- Host George Murphy introduces the "Our Love Affair" musical number performed by Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney in Strike Up the Band (1940), where Jimmy, the Rooney character, is so preoccupied with becoming an orchestra conductor, that he cannot see that Mary, played by Garland, is in love with him as they sing the song together. Murphy then presents the short film Servant of Mankind (1940), which heralds the technological advances made by Americans by the late nineteenth century. The short film focuses primarily on the key of plentiful electricity and the work of Thomas A. Edison as providing the foundation for many of those and future technological advances to take place, including innovations that have made the movie business possible. In the hall of fame segment, Murphy presents the poignant farewell scene from the silent classic, The Big Parade (1925), where the soldier, portrayed by John Gilbert, heads off to war. And in the preview segment, Murphy presents a scene from the upcoming feature The Last Hunt (1956), a western tale set in the 1880s. He concludes with the lineup for next week's show.—Huggo
