The I-Pad One
jotix10016 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Phil's birthday is coming. Like anyone interested in the newest innovations, Phil wants to get a new I-Pad for his present. Claire, who was supposed to have been in line to buy one falls asleep on the sofa. The only trouble is, the device flew out of the Apple store shelves. There are none to be found, anywhere. Claire is in a bind because that is what Phil is hoping to get, so not granting him his wish, will prove to be a disappointment.

Jay, on the other hand, approaches things differently. He has already bought a chess set from the SkyMall catalog! He wants to interest Manny in playing the game with him, so he unwraps the gift and challenges the boy to play against him. The only thing is, Jay is a sore loser, so Gloria, who knows Manny can play, tells him to let Jay win, which he does. Not content with winning, Jay challenges Manny again. The step-son wants to play for a prize. He challenges the old man to give him his watch if he loses. Gloria is also an avid player who can beat Jay anytime. Little known to Jay, chess was a big game in Colombia!

At Mitch and Cam's house, they begin listening to Lily's monitor as strange noises and a couple talking in what seems to be a case of adultery, the man is clearly cheating on the wife. Mitch decides to return the tools he borrowed from his father. As he gets in, he asks Jay to teach him how to fight, something Jay gave up a long time ago when he realized Mitch was not up to having any confrontations. Just giving his son pointers does not do it for Jay.

Claire is frantic trying to find an I-Pad. She enlists the help of Haley, who finally is given a tip as to how to get the hold of one. Claire comes to an Apple store where a big line has formed outside. Waiting in line, she realizes she left her credit card at home. What to do? She calls Mitch in desperation. Her brother arrives to help her pay for the tablet. A man cuts into the line right in front of Mitch and Claire. Mitch grabs the man from behind, creating a panic among the people in the queue. Security guards come and throw the trio from the buyers' line. Claire is devastated.

Phil, who has gone to a nearby park is excited when he listens to an invitation to join Phil's birthday party celebration. He thinks the family has decided to surprise him, but it is another Phil's, a black boy's party, which he, in fact, crashes. Back home, the atmosphere is gloomy. As they try to explain to Phil about not being able to locate an I-Pad, Luke surprises everyone by pulling his a tablet for his father he has obtained by the power of his will.

Kevin Rodney Sullivan directed the episode. He got good performances from all the regulars. The screenplay was a collaboration among Joe Lawson, Vanessa McCarthy and Alex Herschlag. The half hour running time is over before we even realize it as everything went so nicely, time flew by without our noticing.

I love Modern Family, but this episode was one big cringefest. I hate product placement with a passion but this took it to another level. I write this review in 2021 and obviously this episode coincided with Apple's iPad launch. It was embarrassing.
