largest bedroom community in the world. Most of those neighborhoods are now filled with vacant and burned out husks of homes, with tens of thousands of vacant lots. To sum up. While this isn't a bad show; it doesn't hold a candle to NYPD Blue, Homicide, or The Wire. I hate to think that people will watch this show and think Detroit looks like a fun place to go to---it's not, there's very little night life that's safe to take part of.

Further proof that "The Wire" was the best cop drama ever
knucklebreather23 September 2010
I wanted to like "Detroit 1-8-7" but there are just so many things wrong with it. There's the apparently pointless faux documentary style, the obvious posturing of various characters for future love sideplots, the fact that so many characters are borrowed from other cop dramas - a no non-sense black female homicide boss (original Law & Order), a veteran black cop constantly making references to Italian culture (Homicide: Life on the Street), and Imperioli's Fitch seems so far to be a pathetic copy of McNulty from The Wire.

Unfortunately Detroit 1-8-7's problems run deeper. Set in the city of Detroit, one of the most unique places to be a homicide cop in America, there are all of 1.5 lines in the script that would even differentiate the pilot from an episode set in any random municipality anywhere. A place where drug and gang murders are the typical homicide case and we get a half-baked, unbelievable story about a white guy on a domestic-related killing spree? Why even bother setting it in Detroit if you're going with stories that feel like they're in the Law & Order rejection bin?

The show does have sleek direction, despite the awkward faux documentary feel, and it does feature some actors who have been great in other shows. Also, it was apparently converted from a mockumentary to a serious cop drama during production. I'm going to watch more episodes and see if it makes a miraculous turnaround. But this show seems to have some fundamental problems that severely threaten to make it a dumb, pointless cop drama. It's going to take one heck of an effort to ever top "The Wire" and right now, "Detroit 1-8-7" is fumbling around in the dark.

I loved it!
mrperkins13922 September 2010
Michael Imperelli and all of the cast of this TV series were awesome! For me, it was unimaginable to envision Mr. Impeelli as any other character than "Christopher" on the HBO hit, The Sopranos. He presents much depth, range and excitement to this new show.

Try to be positive about Detroit 1-8-7 and give it a chance. And, yes, we need the revenue, jobs for local talent and the truths (good or bad), that this new show will transpire. It's television! Great entertainment! Kudos to the local actors on their wonderful job! I used to live in the suburbs of Detroit and was always frightful of that city. Times have changed, slowly. Seriously, look at who has been coming out of this great city and state. Madonna, Kid Rock, Eminem, Jeff Daniels, just to name a few. The pilot was great. More local filming will happen. Mr. Imperelli, you rock!

It Should Have Been Criminal to Cancel This
karenn118 August 2017
Seven years after this fine series was prematurely buried, I can only wonder dully what possessed the network to cancel it after only one season. Was it a lack of audience, i.e., too little generation of commercial income? It certainly couldn't be that the scripts or cast weren't acceptable! The screen writing was compelling, the cast was a finely-tuned orchestra, and in spite of the small holes in some of its incidental information, everything seemed to be in place for an exciting ride for its viewing audience. Whatever happened to "if at first you don't succeed ..."? Why not give it one more season to see if it could draw a well deserved audience? I don't know what I was watching seven years ago, to overlook this short lived gem, so I'm part of the problem. But this isn't the only potential success that was abandoned after only one season, so it seems to be a general network childishness in their attitudes of "add water and stir" mentality. Not every effort is an instant success, but I think a massive success was aborted by the powers at ABC. Shame on them! Having just watched this, I knew going in that I'd need to resist getting attached to any of the characters, but that didn't help at all. I was attached to the entire cast of characters, so I still felt stunned to know I was approaching its final episode far too soon. I wanted more. I was invested in these people despite my effort to remain detached. Seven years postmortem, I'm still glad that I watched it. I'm thinking once you board this bus, you're going to stay with it, knowing it won't take you to a satisfactory destination.

What a loss!

Was Going To Be My New Favorite Series
hdwdlnd3 April 2011
I will admit that the first episode was pretty hard to sit through and I was a little disappointed. I'm not sure what they did but it seems that the show quickly moved in a new direction for the better. I started out with Blue Bloods being my favorite new crime series after they made the horrible mistake of cutting the original Law & Order.

However, by the season's end Detroit 1-8-7 was by far my favorite winning over Blue Bloods and Chicago Code. I mention these two titles since the rumor is Detroit 1-8-7 is being canceled leaving these two as alternatives for anyone interested.

If there was a police drama out there to replace NYPD Blue this would be it. Each character is unique and engaging as well as having depth. I started out not liking Imperioli's character in the first episode but like I said they toned it down and refined the atmosphere of the series. I really like the idea where a few episodes revived cases from the past that the more veteran detectives were originally a part of. The setting being in Detroit is a key part of the series and really plays a roll well.

I would highly recommend this series and would ask another station to pick up this series if canceled.

Yeah for my home area
cherondap-861-81178310 October 2010
This show grows on you. People complain about another cop show but they talk about how horrible Detroit is but they never show anything about the history and beauty of the city. All the cop shows are primarily New York and Detroit.

The first pilot wasn't shot in Detroit primarily like the subsequent episodes. It is now and it makes for a very nostalgic show for me. I think that they need to work on the vernacular. They don't talk like Detroiters.

There are always going to be cop shows and doctor shows so quit complaining folks. It's now time for a city that's had a hard time to have a day in the sun.

Great show!
Avwillfan892 November 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Normally these kind of shows bore me, but this one, I really thoroughly enjoyed. I started watching the series purely because of Michael Imperioli. He's probably one of the most criminally underrated actors of all time. His body movements and his emotions on screen are magnetic when the crucial scenes come on.

I'm glad they chose a different city for the show to be set in other than New York. Bringing up the infamous Detroit riots and how it damaged the city, and the sad facts that its one of the most violent cities in the States with gritty violence and situations renders the series electrifying and keep you wanting for more and more every day.

The rest of the cast did really well too. I especially liked Natalie Martinez, stunningly beautiful and tough as nails at the same time.

So I honestly don't know why they canceled it. The show had more potential than a lot of the series shown today, and could have gone much further. Maybe it was because in the final episode, where Fitch puts his demon to rest, they thought it could go as far as it could. But I don't see it that way. I really do hope it can be picked up by another channel, but it seems unlikely. But as they say, never say never.

I love this show! I am a big fan of Michael Imperioli ever since he was on the Sopranos. I am also a fan of some of the newer talent on this show. I Tivo all shows and watch them again with my son who is also a huge fan. I hope this show gets picked up for a 2nd season. I love how the stories come together and how the characters interact with each other. I also love seeing Detroit cityscapes as well as Detroit landmarks. I am grateful also for the diversity the police department depicts on the show. The season finale was very well done, keeps me begging for more! I also appreciate the perspective of the senior members of the department and the perspective of the newer members of the department. Thanks for a job well done!

The problem with this show.. all the criminals in DETROIT are white
carigis17 November 2010
After watching this show I can tell you this, It could have potential. As much as I thought the main actor would be stereotyped, he does well. As a matter of fact most of the police actors do well.

However, The main drawback to this show is Hollywood pushing propaganda with it. As well as being way to politically correct. The fact is according to this show just about every criminal in Detroit is a white guy or gal.

Now I don't consider this a race issue I consider it a realism issue. DETROIT is majority Black city and the majority of the crime is drug crimes naturally being committed by the majority ethnic group of the area...which isn't whites. If they are going to go that route the show should be called fargo ND Homicide or something like that.

Not only that Hollywood is making just about every single relationship in the show an interracial one. This is not being done on accident as it happens in every show.. its being done on purpose. so..

For the acting, I give the show a 8. For the fact Hollywood is using the show for propaganda purposes or just as bad to try to be politically correct and pretend the crime rate is different then what it is in detroit.. I subtract 3.. giving the show a 5 for pretty good overall acting.

Had Hollywood not tried to make social statement with the show.. it probably would be coming back for a second season. too bad, maybe next time they won't bow down to the gods of political correctness and make a truly gritty show that also is based on SOME reality.

One of Few Shows Which Deserves At Least 5 More Seasons
probisone8 April 2011
Without making any comparisons under the microscope and taking into consideration of location and storyline, I will use my favorite "law enforcement" shows: 24 and The Shield (which have seemed to have both ran their course) as well as Southland and Detroit 1-8-7 (both I with a LONG list of seasons, with Southland already seemingly going in that direction).

Now there are 2 primary types of shows, the ones that are out on the beat hitting the turf and those whom tend to focus more on the inner-workings of law-enforcement. Southland tends to focus on the "street" element and beat cops, which in its own way makes for an extremely fantastic show. I believe that "street element" is what really gave the drive and made the show 24 spectacular series.

The second type is focused on the detective facet and most of the drama is in-house. This is where The Shield and Detroit 1-8-7 make their mark. With The Shield only running 6-7 seasons, I believe that Detroit 1-8-7 has that special "OMG, I can't wait to see what append next episode", just as all the other 3 noted above had done.

Now with the possibility of them NOT shooting a second season of Detroit 1-8-7 looming over our heads I fear that we are going to be the victims of yet another GREAT show getting the rug pulled underneath its feet, and there wont ever be a 2nd season. The thought of such a thing (like the single season of Day Break, sours my stomach. Detroit 1-8-7 had it all, great casting, great writing/plot, great acting, and the elements of action, suspense, drama, and the realism of being filmed in Detroit, makes this a dozen season show, easily. They say that it is the lowest rated "scripted" show on ABC, yet ABC has only ? drama/scripted shows? Its a network of "reality TV" crap (sorry to all of the "reality TV" fans, I get enough reality in real life)!

Detroit 1-8-7 has received generally positive reviews. It has an average score of 63/100 on Metacritic based on 23 reviews from users. It has an arithmetic mean of 8.4/10 on IMDb and a median rating of 9/10. Robert Bianco of USA Today describes the series as the best police drama on ABC since NYPD Blue ended. Bianco says the show's best trait is its uncommon setting and that it is filmed where it is set, "which gives it an authenticity and a palpable sense of place." The New York Times's television critic Alessandra Stanley said the show is "a throwback to an earlier era of cop shows when steel-edged realism was still novel and there was a thrill to watching terse, streetwise detectives on shows like Dragnet and Kojak cajole witnesses and browbeat suspects. Should they cancel and not continue a second season, I will be forced to sue ABC on the grounds of mental distress and anguish. I will settle out of court for a contract of at least 5 more seasons or should the utmost unfortunate death occur of Michael Imperioli (Detective Louis Fitch) (and if they loose Natalie Martinez's character 'Detective Ariana Sanchez'. Best cop show on TV today!
TalmarcFilm21 February 2011
This show is fresh and very original, not another cookie cutter murder show and always the second suspect as the killer. Writers are terrific and the give the excellent cast some quality material, nice job how the story lines are interwoven. It's not just another cop drama, feels like real people with real life situations and problems to solve or resolve, including their own self conflicts. Every symbol, tool or character has a reason to be there. Characters are grounded and well thought out, compelling and we actually root for them, no mystery here, no hidden alcoholics or drug abuse by the show's cops (we've seen it so many times before). Even my 13 year old son has an interest in the show because of the good action and strong story arcs which actually make sense -- no sci-fi effects, these are people facing true crises and figuring it out. Refreshing, refreshing, refreshing! ABC you have a hit, let it mature some more, you'll win recognition for this -- reward your actors, writers and producers, with more episodes, they all deserve it! So does your growing audience.

Great Show
TennMom22 March 2011
This show is very good, but it does not the credit it deserves. I continue to watch it and to try to get other people to watch it also. I was so glad to see "Season Finale" during the promo for the last episode, and hope it means it will return next year. Michael Imperilo is fantastic as Detective Fitz and each episode he gets better. His real life son starred in the last episode. He looks just like his dad , which made it even more real. Please ask your friends to look for reruns or go into the network for episodes and watch them. I sent peanuts to CBS to keep Jericho on, but it still went off. That doesn't say much about my taste. I just liked the show.
