Somebody who wrote the script must have been out sick when they taught geography in elementary school :)
Never mind just the Sargasso Sea being mistakenly said to lie in the South Atlantic Ocean :) Throughout the whole series, the plot is said to take place "in the South Atlantic Ocean".
The South Alantic extends from northern Brazil down to Cape Horn on its western side, and roughly from Equatorial Guinea down to the Cape Of Good Hope on its eastern side.
The North Atlantic extends from West Africa up to the North Cape (Norway), and roughly from Columbia/Panama up to northern Canada.
Geologists also recognize the Central Atlantic Ocean. The North Atlantic opened first during the Jurassic. The South Atlantic opened second during the Cretaceous. The Central Atlantic opened last during the Cretaceous. This happened "at the last minute", geologically speaking, because it looked like the south Atlantic will keep opening northward, splitting the African continent roughly north-south. Instead, the African and South American plates split, connecting the two parts of the Atlantic.
So, for the purposes of the movie: everything north from Brazil, Suriname, Columbia, Panama all the way to Canada is the NORTH ATLANTIC. :) This includes Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Florida, the Sargasso Sea, etc etc.

Emily states early on that "the Atlantic is also the deepest ocean in the world, with amazingly strong currents." However, the Pacific is significantly deeper in terms of both average depth and maximum depth.
