It's a rave!

I'm still floating after a season 2 episode that I think is one of two of the best episodes of the series, the other being Coal Digger from season 1. Caught in the Act is sexually awkward, hilarious fun. The soul of the episode involves the three Dunphy kids surprising their parents with breakfast in bed- only to find them having sex. It's hard to say who's more traumatized, the kids or Claire.

Claire and Phil struggle to get a grip and a way to explain their sexuality to the kids. She thinks this will heal them, unaware Haley, Alex and Luke really think the talk will be the worst part. The kids eventually reason that having parents who have sex is better than having divorced parents, which is true, and then make Claire feel good about herself by acting like the talk actually helps. Think of something else, like at school, Haley and Luke tell themselves. Classic. They also get their parents a door lock- only to find it's so loud they are unhappily informed every time their parents have sex.

Other stories of the episode have Gloria accidentally sending Claire an insulting e-mail and Mitch and Cameron ruining an expensive rug belonging to an unforgiving woman. These stories provide more of the family being mortified, giving the whole episode a tense, uncomfortable feeling. In the end, Mitch and Cameron's story almost rivals the Dunphys' in outrageous misfortune when Mitch makes a sweeping gesture of apology and destroys an expensive vase. Now that's just adding injury to injury. To us, however, it adds laughter.

Parent's worst nightmare

The theme that runs through today's chapter of this wonderful sitcom is embarrassment. Each one of the three families have their share of a sticky situation which is hard to get out of.

Take the Dunphys. The kids have prepared a breakfast to celebrate their parents anniversary. They gather all the goodies they made and go upstairs, but lo and behold, Claire and Phil were having sex, as the children open the door! What to do. The three small Dunphys dropped the tray and everything in it and fled the scene. Now Claire and Phil will have to sit and figure a way out of the mess thus created.

The Pritchetts are going to Las Vegas without Manny. Gloria is dreading the fact that she must put up with Claire and her bossy ways to the bake sale they got involved for school. Gloria, who is complaining to Jay, does not realize he has typed an email with her sentiments about the upcoming event and watches in horror as the mailing goes through. What to do? On the way to the airport Glora makes Jay make a U-turn back to Phil and Claire's hoping they can undo what they did.

Mitchell and Cameron have had it with their small fast food joint. Not only is the boss rude to them, they cannot avoid it. When the new restaurant Amelia opens near them, the partners figure a way to gain entrance, something they cannot get otherwise and eat there. To their surprise, Amelia has a young toddler and they figure getting closer to the owner through their kids. Their effort is a failure because the woman is impossible. To make matters worse, they spill strawberry juice on an expensive white carpet.

Michael Spiller, one of the geniuses behind the success of the program directed the episode. It was written by one of the series' creators, Steve Levitan with Jeffrey Richman and Elaine Ko. It was a fun program as the three families deal in their own fashion with those embarrassing moments they must confront. Fine job by all the regulars and Rachel Harris who is seen as Amelia.
