So I skimmed everything on the main page for UNIVERSAL SOLDIER REGENERATION, and no where is Chernobyl (in the Ukraine) spelled out, which is where 99% of this feature film takes place. I guess NO ONE at IMDb has access to Wikipedia! Fortunately, I DO have the availability of this cutting edge information resource, so you can bet your RPGs that the spelling above is the correct one. Since Jean-Claude Van Damme has a Bulgarian stunt double--Trayan Milenov--to do all the taxing physical work in this UNIVERSAL SOLDIER edition, he's obviously not the sort who would be up to filming at the REAL Chernobyl site. (Yes, tourist buses bring people there daily in the 21st Century, but the price for a location shoot might run a few thousand dollars more than for an abandoned Bulgarian steel mill.) The main reason I invested 18 minutes, 45 seconds of my time in this DVD feature BETWEEN THE LINES was that I was hoping editor David Goldman might have some interview footage with Elka Gecheva, the feature's credited cleaning lady. I have seen A LOT of features shot in Bulgaria recently, and they ALWAYS have at least one credited cleaning lady (sorry, men, this seems an exclusively female realm; apparently Bulgaria has no "janitors"). On the other hand, I've seen even more flicks shot in America, and not a one has a credited cleaning lady. Why the discrepancy? Is Bulgaria REALLY that much filthier than the USA? Or do Bulgarians just take the adage "cleanliness is next to godliness" more to heart? Just what is it the Bulgarian cleaning ladies clean? Hopefully, Mr. Goldman will have time in his next "making of" from Bulgaria to shed some light on this deep mystery.
